Compaction water content is a key variable which controls fundamental properties of compacted clay (permeability, deformation and strength). There are three conditions in compaction water content (i.e. dry of optimum, optimum and wet of optimum). Actually, soil mass by compaction is unsaturated condition before seepage therefore, soil suction is the key which is able to explain properties of compacted clay. This paper used results from compacted Pittsburg sandy clay tested under UU test condition from Duncan and Seed in order to determine hyperbolic parameters and simulated behavior of Soyanggang dam as a example. As the results of analysis, dry of optimum presents higher strength and smaller displacement. Wet of optimum is sensitive to water content. Both dry and wet of optimum, any hydraulic fracturing potential does not appear. But dry of optimum is close to hydraulic fracturing.

Objectives : Intelligent thermo-acupuncture system (ITA-system) is invented for the convenient operation of thermo-acupuncture therapy. The aim of this study is to investigate the safety of 100 Mb electromagnetic field (EMF) made by ITA-system. Mpthods : We analysed the influence of this EMF on animals in order to experiment in the influence of EMF, male ICR mice were exposed to EMF at different distances from the ITA-system. And we examined weight, diet, behavior, organ and hematological changes. Results & Conclusions : According to the animal studies with mice about EMF influence, there was no significant difference between the control group and the exposed groups about them. In conclusion, the safety of 100 kHz EMF made from ITA-system through this animal research was checked.

Soil salinity is one of the most serious abiotic stresses limiting the productivity of agricultural crops. To cope with salt stress, plants respond with physiological, developmental and biochemical changes, including the synthesis of a number of proteins and the induction of gene expression. Salicornia herbacea is a halophytic plant that grows in salt marches and on muddy seashores. In order to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance in S. herbacea, we isolated several genes that involved in the salt tolerance by mRNA differential display.Here we report the cloning of a cDNA encoding fructose-1, 6-bisphosphate aldolase, named ShADL, which is 1293 bp long and contains an open reading frame consisted of 359 amino acids with calculated molecular mass of 39 kDa. ShADL protein showed 86% identity with Arabidopsis and 78% with aldolase of common ice plant. Northern blot analysis revealed that the transcript of ShADL gene was increased dramatically depending on the NaCI concentrations.

Purpose: Commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits have been considered less reliable for children than for adults. The aim of this study was to compare four ELISA kits and in-house immunoblotting based on the analysis of anti-H. pylori-IgG antibody reactivity. Methods: A total of 399 serum samples were collected at the GNU Hospital during 1998-1999. All sera were tested using ELISA and immunoblotting. Statistically significant differences were determined by the $x^2$ test. Results: The overall seropositivity rates using GAP IgG, Genedia IgG, HM-CAP, Pyloriset EIA-G, and immunoblotting were 13.0%, 25.1%, 18.3%, 15.8%, and 62.9%, respectively. Immunoblotting showed a higher seropositivity rate than did all four ELISA kits in all age groups. Genedia IgG had the highest seropositivity among the ELISA kits. The seropositivity rate for children aged 13 to 18 months was lowest, and that of children aged 15 years was highest (90.0%). The seropositivity rate for children aged 7 months to 5 years was significantly lower than that for children aged 6 to 15 years among the four ELISA kits (p<0.0001) and immunoblotting (p=0.02). Conclusion: Immunoblotting is the most sensitive test for detection of anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies among the serological tests in this study. These results emphasize the need for standardization when commercial ELISA tests are used in different nations or in young age groups. Immunoblotting could be a suitable noninvasive assay for serodiagnosis and seroepidemiologic study of H. pylori infection in Korean children.

Background/Aims: We tried to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the PCR for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection in children and to identify the possible false positive results by the PCR due to remaining H. pylori in the working channel of an endoscope or in the biopsy forceps. Methods: Forty seven urease test samples with three gastric biopsy specimens, 6 collections of 15 ml flushing distilled water after the end of working channel disinfection, 11 15 ml-distilled-water batches as the negative controls, and one H. pylori positive paraffin block as the positive control were collected at the Gyeongsang National University Hospital. The Hel-2 primer set (GTGTGCGGGCTTACAAGGAT, CGTTAGCGTTCATCACACTC) and a 34 cycle amplification were used Results: All of the seventeen specimens of urease tested positive within 6 hours and the ten specimens of urease also tested positive within 48 hours were PCR positive. Eighteen of the 20 specimens of urease tested negative and were also PCR positive. Three of the 6 specimens of 15 ml flushing distilled water were found to be PCR positive. All the negative controls were PCR negative and the one positive control was PCR positive. Conclusions: The clinical usefulness of PCR using gastric biopsy specimens in children was limited due to the possible dead or live H. pylori remaining in the biopsy channel.

Background/Aims: A previous history of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP) is a risk factor for PEP, suggesting that there may be a genetic predisposition to PEP. However, nothing is known about this yet. The aim of this study was to identify genetic variations associated with PEP. Methods: A cohort of high-risk PEP patients was queried from December 2016 to January 2019. For each PEP case, two propensity score-matched controls were selected. Whole exome sequencing was performed using blood samples. Genetic variants reported to be related to pancreatitis were identified. To discover genetic variants that predispose to PEP, a logistic regression analysis with clinical adjustment was performed. Gene-wise analyses were also conducted. Results: Totals of 25 PEP patients and 50 matched controls were enrolled. Among the genetic variants reported to be associated with pancreatitis, only CASR rs1042636 was identified, and it showed no significant difference between the case and control groups. A total of 54,269 non-synonymous variants from 14,313 genes was identified. Logistic regression analysis of these variants showed that the IRF2BP1 rs60158447 GC genotype was significantly associated with the occurrence of PEP (odds ratio 2.248, FDR q value = 0.005). Gene-wise analyses did not show any significant results. Conclusions: This study found that the IRF2BP1 gene variant was significantly associated with PEP. This genetic variant is a highly targeted PEP risk factor candidate and can be used for screening high-risk PEP groups before ERCP through future validation. (ClinicalTrials.gov no. NCT02928718)

This Paper Proposes a new efficient system design strategies for the acoustic-based underwater multiple modem and media access control protocol. The system aims to establish the acoustic-based communication network of an underwater vehicles for deep sea mining, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of acoustic and allows fast data transmission through the acoustic-based multiple channel. A media access control protocol for integrated communication network and it's acoustic-based communication modems that allows 'peer-to-peer' communication between a surface mining plant multiple underwater system is designed, and the proposed media access control protocol is implemented for its verification. Furthermore, a proposed design strategies which make it possible to control the multiple vehicle for an underwater mining is presented in this paper.

Background/Aims: Korean population has been suggested to be minimally exposed to hepatitis A virus (HAV) for recent 20 years. Therefore, hepatitis A epidemics may occur among medical students and medical personnels who care the asymptomatic patients with hepatitis A. We investigated the changes in anti-HAV IgG positive rate among the medical students for 10 years and the curren anti-HAV IgG positive rate among the medical personnels in Chinju. Methods: Serum anti-HAV IgG was measured using the commercially available HAVAB radioimmunoassay kit. The sera had been collected from 780 sophomore medical students during 1988-1997 and from 95 pediatric medical personnels at the Gyeongsang National University Hospital in December, 1997. Results: The anti-HAV IgG positive rate of the sophomore medical students was 87.5% in 1988, 86.7% in 1989 83.8% in 1990, 75% in 1991, 85% in 1992, 70% in 1993, 56.3% in 1994, 58.8% in 1995, 53.8% in 1996 and 38.8% in 1997. The anti-HAV IgG positive rate among the pediatric medical personnel (mean age ±S.D.; 26.4 ±3.1) was 65.3%. Conclusions: These suggest that the population susceptible to HAV exists among medical students and pediatric medical personnels. Therefore, we should se up the preventive modalities against hepatitis A virus infection among these high risk groups.
