<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Structural and electronic modification of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanomaterials induced by the co-introduction of fully disordered glass phase and oxygen vacancies can lead to remarkable advances in the electrode performance in emerging energy storage systems. We report on the effective co-creation of fully amorphous nanofibers (NFs) composed of black TiO2-x and conductive carbons throughout the NF structure, and evaluate the materials as potential anodes in sodium-ion batteries. The black TiO2-x nanofiber is successfully fabricated by electrospinning a precursor solution followed by a two-step sequential thermal treatment in an air and reducing atmosphere. The NF electrode could deliver approximately two-fold higher 2nd discharge capacity and an excellent kinetic performance even under high rates compared to that delivered by anatase-structured white TiO2 NFs used as reference, because of (i) an inherent free volume in the glass phase corresponding to the enlarged Na+ sites, (ii) increased electrical conductivity (low bandgap) resulting from the presence of Ti3+, (iii) introduction of conductive carbon agents around the TiO2-x domain, and (iv) one-dimensional NF feature allowing numerous Na+ reaction sites at the electrochemical interface. We also elucidate the morphological and structural changes in the nanofibers after discharge and charge by <I>ex-situ</I> characterizations.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We succeed in co-creating amorphous nanofiber structure composed of black TiO2-x and conductive carbons. </LI> <LI> Black TiO2-x/carbon nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning followed by a two-step thermal treatment. </LI> <LI> Black TiO2-x/carbon nanofiber delivers excellent electrochemical performance compared to those of anatase TiO2 nanofiber. </LI> <LI> The benefits and reaction mechanism of the black TiO2-x/carbon nanofiber anode in the Na-ion cell operation is elucidated. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Backgrounds/Aims: Accurate diagnosis of significant liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is crucial when determining whether to initiate antiviral treatment (AVT). We conduct a meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic performance of vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) for significant liver fibrosis in AVT-naïve CHB patients with serum alanine transaminase (ALT) levels within 5-fold the upper limit of normal (ULN). Methods: The Ovid-Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, and KoreaMed databases were searched to identify studies that compared the performance of VCTE and liver biopsy (reference standard) when diagnosing significant liver fibrosis (≥F2) in AVT-naïve CHB patients with ALT within 5-fold the ULN. A hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic curve (HSROC) and bivariate model were performed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of VCTE in the meta-analysis. Results: Eight studies (2,003 patients) were included. The summary sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of significant liver fibrosis were 0.78 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66–0.86) and 0.72 (95% CI, 0.60–0.82), respectively. The HSROC for the diagnosis of significant liver fibrosis was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.72–0.86). The optimal cutoff value of VCTE for diagnosis of significant liver fibrosis was 7.7 kPa with a sensitivity of 0.64 (95% CI, 0.50–0.76) and specificity of 0.83 (95% CI, 0.72–0.90). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that VCTE has an acceptable diagnostic performance for significant liver fibrosis in AVT-naïve CHB patients with ALT within 5-fold the ULN.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is a neurological disease characterized by destruction of myelin sheaths of brain cells in the pons, usually caused by rapid correction of chronic hyponatremia. Although previous reports on CPM described very poor outcome, recent some reported that relowering of serum sodium within 24hr after symptom onset showed a favor recovery from CPM. However, it is unusual spontaneous full recovery from CPM without relowing of Na. We report a case of 59-year-old woman diagnosed with CPM, and recovered spontaneously. A 59-year-old woman presented to our hospital with scalp laceration. On admission she was alcohol ordor state, but she was alert. She complained nausea and vomiting which had evolved 2 days. Her serum biochemistry showed sodium of 111.1 mEq/L. She was treated with 3% saline. And six hours later, when serum sodium was 119.9 mEq/L, 3% saline was stopped and we started 0.9% saline. At that night, she showed severe emotional lability and disorientation. She didn’t sleep all night. On 2nd admission day, serum sodium was 130.4 mEq/L. We consult to psychiatry about anxiety. She was diagnosed with delirium tremens and started on chlordiazepoxide. On 3rd admission day, serum sodium reached 137.8 mEq/L. On 5th admission day, patient became drowsy. Neurological examination revealed only general weakness. Focal neurologic deficits were not observed. So we suspected drug side effect due to chlordiazepoxide. We decided to reduce chlordiazepoxide. On 9th admission day, her drowsy mental state wasn’t improved. We stopped chlordiazepoxide. Brain MRI was performed, and MRI showed high signal intensity in the central pons and bilateral basal ganglia and thalamus on T2-weighted image and diffusion weighted imaging. She was diagnosed with CPM and EPM. We continued supportive care since then, but she couldn’t speak and couldn’t move her extremities herself for a long time. While continuing supportive care, her drowsy mental state gradually improved. On 22th admission day, she became alert and could handshake. On 26th admission day, she was discharged to convalescent hospital. Three weeks after discharge, when she came to out-patient clinic, she showed full recovered neurologic problem.

Although Korean influenza virus isolates have been genetically associated with the vaccine strains of the corresponding year, influenza B viruses have prevailed almost every year in Korea during the past decades. We have 'analyzed the genetic characteristics and evolutionary patterns of the haemagglutinin (HA) 1 domains of influenza B viruses isolated during 1988-1999 using direct RT-PCR and sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of influenza B viruses isolated in Korea indicated that antigenically and genetically distinguishable strains of the lineage II and lineage III variants had been cocirculated. Variants prevailed in early 1990s are represented in 1996/97 and 1998/99 and some different variants have been co circulated geographically and prevailed concurrently in Korea. All HA1s of Korean isolates have amino acid substitutions mainly in the region between position 124 and 310, which was previously proposed an immunodominant region. Insertion-deletion patterns of the HA gene revealed that Korean influenza B viruses were evolved from Lee40 with different manner between lineage II and III viruses. Lineage III viruses were also divided into two groups as conserved group and inserted group, in relation to Lee40. But lineage II viruses had evolved with directional pattern. Antigenic index proposed that influenza B isolates prevailed since 1996/97 seasons might had emerged from the antigenic variants of a Seo1697-like virus and that new variants might appear from the lineage II viruses resulting in persistent prevalence in Korea.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) on the surgical outcomes of ciliary sulcus (CS) Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) tube placement. Methods: A retrospective review of medical records of 54 consecutive patients who underwent AGV implantation with tube placed in CS was performed. Consecutive cases operated without the use of intraoperative MMC from 2017 to 2019 were compared with consecutive cases operated with MMC from 2019 to 2021. Surgical failure was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) exceeding 21 mmHg in two consecutive visits after postoperative 3 months or ≤30% IOP reduction, IOP ≤5 mmHg in two consecutive visits, or loss of light perception. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank test were performed to compare the surgical failure rates. Results: A total of 54 eyes of 54 patients were investigated. Mean follow-up period after AGV implantation was 1.4 ± 0.8 years. The MMC group showed significantly lower IOP during the 1st postoperative month (20.5 ± 8.6 mmHg vs. 15.8 ± 6.4 mmHg, p = 0.027), but the difference did not persist 6 months after the surgery (p = 0.805). The mean number of postoperative antiglaucoma medications was significantly lower in the MMC group in the 1st postoperative month (p = 0.047) but no difference was found at 6 months. No statistical difference was noted in the rates of postoperative complications. Kaplan- Meier survival analysis showed comparable survival rates between MMC group and no MMC group (p = 0.356). Conclusions: The intraoperative use of MMC significantly lowered IOP in the 1st postoperative month but did not increase 6 months success rates in patients receiving AGV tube placement in CS.

<P>Chemotherapies for colon cancer have recently advanced. However, there is still a need to develop agents and identify effective regimens for better treatments of colon cancer. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) have shown potential as anti-cancer agents. We investigated the anti-tumor effects of CG2 (an HDACI) in combination with irinotecan, 5-FU, or oxaliplatin. Combinations of CG2 with SN38 (the active form of irinotecan), 5FU, or oxaliplatin were more effective than the agents alone when used to inhibit the growth of HCT116 cells. The protein expressions of acetyl-H3, p21, caspase-3, -8, and -9, PARP, and XIAP were affected in a time- and dose-dependent manner in HCT116 cells treated with the CG2 alone or combined CG2 and SN-38. In HCT116 xenografts, the HDACI CG2 in combination with irinotecan dramatically inhibited tumor growth without showing additive toxicity. These data indicate that CG2 together with irinotecan is a promising combination novel treatment for colon cancer.</P>
