Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.
홈쇼핑 기업과 소비재 중소기업의 해외 동반진출에 관한 사례연구

우리나라의 지속적인 경제발전과 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해서는 대기업과 중소기업의 간의 균형 잡힌 발전이 필요하다. 이에 대중소기업간 상생 및 해외 동반진출에 대한 관심이 높으며, 정부에서도 여러 가지 지원정책을 늘리고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 국내 홈쇼핑 기업과 소비재 중소기업의 해외 동반진출에 관한 인터뷰를 통해 홈쇼핑의 특수성을 고려한 효율적인 유통대기업과 중소기업의 해외 동반진출 확대 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 해외 동반진출을 하고 있는 3개의 홈쇼핑 기업을 대상을 인터뷰를 실시하였으며, 결과는 다음과 같다. 홈쇼핑 기업은 소비재 중소기업의 해외 판로 개척에 도움이 되며, 자원과 역량이 부족한 중소기업에게 경영 및 마케팅 역량을 활용할 수 있게 해준다. 홈쇼핑 기업이 소비재 중소기업을 지원하기 위해 영상을 제작하거나 언어를 번역해주기도 하며, 무역 통관과 관련된 서류를 지원해주기도 한다. 또한 시장개척단을 구성하여 해외시장 정보 제공 등의 지원을 한다. 그렇지만 아직까지는 홈쇼핑 기업에게 해외 동반진출이 주는 실질적인 혜택이 미미하기 때문에 장기적으로 서로 win-win할 수 있는 전략이 필요하다. 이를 위해 해외 동반진출을 독려할 수 있도록 실질적인 혜택을 제공해야 하며, 궁극적으로 CSV 개념을 실천할 수 있도록 해야 한다. There must be a balanced development of both conglomerates and small and mid-sized companies in order to secure constant economic growth and competitive edge of South Korea. Accordingly, high expectations are being placed on win-win growth and joint overseas expansion of conglomerates and small and mid-sized companies. This study seeks efficient ways to promote joint overseas expansion of major retailers and small and mid-sized companies considering the distinctiveness of home shopping by conducting interviews about joint overseas expansion of home shopping companies and small and mid-sized consumer goods companies in South Korea. Home shopping companies contribute to opening up overseas markets for small and mid-sized consumer goods companies, and allows them to make use of business and marketing competencies that they lack. Home shopping companies also produce visual materials or provide language translations, and help draw up documents for customs clearance in trading. They also form market development teams and provide information about the overseas markets. However, since the actual benefits from joint overseas expansion are minor for home shopping companies, there is a need for a strategy for win-win growth of both parties in the long run. To this end, it is necessary to provide substantial benefits to encourage joint overseas expansion and ultimately implement the concept of creating shared value (CSV).

We estimate the economic benefit of weather modification (precipitation enhancement and fog dissipation) by assuming its operation for the considered regions. Based on the statistical data, the economic benefit of the virtually operational precipitation enhancement experiments for the Andong and Imha basins, where the natural precipitation is relatively lack in South Korea, is calculated 348 for the water resources, 22,458 for forest fire prevention, and 28,458 million won/year for the drought relief. The benefit of the fog dissipation operation for the Incheon International Airport is estimated 7,365 million won/year for the flight delay due to fog. The calculated ratio of benefit to cost for precipitation enhancement operation for the basins is 14.07, which is comparable to that conducted in other countries.
Carnosine Promotes Exhaustive Swimming Capacity in Mice

To investigate the effect of carnosine on exhaustive exercise, swimming tests were conducted weekly with loads corresponding to 5% of body weight attached to the tails of mice, and the swimming time to exhaustion was measured. Eighty male ICR mice were divided into four groups, to which carnosine was administered at doses of 0 (control), 10, 50, and 250 mg/kg/day, respectively, for a period of four weeks. At the end of swimming exercise challenges, serum biochemistry, oxidative stress enzyme activity, and antioxidant enzyme activity in tissues were determined. Treatment with 250 mg/kg carnosine resulted in a significant increase in swimming times to exhaustion, compared to the control group in the first (P<0.01) and third week (P<0.05). Significantly lower serum lactate levels were observed after the swimming exercise in the carnosine-treated groups (10 and 250 mg/kg), compared with the control (P<0.01). Malondialdehyde levels in the liver (10 and 50 mg/kg carnosine treated groups) and skeletal muscle (250 mg/kg carnosine treated group) were significantly lower, compared with the control (P<0.05). Significantly lower protein carbonyl levels in skeletal muscle were observed in the 50 and 250 mg/kg carnosine treated groups, compared with the control (P<0.01). Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in skeletal muscle did not differ significantly among the groups. These results indicate that carnosine may improve swimming exercise capacity by attenuating production of lactate and reducing oxidative stress in mice.

Aims: Transient elastography (TE; Fibroscan) is now almost indispensable tool to estimate liver fibrosis. Although many clinical factors are known as confounding factors of liver stiffness (LS), there is no knowledge of who will achieve an improvement of liver stiffness if they have a similar liver fibrosis stage. The aim of this study is to see whether baseline hepatic inflammation may affect accurate LS measurement and which factors are associated with improvement of LS in Fibroscan. Methods: This retrospective study included consecutive 678 patients who underwent baseline liver biopsy and sequential LS assessment from 2006 to 2016 at 6 tertiary hospitals in Korea. Liver fibrosis and inflammation were graded on the basis of standard guideline proposed by the Korean Study Group for the Pathology of Digestive Diseases. LS measurement was performed at baseline and 1, 3, 5 years. Improvement of LS was defined as decreased LS value compared with baseline. Logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated with improvement of LS in Fibroscan. Results: Mean age of the patients was 47.12±12.25 years and 48.5% were male. Six hundred 2 patients had viral hepatitis (419 HBV; 183 HCV), 76 non-viral hepatitis. Fibrosis stages 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 were identified in 13 (1.9%), 96 (14.2%), 132 (19.5%), 186 (27.4%) and 251 (37.0%) patients, inflammation grade 0, 1, 2 and 3 were in 28 (4.1%), 278 (14.0%), 279 (41.2%), and 93 (13.7%), respectively. Baseline inflammation grade was correlated with baseline LSM value, and showed linear correlation with ΔLSM. In addition, as the grade of inflammation increased, the higher percentage of patients showed improvement of LSM. A multivariate analysis showed that higher degree of hepatic inflammation was an independent good predictor for LS improvement (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.20-9.26; P=0.021) after adjustment for fibrosis stage, platelet count, total bilirubin and alanine aminotransferase level. The association of LSM and hepatic inflammation was more significant in viral hepatitis compared with non-viral etiology. Conclusions: Baseline hepatic inflammation has significant impact on LS value and improvement of LSM, and should be considered as one of the confounding factors of measuring liver stiffness using Fibroscan.
Cervical endometriosis, mimiking cervical polyp: a case report

Endometriosis is one of the most common benign gynecologic disorder and occurs in approximately 15% of woman at reproductive age. Endometriosis often appears as pelvic peritoneal endometriosis or endomrtrioma and causes chronic pelvic pain and infertility in woman. Cervical endometriosis, as one of the numerous ramification of endometriosis, has been reported rarely and it is usually an incidenal or retrospective finding on histopathology report. Endometriosis of the cervix occurs far less than endometriosis of other extrapelvic site, such as abdominal wall or vaginal wall. Most patients are asymptomatic ; however, some have complaints of irregular intermenstural, postcoital spotting, and bloody discharge as our case. The authors hereby describe a recently encountered case of large polypoid cervical endometriosis of the cervix.

Aims: In general, the immune-tolerant (IT) phase is defined as HBeAg-positive patients with high HBV DNA levels and low alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. However, there are no clinical markers to accurately predict the true IT phase other than biopsy, and the long-term prognosis of these patients is unclear. In this study, we aimed to find the clinical factors that may help predict the true IT phase on histologic examination and investigate the long-term prognosis of these patients. Methods: This retrospective study included consecutive 276 patients who underwent liver biopsy with HBeAg-positive and high HBV DNA levels, ALT level less than 80 IU/mL and no evidence of clinically cirrhosis at three tertiary hospitals in Korea from 1994 to 2017. It was defined as a true IT phase when there is less than mild inflammation (□grade1) and mild fibrosis (□F1) by histopathological examination and the incidence of viral breakthrough (VB), liver cirrhosis (LC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were investigated. Results: Mean age of the patients was 42.5 ± 12.4 years and median ALT was 42 IU/mL [interquartile range (IQR) 31-56]. All of the patients had high HBV DNA, median DNA level was 1.8 x 108 copies (IQR 1.6 x 107- 8.5 x 108). Of the 276 patients who were clinically suspected of IT phase, only 85 patients (35.8%) were in true IT phase. Other biochemical factors including ALT did not predict the true IT phase. Of note, liver stiffness was the only predictor of the true IT phase after adjusting age, FIB- 4 score and APRI (adjusted odds ratio 1.35, 95% confidence interval 1.10-1.65, P=0.005). During observation period (median 103 months, IQR 51-145), VB occurred in 204 patients (73.9%), progressed to liver cirrhosis in 43 (15.6%), HCC in 17 (6.2%). In groups with ALT levels more than 2 times the upper limit of normal (≥50 U/ for female, ≥70 UL/L for male which was from recent AASLD guideline), the incidence of VB was significantly higher (P=0.006) than lower ALT groups. However, the incidence of LC or HCC was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: For the prediction of the histologic IT phase, the liver stiffness value may be helpful in addition to the current standard of ALT. Also, it is necessary to lower the current pre-scription standards for antiviral agents, ALT 80.
