A complete characterisation of the β-decay of neutron-rich nuclei can be obtained from the measurement of β-delayed gamma rays and, whenever the process is energetically possible, β-delayed neutrons. The accurate determination of the β-intensity distribution and the β-delayed neutron emission probability is of great relevance in the fields of reactor technology and nuclear astrophysics. A programme for combined measurements using the total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy technique and both neutron counters and neutron time-of-flight spectrometers is presented.

Patients were methotrexate-naive and seropositive for rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-cyclic citrullinated protein (CCP) type 2 or both and had radiographic evidence of joint erosions. The co-primary endpoints were the proportion of patients achieving disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS28)-defined remission (C-reactive protein) and joint damage progression (Genant-modified Sharp total score; TS) at year 1. Safety was monitored throughout.

Results:

At baseline, patients had a mean DAS28 of 6.3, a mean TS of 7.1 and mean disease duration of 6.5 months; 96.5% and 89.0% of patients were RF or anti-CCP2 seropositive, respectively. At year 1, a significantly greater proportion of abatacept plus methotrexate-treated patients achieved remission (41.4% vs 23.3%; p<0.001) and there was significantly less radiographic progression (mean change in TS 0.63 vs 1.06; p = 0.040) versus methotrexate alone. Over 1 year, the frequency of adverse events (84.8% vs 83.4%), serious adverse events (7.8% vs 7.9%), serious infections (2.0% vs 2.0%), autoimmune disorders (2.3% vs 2.0%) and malignancies (0.4% vs 0%) was comparable for abatacept plus methotrexate versus methotrexate alone.

Conclusions:

In a methotrexate-naive population with early RA and poor prognostic factors, the combination of abatacept and methotrexate provided significantly better clinical and radiographic efficacy compared with methotrexate alone and had a comparable, favourable safety profile.

This work presents the Monte Carlo simulations performed with the MCNPX and GEANT4 codes for the design of a BEta deLayEd Neutron detector, BELEN-20. This detector will be used for the study of beta delayed neutron emission and consists of a block of polyethylene with dimensions 90 × 90 × 80 cm ^3 and 20 cylindrical ^3He gas counters. The results of these simulations have been validated experimentally with a ^(252)Cf source in the laboratory at UPC, Barcelona. Also the first experiment with this detector has been carried out in November 2009 in JYFL, Finland. In this experiment the neutron emission probability after beta decay of the fission products ^(88)Br, ^(94,95)Rb and ^(138)I has been measured; this data is still under analysis. Simulations with MCNPX and GEANT4 have been performed in order to obtain the efficiency of the BELEN-20 detector for each of the above nuclei using the neutron energy distribution corresponding to each nucleus.
Synthesis of highly carboxylated latex particles using a power feed process
R. Santilla´n,M. Corea,E. Nieves,C.P. Alejandre,C. Gomez-Yanez,J.M. del Rı´o,H. Dorantes-Rosales,M.E. Navarro-Clemente 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.4
Two series of highly carboxylated latex particles were synthesized via a power feed process. The concentration carboxylic groups were varied inside the particles and a gradient in the concentration from the interior to the surface was created. The power feed process, proposed by Bassett et al., was used for the synthesis of the functionalized materials and a mathematical model was proposed for this process and theoretical predictions for the concentration of carboxylic groups inside the particles were corroborated with experimental results. A methodology based on thermodynamic formalism is proposed to study the response of these materials to ion exchange.

In experiment 1, eighty crossbred steers (239±15 kg) were used in a 229-d experiment to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of enzymatically hydrolyzed yeast (EHY) cell wall in diets on growth performance feedlot cattle during periods of elevated ambient temperature. Treatments consisted of steam-flaked corn-based diets supplemented to provide 0, 1, 2, or 3 g EHY/hd/d. There were no effects on growth performance during the initial 139-d period. However, from d 139 to harvest, when 24-h temperature humidity index averaged 80, EHY increased dry matter intake (DMI) (linear effect, p<0.01) and average daily gain (ADG) (linear effect, p = 0.01). There were no treatment effects (p>0.10) on carcass characteristics. In experiment 2, four Holstein steers (292±5 kg) with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used in a 4×4 Latin Square design experiment to evaluate treatments effects on characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion in steers. There were no treatment effects (p>0.10) on ruminal pH, total volatile fatty acid, molar proportions of acetate, butyrate, or estimated methane production. Supplemental EHY decreased ruminal molar proportion of acetate (p = 0.08), increased molar proportion of propionate (p = 0.09), and decreased acetate:propionate molar ratio (p = 0.07) and estimated ruminal methane production (p = 0.09). It is concluded that supplemental EHY may enhance DMI and ADG of feedlot steers during periods of high ambient temperature. Supplemental EHY may also enhance ruminal fiber digestion and decrease ruminal acetate:propionate molar ratios in feedlot steers fed steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets.

The aim of this study was to ascertain the level of concordance among gastrointestinal pathologists for regression grading in rectal cancers treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation. Seventeen gastrointestinal pathologists participated using the Mandard, Dworak, and modified rectal cancer regression grading systems to grade 10 representative slides that were selected from 10 cases of rectal cancer treated with long-course neoadjuvant chemoradiation. The slides were scanned with a whole-slide scanner generating dynamic digitized images. The results showed very little concordance across the 3 grading systems, with κ values of 0.28, 0.35, and 0.38 for the Mandard, Dworak, and modified rectal cancer regression grading systems, respectively. In only 1 of 10 study cases was there unanimous grading concordance using the modified rectal cancer regression grading system. It was felt that these systems lacked precision and clarity for reproducible, accurate regression grading. The study concluded that there was a need for a simple, reproducible regression grading system with clear criteria, a cumulative or composite score taking into account all sections of the tumor bed that is sampled rather than the worst section (highest grade), and there should be a uniform method of sampling of these specimens.

D-003 is a mixture of long-chain fatty acids isolated and purified from sugar cane wax with cholesterol-low-ering and antiplatelet effects. In order to further characterize the developmental toxicity during the treatment period from lategestation up to weaning of the offspring, pregnant females received 0 (control), 500, and 1,000 mg/kg/day D-003 daily byoral gavage beginning at day 15 of pregnancy and through gestation until day 21 postpartum. Maternal clinical signs, bodyweight, and food intake were measured at regular intervals during gestation and lactation. Live pups were weighed, sexed, and examined for developmental signs. One female and male of each litter were randomly selected to evaluate the reproduc-tive potential. There were no spontaneous or dose-related maternal deaths during the course of this study. The general healthand behavioral condition of offspring was good in all groups. No significant differences among groups were found in com-parisons of litter size, survival through the weaning period, sex ratio, and male and female weights. This peri- and postnatalstudy conducted with D-003 in rats indicated that treatment of the dam during late gestation and lactation did not show ad-versely effects on reproductive performance or fetal development over two generations.
