        Combining Timber Production and Wood Processing for Increasing Forestry Income: A Case Study of 6th Industrialization in Korean Forestry

        This study was aimed to analyze the increased forestry incomes by combining timber production and wood processing, which is one of 6th industrialization types in Korean forestry. The selected household has been engaged in forestry for two generations and they produce timber and associated wood products in their own facility. The wood products include dimension lumber, interior wood material, cutting board, and cube chips, the household also utilize logging and sawmill residues as well as seed and seedlings as by-products. Incomes and expenses that have been incurred on individual processes of the sequential timber production and wood processing were surveyed, and we analyzed the economic outcomes of entire business. The results of this study indicate that the gross income of the household is 122.3 million Korean won and the net income is 93.6 million Korean won. The net income of the household is approximately 2.8 times higher than the average net income of whole households in the forestry of Korea in 2016, which is approximately 4.3 times higher than that of households that have been particularly engaged in timber production over the country. We found that the 6th industrialization by combining the two sequential processes creates approximately 3.2 times as much added value compared to the case relying on timber production only.

        다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용실태 및 어머니 인식

        본 연구는 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용실태 및 어머니의 인식을 조사하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이에 다문화 가정이 비교적 많이 분포되어 있는 충남 및 경기도에 위치한 다문화 가정 어머니 총 108명을 대상으로 설문지 조사를 실시하였다. 설문지는 이원석, 서영화(2012)의 ‘유아와 부모의 스마트 사용실태’와 강연주(2014)의 ‘유아의 스마트 사용실태와 어머니 인식 척도’를 본 연구에 맞게 수정 보완하여 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 21.0을 사용하여 χ² 검증을 실시하였다. 결과는 첫째, 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 첫 사용 시기는 13개월~24개월, 1회 사용시간은 20분 이하이며 매일 사용한다고 응답한 경우가 가장 많았다. 월평균 소득이 낮을수록 스마트 기기 사용시간이 높게 나타났고 사용법 및 사용결정은 어머니에게 의존하면서 함께 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 재미와 학습적 요소를 위하여 스마트 기기를 사용하며 규칙을 정하고 사용한다고 응답한 경우가 가장 많았다. 둘째, 다문화 가정 영유아의 스마트 기기 사용에 대한 어머니의 인식은 스마트 기기의 필요성 유무에 유의한 차이가 없었으나 사용할 때는 읽기, 쓰기, 셈하기 등 교육적 기능에 목적을 두고 사용한다고 하였다. This study aims to investigate the use of smart devices by children from multicultural families and their mothers awareness. The survey was conducted on a total of 108 mothers from multicultural families in South Chungcheong Province and Gyeonggi Province, where multicultural families are relatively distributed. The questionnaire was supplemented by modifying ‘Smart Use Status of Infants and Parents’ from Lee Won-seok and Seo Young-hwa (2012) and ‘Mother Recognition Scale of Child Smart Use’ from Kang Yeon-ju (2014) for this study. The collected data were χ² validated using SPSS 21.0. The results were first, when children from multicultural families first use a smart device for 13 months to 24 months, and once use time is 20 minutes or less, and they said they use it every day. The lower the average monthly income, the higher the time spent using smart devices, and the more usage and decisions of use were found to be shared by relying on mothers. In addition, most respondents said that they use it for fun and learning elements and set rules and use them. Second, although there was no significant difference in the need for smart devices for multicultural children, the purpose of using them was to learn reading, writing, and counting.

        Insulin resistance mediates high-fat diet-induced pulmonary fibrosis and airway hyperresponsiveness through the TGF-β1 pathway

        <▼1><P>Prior studies have reported the presence of lung fibrosis and enhanced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in mice with high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obesity. This study evaluated the role of TGF-β1 in HFD-induced AHR and lung fibrosis in a murine model. We generated HFD-induced obesity mice and performed glucose and insulin tolerance tests. HFD mice with or without ovalbumin sensitization and challenge were also treated with an anti-TGF-β1 neutralizing antibody. AHR to methacholine, inflammatory cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and histological features were evaluated. Insulin was intranasally administered to normal diet (ND) mice, and in vitro insulin stimulation of BEAS-2b cells was performed. HFD-induced obesity mice had increased insulin resistance, enhanced AHR, peribronchial and perivascular fibrosis, and increased numbers of macrophages in the BALF. However, they did not have meaningful eosinophilic or neutrophilic inflammation in the lungs compared with ND mice. The HFD enhanced TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium, but we found no differences in the expression of interleukin (IL)−4 or IL-5 in lung homogenates. Administration of the anti-TGF-β1 antibody attenuated HFD-induced AHR and lung fibrosis. It also attenuated goblet cell hyperplasia, but did not affect the AHR and inflammatory cell infiltration induced by OVA challenge. The intranasal administration of insulin enhanced TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium and lung fibrosis. Stimulating BEAS-2b cells with insulin also increased TGF-β1 production by 24 h. We concluded that HFD-induced obesity-associated insulin resistance enhances TGF-β1 expression in the bronchial epithelium, which may play an important role in the development of lung fibrosis and AHR in obesity.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Obesity: A trigger for asthma onset</B></P><P>Insulin resistance may be an important causative factor underlying the increased risk of asthma and other respiratory issues in obese individuals. Obesity doubles the likelihood of developing asthma, with symptoms that are more difficult to control than in non-obese patients. The connection between these conditions is poorly understood, but researchers led by Jung-Won Park, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, have identified a potential mechanism. They demonstrated that a signaling molecule called TGF-β1 contributes to airway sensitivity and tissue scarring in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. Subsequent experiments showed that treatment with insulin also gives rise to increased TGF-β1 production in the mouse lung. Since insulin resistance is a common feature of obesity, resulting in abnormally high levels of circulating insulin, this could also account for the increased risk of respiratory problems.</P></▼2>

        고랭지 농업 용수확보를 위한 소규모 빗물 이용시설 적용방안

        최근 기후변화로 지난 2009년과 2012년에 강원도 태백시에서는 가뭄으로 인하여 엄청난 피해를 경험한 적이 있다. 또한 가뭄과 장마의 예측은 점점 더 어려워져 가는 실정이다. 특히 태백시의 87일간의 가뭄과 제한급수에 따른 피해액은 일상생활 134억원, 산업부문 338억원, 공공부문 47억원, 정신적ㆍ사회적 피해 1, 430억원 등 총 1, 949억원에 달하는 것으로 분석되었다. 태백시에 또 다른 큰 문제점은 가뭄으로 인한 고랭지 농업 피해로 인한 손실이다. 고랭지 배추를 생산하는 태백시는 우리나라 유일의 고산지역의 도시로서, 고랭지 농업이 특히 발달한 지역이다. 특히 태백 고랭지 배추는 태백시 농산품의 95.9%, 총 경지면적의 86.6%를 차지하고 있으므로, 배추의 생산성이 태백시 농산품 생산성을 대변한다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 태백시의 공공기관과 고랭지 농업 지역을 직접 방문하여 소규모 빗물 이용 시설에 대한 현황조사 및 시설의 상태를 점검하고 가뭄발생시 고랭지 농업지역의 피해를 최소화 할 수 있도록 소규모 빗물 이용 시설의 적용 방안 및 효과를 분석하였다. Recently, drought and rainy season are getting more serious. It is getting hard to forecast about drought because drought frequency is getting shorter than before. In 2009(winter) and 2012(summer), Taebaek-si was suffered from enormous damage due to the drought. Particularly, in 2009, cost of damage due to drought and restriction on water supply for 87days were estimated daily life sector 134 billion won, industry sector 338 billion won, the public sector 47 billion won, mental and social damage 1, 430 billion won. The other big issue of Taebaek is decrease in products of Highland Agricultural caused by the drought. Highland chinese cabbage which is the most important agricultural product in Taebaek-si account for 95.9% of all agricultural production of Taebaek-si and account for 86.6% of all gross area. For this reason, chinese cabbage of Taebaek-si is tropical agricultural product and is in charge of supply cabbage definitely. It is considered that if small scale rainwater harvesting system would be installed in highland agriculture area, it could reduce damage of drought at low cost and damage of cabbage would be decrease by system. For this study, We have researched regarding current status of Small Scale Rainwater Harvesting System of Highland Agriculture area in Taebaek-si and have compared with the amount of damage and installation cost in case of drought for the beneficial effects of Small Scale Rainwater Harvesting System, flexible supply of water and damage minimization of agricultural products.

        알레르기 환자에서 한방 이외의 대체 요법의 사용 현황에 대한 다기관 조사

        Background/Aims: The use of unproven complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) to treat allergies is popular in Korea. We conducted a multicenter survey of the current use of CAM other than herbal medication in Korean allergy patients. Methods: This study enrolled 510 adults with allergic diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and chronic urticaria, from ten hospitals. They underwent a structured questionnaire interview and clinical assessment of the prevalence, motivation, costs, and subjective assessment of CAM. Results: Of the patients, 16.7% used at least one type of CAM to treat their allergic diseases. Common types of CAM were diet (48.6%), aroma therapy (23.8%), massage (14.3%), breathing exercises (7.6%), baths (5.7%), and mind control (5.7%). The therapeutic effects of CAM included improved in patients using mind control (50%), diet (50%), breathing exercises (75%), and baths (33.3%), but worse in patients using aroma therapy (28%), and massage (26.7%). About 36.4% of the patients used CAM more than four times per year, and the average cost per CAM user was 370,000 won/year. The main reason for trying CAM was `hope to improve my constitution`. Conclusions: CAM is used widely for treating allergic diseases in Korea. Detailed knowledge of CAM and patient education are important. Further studies of the clinical efficacy of CAM are needed.         Examining the Effects of Involvement Profiles and Specialization on Loyalty to a Respective Tennis Club

        Very little research has examined the effects of involvement profiles on sport consumers’ loyalty to a particular sport club. Up to now, no research has identified the direct effect of specialization on loyalty and the moderating effect of specialization on the link between satisfaction and loyalty. This study attempted to fill these gaps in the literature and to investigate the effects of individual dimensions of involvement profiles in creating tennis club members’ loyalty through their satisfaction. This study also intended to investigate the direct and indirect effects of club members’ levels of specialization on loyalty to a particular club. This study used a causal model approach and proposed a conceptual model after an extensive review of the literature. It is based on a sample of 186 amateur tennis players in Korea. The current study used confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model to analyze and confirm the conceptual model proposed in this research. Findings indicated that involvement profiles (attraction, self-expression, and centrality) are positively related to the respondents’ satisfaction, which in turn is positively related to loyalty. Furthermore, while specialization is negatively related to loyalty, it positively moderates the link between satisfaction and loyalty.

        Finding a restaurant service is one of the preferred services for many Smartphone users. However, mobile map service has a limit between traffic and information sharing. Therefore it is very important to supply their information for both service provider and terminal user. In this paper, we designed a Smartphone application for WaguWagu (alias for finding a restaurant) using interactive sketch map on routes and information to be applied effectively. A benefit of this paper is a useful case to the Smartphone application developers by using interactive sketch map.

        Alterations in both acetylcholinesterase activity and synaptic scaffolding protein localization in the nervous system of Drosophila presenilin mutants

        Presenilins are one of two types of critical genetic factors in familial Alzheimer's disease, and they regulate various cellular functions such as intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response, apoptosis, and synaptic transmission. We utilized Drosophila presenilin (psn) mutants as a model for studying the role of this gene in regulating acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) and synaptic plasticity. Several lines of biochemical evidence indicated that AChE activity in a functionally null psn mutant (psnB3)was significantly reduced. In addition, we also found that psnB3 mutant neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) had smaller synaptic boutons and altered localization of Discs large, a synaptic scaffolding protein at the synaptic terminals compared to wild-type controls. These phenotypic defects were completely rescued in transgenic lines expressing the long form of wild-type Psn under an endogenous psn promoter cassette (PEPC-PsnWT;psnB3 lines). Taken together, these results indicate that Psn is important for regulating AChE activity, the size of synaptic boutons, and the localization of DLG at synaptic terminals.
