<P>Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessively inherited metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). The accumulation of phenylalanine leads to severe mental and psychomotor retardation, and the fetus of an uncontrolled pregnant female patient presents with maternal PKU syndrome. We have reported previously on the cognitive outcome of biochemical and phenotypic reversal of PKU in a mouse model, <I>Pah</I>enu2, by the AAV serotype 2-mediated gene delivery of a human PAH transgene. However, the therapeutic efficacy had been limited to only male PKU mice. In this study, we generated a pseudotyped recombinant AAV2/8-hPAH vector and infused it into female PKU mice through the hepatic portal vein or tail vein. Two weeks after injection, complete fur color change to black was observed in female PKU, as in males. The PAH activity in the liver increased to 65-70% of the wild-type activity in female PKU mice and to 90% in male PKU mice. Plasma phenylalanine concentration in female PKU mice decreased to the normal value. In addition, the offsprings of the treated female PKU mice can rescue from the harmful effect of maternal hyperphenylalaninemia. These results indicate that recombinant AAV2/8-mediated gene therapy is a potential therapeutic strategy for PKU.</P>

<P>In this study, we introduce a simple multi-directional rubbing method to generate various periodic patterns of toric focal conic domains (TFCDs), a typical smectic (Sm) LC defect by using the commonly used Sm LC materials, 4′-<I>n</I>-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB). We have successfully obtained a variety of spatially arranged TFCD arrays such as parallelogrammic, hexagonal and square arrays by changing the rubbing angle (<I>Ω</I>) between two different rubbing directions. Our experimental results demonstrate that frustration and distortion of nematic LC molecules at the intersections act as effective seeds to help positioning of TFCDs. Furthermore, the existence of nematic–Smectic A (SmA) phase transition is quite important in controlling the arrangement of TFCDs as the alignment of the nematic director strongly influences the arrangement of TFCDs formed in the SmA phase.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>In this study, we introduce a simple multi-directional rubbing method to generate various periodic patterns of toric focal conic domains (TFCDs), a typical smectic (Sm) LC defect by using the commonly used Sm LC materials, 4′-<I>n</I>-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB). <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c3sm52008k'> </P>

<P>Ionization channel formation is observed in an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet. A radial electric field is applied between coaxial electrodes. Helium flows in the axial direction through an inner metal tube electrode. In this device configuration, time-resolved images show that a plasma bullet can propagate only when the inner electrode is an anode. This phenomenon is experimental evidence that the bullet head is a positive space charge region. Moreover, it supports the hypothesis that the mechanism of bullet propagation is similar to that of a positive streamer. A comet-tail-like feature appears during the bullet propagation. This interesting shape occurs probably because of the Penning ionization near the helium-air boundary.</P>

A captive mute swan (Cygnus olor) in the brooding period was found dead without any specific signs. On necropsy, the entire digestive tract was severely necrotized with loosely adherent pseudo membranes, and Clostridium perfringens (CP) colonies isolated from the intestinal contents were identified as CP type A by polymerase chain reaction. Microscopically, the intestine and the liver were necrotized and intralesional bacterial clusters were observed. In this case, there were no other mortalities, so the condition of a single bird, in particular, stress from incubation effort, could act as the predisposing factor for necrotic enteritis. In this study, we report a unique case of necrotic enteritis associated with incubation in a captive mute swan.

In this paper, a method of station keeping strategy using relative orbital motion and numerical optimization technique is presented for geostationary satellite. Relative position vector with respect to an ideal geostationary orbit is generated using high precision orbit propagation, and compressed in terms of polynomial and trigonometric function. Then, this relative orbit model is combined with optimization scheme to propose a very efficient and flexible method of station keeping planning. Proper selection of objective and constraint functions for optimization can yield a variety of station keeping methods improved over the classical ones. Nonlinear simulation results have been shown to support such concept.
