Background: The diabetic patients are at significantly increased risk of developing vascular disease. It's etiology may involve oxidative damage by free radiacals and protection againse such damage can be offered by antioxidants. We investigated that oxidative stress as assessed by measurement of total antioxidant status may play a role in development of diabetes mellitus. Method: We measured total antioxiant status using merchandised kit, glycated hemeglobin(HbA1c) in 46 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 50 healthy matched control subjects. Result: The total antioxidant status(TAS) was 2.10(±0.04) mmol/L in uncontrolled type 2 DM patients, 2.60(±0.03) in controlled type 2 DM patients and 2.70(±0.16) in healthy control subjects. TAS was significantly lower(P<0.05) in uncontrolled type 2 DM patients, but no significant association between in controlled type 2 DM patients and healthy control subjects. The TAS was 2.00(±0.17) mmol/L in complicated type 2 DM patients and 2.10(±0.29) uncomplicated type 2 DM patients. There was no significant associations between complicated type 2 DM patients and uncomplicated type 2 DM patients. Conclusion: Poor glycemic control is associated with reduced TAS in type 2 DM patients. TAS was thought indirect index that predict glycemic control of type 2 DM patients.

Recently, surmountable amounts of genes are being cloned and it has become neccessary to develope new techniques for discovering genes with known chromosomal location and their possible functions. We have developed one such a method and applied it to search for genes that may play a functional role during the development of the central nervous system. To observe the distribution of 18 weeks old fetal brain cDNAs on the chromosome, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed with biotin labeled 18 weeks old fetal brain cDNAs. Among the chromosome bands showing strong hybridization with the cDNAs, 7q11 and 7q22 were microdissected and amplified by PCR. Each band-specific probe pool was confirmed by FISH and band specific cDNAs were selected by magnetic bead capture method. Selected cDNAs were subcloned to plasmid vectors and the nucleic acid sequences were analysed. As a result 41 different clones from 7q11 and 43 different clones from 7q22 were obtained. They were categorized as 25 clones of well characterized genes, 22 clones showing low homology with known genes, 13 clones of simply registered uncharacterized human cDNAs, and 24 clones of unknown genes. From these results, it may be suggested that our technique is very useful to clone the genes expressed in the developing human brain with confirmed chromosomal location. In addition, this cloning technique can be used to discover the new genes related with neural development in combination with functional screening methods.

Although ureteroscopy(URS) has been used widely to remove ureteral calculi, there is an argument against the belief that anesthesia or admission is needed for URS. We evaluated the experience of URS without anesthesia in female patients. From September 1997 to July 1998, URS was performed in 31 female patients without anesthesia. EHL(Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy) was used in 21 patients with impacted or large stone over 5mm. All patients were given oral antibiotics for 3 days and follow-up KUB was taken to confirm successful removal of the stone one week after the procedure. Successful treatment was defined as complete removal of the stone or residual fragments less than 2mm. Overall success rate was 96.7%(30 cases among 31 cases). All but one patient tolerated with analgesia through the entire procedures. There were only minimal complications such as mild flank pain and hematuria. So, we recommend that non-anesthetic ureteroscopic removal of stone as the first choice for treatment of lower ureteral stones in female based on the minimal morbidity, high success rate and low cost.

We examined the effect of soil salinity on the degradation of chlorpyrifos and the residual effect of chlorpyrifos and its metabolites on soil P fractionation during 60-day aerobic incubation. A sandy loam soil (Typic Psammaquents) was collected from the Daeho reclaimed tideland and two-thirds of the soil was applied with Na salt to get three different soil salinity levels: 4.6 (low, EL), 9.7 (medium, EM), and 14.4 (high, EH) dS m–1. Estimated half-lives for chlorpyrifos degradation were 7.1 in EL, 10.0 in EM and 16.9 days in EH soils. During the degradation of chlorpyrifos in soil, microbial activity decreased by increasing soil salinity and its inhibitory effect increased with time. In contrast, the addition of chlorpyrifos did not inhibit soil alkaline phosphatase (SAP) activity, which was higher in EH than in control soils. Chlorpyrifos added at a rate of 5.0 mg a.i. kg–1 dry soil did not affect the distribution pattern of P fractions in control soils. Both an increase in soil salinity and soil sterilization increased the Ca-bound P fraction and decreased the occluded Fe + Al-bound P fraction with a significant interaction between soil salinity and sterilization. With time, the Ca-bound P fraction increased and organic- and occluded Fe + Al-bound P fractions decreased, while total-P, available-P, and non-occluded + adsorbed P fraction remained unchanged. Particularly, organic-P was mineralized more in EH than in control soils and the Ca-bound P fraction contained the highest inorganic P released. Mineralization of organic P and partitioning of released P in the recalcitrant Ca-bound P fraction increased by increasing soil salinity, while available P fraction remained unchanged, suggesting that the addition of chlorpyrifos at the currently recommended dosage level did not seem to considerably affect the available P fraction with low P leaching potential to waterways.

We determined the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences of the complete envelope (E) protein gene of the five tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) strains KrM 93, KrM 213, KrM 215, KrM 216, and KrM 219, isolated from wild rodents in South Korea. We analyzed genetic variability within the isolates and compared them with 13 other TBEV strains. The complete E protein genes were amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), cloned into pGEM-T vectors, and sequenced. The five isolates were similar to the Western subtype in nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences (97%-99% identity) and by phylogenetic analysis. The deduced amino acid alignments had 13 unique amino acids, as in the Western subtypes. Among the signature amino acids, those at positions 206 and 317 were unique to each subtype. We were also able to identify amino acid substitutions in each of the three domains when comparing the 5 Korean isolates with the 13 other TBEV strains. Thus, we confirmed that the 5 Korean isolates belong to the Western subtype. These data will provide useful information for the development of an effective recombinant vaccine.

Graphene offers great promise to complement the inherent limitations of silicon electronics. To date, considerable research efforts have been devoted to complementary p- and n-type doping of graphene as a fundamental requirement for graphene-based electronics. Unfortunately, previous efforts suffer from undesired defect formation, poor controllability of doping level, and subtle environmental sensitivity. Here we present that graphene can be complementary p- and n-doped by simple polymer coating with different dipolar characteristics. Significantly, spontaneous vertical ordering of dipolar pyridine side groups of poly(4-vinylpyridine) at graphene surface can stabilize n-type doping at room-temperature ambient condition. The dipole field also enhances and balances the charge mobility by screening the impurity charge effect from the bottom substrate. We successfully demonstrate ambient stable inverters by integrating p- and n-type graphene transistors, which demonstrated clear voltage inversion with a gain of 0.17 at a 3.3 V input voltage. This straightforward polymer doping offers diverse opportunities for graphene-based electronics, including logic circuits, particularly in mechanically flexible form.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
