Tupac Amaru Shakur : A Communicator from the Margins

DURHAM, Eric 이화여자대학교 이화인문과학원 2014 탈경계인문학 Vol.7 No.1

This essay is a rhetorical analysis of the lyrics of, arguably, one of the greatest minds in music – Tupac Shakur. In general terms, this piece evaluates the ways in which oppressed communities manifest resistance toward the established power; issues of race, class, and power are taken into consideration. Through an examination of the lyrical component of Tupac Shakur’s Me Against the World, there is an attempt to uncover critical knowledge regarding the ways in which communication and culture are managed among the young American underclass. The essential elements are as follows: (1) the value of empathetic understanding; (2) the value of communalism; and (3) the attribute of oppression/paranoia. These rhetorical tenets are essential in the preparation and design of messages being constructed for members of the underclass and members of outside the community. Tupac is used a symbol for the disenfranchised urban voice. Through greater understanding of both the contemporary challenges urban youth face and the philosophical principles that guide their rhetoric, the academic conversation regarding communication and culture among marginalized communities is further advanced.

      • Recent Quarkonium Studies from the PHENIX Experiment

        Elsevier 2019 Nuclear physics. A Vol.982 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Quarkonium suppression in nucleus-nucleus collisions is a powerful tool to probe the density and temperature of the medium created in heavy ion collisions. Forward rapidity measurements in <I>p</I>(<I>d</I>)+Au collisions are essential to understand how quarkonium states are affected by initial state effects, formation time, and local particle multiplicity. Earlier measurements in Au+Au collisions showed a stronger suppression of forward J / ψ compared to mid-rapidity results, indicating the possibility of a smaller contribution of regenerated quarkonium states at forward rapidity. These proceedings report on the latest quarkonium studies performed by the PHENIX collaboration in the rapidity range 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 .</P>

Neuroprotective Effect of Enriched Chicken Bone Broth as a Dietary Supplement in a Model of Migraine Mediated by Early Life Stress

        Orion J. Peterson,Lauren E. Cornelison,Paul L. Durham 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.12

Early life stress is a risk factor for development of migraine, a prevalent painful neurological disease characterized by sensitization and activation of trigeminal neurons. Secondary early life stress was previously shown to cause increased expression of neuronal proteins implicated in peripheral and central sensitization. Recently, dietary supplementation of chicken bone broth was shown to attenuate trigeminal nociception in an orofacial pain model. Accordingly, the focus of this study was to determine the effects of early life stress and dietary inclusion of bone broth on trigeminal nociceptor sensitization and activation in a model of episodic migraine. Adult Sprague-Dawley male sender rats subjected to primary traumatic stress were placed next to breeding or pregnant female rats that served as receiver rats (secondary traumatic stress) and in proximity to the offspring until weaning. Unstressed and stressed young adult offspring were tested for mechanical nocifensive response after exposure to a pungent odor known to be a migraine trigger, and in response to daily supplementation of bone broth. Early life stress promoted a primed state of trigeminal nociceptors that were activated by the pungent odor in both genders. Female animals exhibited a higher basal sensitization level and prolonged nociception compared with males. Supplementation of bone broth beginning at the time of weaning inhibited basal and triggered trigeminal mechanical sensitivity. Early life stress caused development of a sensitized trigeminal system that is implicated in migraine pathology and dietary supplementation with bone broth suppressed trigeminal sensitization, and thus may provide neuroprotective activity for reducing migraine risk.

      • Retrospective Appraisal of Cancer Patients from Vientiane Capital City, Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), Seeking Treatment in Thailand

        Chaleunvong, Kongmany,Kamsa-ard, Supot,Suwanrungruang, Krittika,Wiangnon, Surapon,Sychareun, Vanphanom,Alounlangsy, Phetsamone,Durham, Jo,Promthet, Supannee Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.9

Background: Recent estimates suggest that in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) the burden of cancer in terms of DALYs lost is amongst the highest in South East Asia. As such, increasingly cancer is becoming an important public health concern in the country. Lao PDR however has no population-based cancer registry and only one hospital-based registry. Cancer treatment within the country is extremely limited. Patients who can, may travel to neighboring countries for treatment, but little information about this is available in the country. The aim of this study was to estimate some of the otherwise largely unknown parameters of the cancer burden in Lao PDR. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study based on the records of 847 Lao cancer cases treated with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, in Thailand between 1988 and 2010. Results: The annual rate of registration of Lao cancer cases fluctuated, but showed an increasing trend. Most cancers were diagnosed by histology (65.2%), and a combination of endoscopy and radiology (15.6%). In most cases (70.2%) the stage of cancer at diagnosis could not be determined. In those whose stage could be identified, 54.0% were at the final stage (Stage IV). Among males, the commonest cancer sites were the liver (16.1%), blood (12.3%) and nasopharynx (10.6%). Those in female patients were the cervix (22.2%), breast (14.6%) and blood (8.1%). Conclusions: This study indicates that despite some fluctuations, the number of Lao cancer patients presenting at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen, gradually increased between 1988 and 2010. The unfavorable pattern of late-stage cancer diagnosis among male and female patients suggests a need for cancer control interventions and the establishment of cancer registration and treatment facilities within Lao PDR.
