Abstract

Wounds that heal with excessive scar formation result in poor functional and aesthetic outcomes. To address this, in our study, visible light cured glycol chitosan (GCH) hydrogels containing endothelial growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) were prepared (GCH-EGF, GCH-FGF and GCH-EGF/FGF) and evaluated their efficacies on the improvement of wound healing in vivo. In vitro release test showed that the growth factors were released in a sustained manner along with initial burst for 24h. In vitro cell proliferation assay of L-929 mouse fibroblast cell line resulted in the superior ability of GCH-EGF/FGF on the rate. In vivo results demonstrated that the growth factor loaded GCHs further enhanced wound healing compared with GCH. In particular, GCH-EGF/EFG showed the most remarkable wound healing effect among the samples.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus is one of the autoimmune disease which glucocorticoids are mainstay of treatment. Cushing’s syndrome caused by glucocorticoid excess which could be exogenous or endogenous. Although iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome is most common form especially in the patient with glucocorticoid treatment, endogenous glucocorticoid excess should be under consideration because of different treatment strategy. Case Report: We describe a 51-year old woman had had a longstanding history of SLE. She was treated with steroid and cytoxan pulse therapy and plasmapheresis. Her lupus activity had remained stable for 7 years with low-dose glucocorticoid treatment. She showed excessive weight gain, easy bruising, moon face, truncal obesity, acne, and menstrual disorder. With history of a steroid therapy, iatrogenic Cushing’s syndrome was considered by priority. However endogenous Cushing’s syndrome was suspected in respect that the feature of Cushing’s syndrome had been aggravated with the long term use of minimal dose glucocorticoid. After evaluation under the impression of Cushing’s syndrome we diagnosed her as concomitant endogenous Cushing’s syndrome due to a left adrenal adenoma.(table1)The patient underwent laparoscopic left adrenalectomy. SLE was controlled with transient apply of low-dose glucocorticoid treatment and her lupus activity remains stable without glucocorticoid treatment until now. Discussions: This is the first reported case of concomitant endogenous Cushing’s syndrome onset with preexisting SLE in Korea. This case shows the importance of differential diagnosis of exogenous Cushing’s syndrome and endogenous Cushing’s syndrome in autoimmune disease patients with glucocorticoid therapy.
Ferroelectric Polarization Rotation in Order-Disorder-Type LiNbO3 Thin Films

The direction of ferroelectric polarization is prescribed by the symmetry of the crystal structure. Therefore, rotation of the polarization direction is largely limited, despite the opportunity it offers in understanding important dielectric phenomena such as piezoelectric response near the morphotropic phase boundaries and practical applications such as ferroelectric memory. In this study, we report the observation of continuous rotation of ferroelectric polarization in order-disorder-type LiNbO3 thin films. The spontaneous polarization could be tilted from an out-of-plane to an in-plane direction in the thin film by controlling the Li vacancy concentration within the hexagonal lattice framework. Partial inclusion of monoclinic-like phase is attributed to the breaking of macroscopic inversion symmetry along different directions and the emergence of ferroelectric polarization along the in-plane direction.
[FIG OMISSION]

The impact of 1 pound of nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) on warming the atmosphere is almost 310 times that of 1 pound of carbon dioxide. Agricultural soil management is the largest source of $N_2O$ emissions, accounting for about 73% of total $N_2O$ emissions. This study was conducted to evaluate the nitrous oxide emission in the cultivation of soybean during the first year of No-tillage (NT) and Conventional-tillage (CT) practices, under the various conditions such as different kinds of fertilizers, soil temperature, and moisture level. In the experiment, we set CT and NT treatments into 4 different groups - control treatments (no fertilization), green manure treatments, chemical fertilizer treatments and organic manure treatments. In the case of chemical fertilizer treatments, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 7.78 to 22.59% lower than CT treatment. In organic manure treatment, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 6.62% higher than CT treatment in August. But In July and September, $N_2O$ emission of NT treatment was 9.50% 28.38% lower than CT treatment, respectively. Soil temperature was correlated with $N_2O$ emission positively. In the future, continued long-term research on influence of various environmental factors on the generation of $N_2O$ and the economic value of no-till farming is required.

The present study investigated the neuroprotective effect of Carpinus tschonoskii MAX and its intracellular protective mechanism on 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced oxidative damage in PC12 cells. We found that pretreatment of PC12 cells with C. tschonoskii extract significantly inhibited the cell death induced by 6-OHDA in a dose dependent manner. C. tschonoskii extract decreased 6-OHDA-induced apoptotic events such as chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation, the decrease of Bcl-2/Bax ratio, caspase-3 activation and PARP cleavage. C. tschonoskii extract also reduced generation of 6-OHDA-induced reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide. Furthermore, C. tschonoskii extract up-regulated the myocyte enhancer factor 2 D (MEF2D), a critical transcription factor for neuronal survival, and Akt activity, whereas it inhibited the activity of ERK1/2 and JNK. The results suggest that C. tschonoskii extract decreases 6-OHDA-induced oxidative stress and could prevent PC12 cell apoptosis induced by 6-OHDA via the up-regulation of MEF2D and Akt activity, and thus may have application in developing therapeutic agents for Parkinson`s disease.
