The Experience of Miners Relocated to Alternative Positions due to Silicosis in the Andean of CODELCO, Chile, 2010

Delgado, Diemen,Aguilera, Maria De Los Angeles,Delgado, Fabian,Rug, Ani Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2012 Safety and health at work Vol.3 No.2

Objectives: To understand the personal experiences of mine workers that have experienced job relocation due to silicosis at the Andina Division of Corporaci$\acute{o}$n Nacional del Cobre (CODELCO), Chile. The purpose of the study was to provide useful information for the development of new local, business and public policies for the care of workers with silicosis. Methods: A qualitative study based on a practical case study of 5 workers. The information was collected by means of structured individual interviews. The method of analysis was phenomenology. Results: The corporal axis was the most commented upon. It included awareness of the illness, body pains, fatigue, and antagonistic mood disorders (sadness, or the difficulty in finding meaning in life). As far as personal relationships, there was evidence of strong relationships with family, coworkers and friends, as well as extended family. Over all, the experience of relocation was positive with periods of impatience and uncertainty. The job reassignment provided a new and pleasant context for the relocated workers and in the process improved their perception of their quality of life. Conclusions: A multidisciplinary team should attend mine workers relocated because of silicosis by addressing the mental and physical aspects of their disease, along with the integral participation of close family members. It is suggested that this investigation be maintain over time to record the personal experiences in the medium-term, adding new cases with the intention of shedding more light on the phenomenon being studied. As a preventive measure, continual workshops are needed on the proper use of respiratory protection in addition, a group of monitors is required.

      • Practical high curvature path planning algorithm in joint space

Delgado, Raimarius,Byoung Wook Choi IET 2015 Electronics letters Vol.51 No.6

A practical high curvature path planning algorithm that considers the velocity limit of a mobile robot in joint space is proposed. The existence of obstacles that constrict the smooth movement of mobile robots is inevitable. To avoid incoming collision, the robot is redirected to a new path with respect to the dimensions of the obstacle and a safety factor. The redirected path consists of geometric constraints such as high curvatures on its turning points which cause difficulty in controlling the mobile robot. Thus, a central velocity generation method that considers both velocity limits through a convolution operator and high curvatures at turning points is suggested. The central velocity is able to be within the configured velocity limit, otherwise actual velocity commands in joint space could result. Therefore, interpolation to obtain uniform sampling and velocity downscaling is performed to generate a feasible joint space trajectory. The result shows short travelling time compared with previous methods while satisfying velocity limits in the joint space.

Review of Cortical Bone Trajectory: Evidence of a New Technique

        Juan Delgado-Fernandez,Maria Ángeles García-Pallero,Guillermo Blasco,Paloma Pulido-Rivas,Rafael,G. Sola 대한척추외과학회 2017 Asian Spine Journal Vol.11 No.5

This article summarizes recent evidence on the cortical bone trajectory (CBT) obtained from published anatomical, biomechanical, and clinical studies. CBT was proposed by Santoni in 2009 as a new trajectory that can improve the fixation of pedicle screws in response to screw loosening in osteoporotic patients. Recently, research interest has been growing with increasing numbers of published series and frequent reports of new applications. We performed an online database search using the terms “cortical bone trajectory,” “pedicle screw,” “CBT spine,” “CBT fixation,” “MISS CBT,” and “traditional trajectory.” The search included the PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases, resulting in an analysis of 42 articles in total. These covered three aspects of CBT research: anatomical studies, biomechanical parameters, and clinical cases or series. Compared to the traditional trajectory, CBT improves pullout strength, provides greater stiffness in cephalocaudal and mediolateral loading, and shows superior resistance to flexion/extension; however, it is inferior in lateral bending and axial rotation. CBT seems to provide better immediate implant stability. In clinical studies, CBT has shown better perioperative results for blood loss, length of stay in hospital, and surgery time; similar or better clinical postoperative scores; and similar comorbidity, without any major fixation system complications due to instrumentation failure or screw misplacement. In addition, advantages such as less lateral exposure allow it to be used as a minimally invasive technique. However, most of the clinical studies were retrospective case series or case-control studies; prospective evidence on this technique is scarce, making a definitive comparison with the traditional trajectory difficult. Nevertheless, we can conclude that CBT is a safe technique that offers good clinical results with similar biomechanical and perioperative parameters to those of the traditional trajectory. In addition, new applications can improve its results and make it useful for additional pathologies.

Systemic Inflammatory Load in Young and Old Ringdoves Is Modulated by Consumption of a Jerte Valley Cherry-Based Product

        Jonathan Delgado,María del Pilar Terrón,María Garrido,Carmen Barriga,Sergio Damián Paredes,Javier Espino,Beatriz Rodríguez 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.8

A chronic subclinical inflammatory status that coexists with immune dysfunction is commonly found in the elderly population. Consumption of foods rich in antioxidants (e.g., cherries) is an attractive strategy to reduce risk from chronic diseases. Based on previous studies showing the antioxidant effect of a Jerte Valley cherry derivative product in humans, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the intake of a Jerte Valley cherry-based beverage on inflammatory load in both young and old ringdoves (Streptopelia risoria). To this purpose, circulating levels of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines as well as serum levels of different acute-phase proteins were measured before and after a 10-day treatment with the Jerte Valley cherry-based beverage. Thus, the 10-day treatment with the cherry-based beverage modulated the balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in both young and old ringdoves by down-regulating the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1b, tumor necrosis factor-a, and interferon-c) and up-regulating the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-2, and IL-10). Moreover, the 10-day treatment with the Jerte Valley cherrybased product reduced the levels of several proteins involved in acute-phase responses, such as C-reactive protein, haptoglobin,a2-macroglobulin, and serum amyloid P component. On the other hand, old birds showed imbalanced levels of inflammatory markers toward a pro-inflammatory status, thereby underlining the fact that aging is usually accompanied by systemic inflammation and inflammation-related chronic diseases. To sum up, the data suggest a potential health benefit by consuming the cherry-based beverage, especially in aged populations, through their anti-inflammatory properties.

Increasing occurrence of natural disasters lead to changes in our lifestyle in various ways. This paper presents a simultaneous audio broadcasting system based on an embedded platform that can be used in disaster warning applications. The system consist of a server that streams audio signals to different clients connected within a network. The actual media delivery is implemented using real-time protocol (RTP) stream concept encapsulated into real-time streaming protocol (RTSP) to control media transmission and ensure transmission of data between each component. We develop embedded platforms, with attached hardware audio codec, as streaming server and clients. Device driver using Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) is developed to operate the hardware codecs and convert analog audio signals to digital signals and vice versa. Open source libraries are implemented in the server and clients to support data exchange using RTSP and RTP. Transmission loss and delay were solved in the embedded environment using μ-law. Experiments are performed in unicast and multicast streaming to validate the practicality of the developed system.

Reconstruction methodology of a Francis runner blade using numerical tools

        Giovanni Delgado,Sergio Galván,Francisco Dominguez-Mota,J. C. García,Esteban Valencia 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.3

In a hydraulic turbine, the search of a better energy exchange with the fluid has led to designs of runner blade of geometrical shapes so complex that they are considered as free-form surfaces. Since such blade characteristics are unable to be expressed by analytic functions, its complete and realistic geometrical reconstruction requires an excessive quantity of design parameters. This study proposes a coherent and robust full 3D blade numerical reconstruction methodology in which the geometrical definition of the blade is independent of its design parameters. A quantitative and qualitative fit evaluation shows that the blade surface reconstruction needs an important quantity of discrete data along the spanwise and streamwise direction to achieve a continuous and smooth definition. The results infer that the shape characteristics of damaged and worn blades without an original CAD model could be recovered, making this methodology attractive for industrial and optimization applications.

A Probabilistic Analysis for Periodicity of Real-time Tasks

Raimarius Delgado,Byoung Wook Choi 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2021 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.13 No.1

This paper proposes a probabilistic method in analyzing timing measurements to determine the periodicity of real-time tasks. The proposed method fills a gap in existing techniques, which either concentrate on the estimation of worst-case execution times, or do not consider the stochastic behavior of the real-time scheduler. Our method is based on the Z-test statistical analysis which calculates the probability of the measured period to fall within a user-defined standard deviation limit. The distribution of the measured period should satisfy two conditions: its center (statistical mean) should be equal to the scheduled period of the real-time task, and that it should be symmetrical with most of the samples focused on the center. To ensure that these requirements are met, a data adjustment process, which omits any outliers in the expense of accuracy, is presented. Then, the Z-score of the distribution according to the user-defined deviation limit provides a probability which determines the periodicity of the real-time task. Experiments are conducted to analyze the timing measurements of real-time tasks based on real-time Linux extensions of Xenomai and RT-Preempt. The results indicate that the proposed method is able to provide easier interpretation of the periodicity of real-time tasks which are valuable especially in comparing the performance of various real-time systems.
