In this study, we attempted to characterize the Synechococcus sp. pee 7942 mutant resultant from a disruption in the gene encoding UDP-glucose: tetrahydrobiopterin a-glucosyltransferase (BGluT). 2DPAGE followed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry revealed that phycocyanin rod linker protein 33K was one of the proteins expressed at lower level in the BGluT mutant. BGluT mutant cells were also determined to be more sensitive to high light stress. This is because photosynthetic O$_2$ exchange rates were significantly decreased, due to the reduced number of functional PSIs relative to the wild type cells. These results suggested that, in Synechococcus sp. pee 7942, BH4-glucoside might be involved in photosynthetic photoprotection.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme catalyzing the first step for scavenging the reactive oxygen species is important as an early warning indicator to address various biological stresses. For this reason, the monitoring the expressed pattern of SOD gene in fish organs is one of important biomarkers to assess the aquatic pollution caused by many toxic chemicals. Based on the Northern blot hybridization, semi-quantitative and/or realtime RT-PCRs, the alteration of SOD gene transcripts in shark liver was examined during the experimental acute exposures to cadmium. The expression of SOD at mRNA level was up-regulated both by injection (0, 0.5, 1 or 2 mg $CdCl_2/kg$ body weight for 48 hours) and by immersion (0 or $5{\mu}M$ Cd for 0, 1, 4 and 7 days) treatments of cadmium. The transcriptional stimulation of shark SOD gene by cadmium exposure was dependent upon doses and durations: there was a trend toward more increase in higher dose and longer durations of exposure. The hepatic SOD mRNA levels showed also a general agreement with the tissue cadmium concentrations accumulated in immersion exposure. This result may provide useful strategy to develop a fine molecular biomarker at mRNA level for detecting aquatic pollution caused by toxic metals.
Increased Tuberculosis Burden Due to Demographic Transition in Korea from 2001 to 2010

Background: Notified tuberculosis (TB) cases in Korea have not decreased over the last decade (2001-2010). Methods: To clarify the reasons, we analyzed an annual report on notified tuberculosis patients and age-specific population drift in Korea. Results: Compared to the age-specific notified TB cases between 2001 and 2010, distinctive features in notified TB cases and new cases increased markedly in people aged 45-54 years and in patients over 65 years old, whereas those between 15-34 years in 2010 decreased drastically. In particular, notified TB individuals over 65 years old occupied 29.6% of the cases in 2010, which was 1.5 times higher than that in 2001. The main reason not to decrease in notified TB patients for the last decade (2001-2010) was due to the increasing elderly population as well as the aging of baby boomers, which have a higher risk of TB development. Conclusion: Korea needs to pay attention to the older population in order to successfully decrease the burden of TB in the future.

Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant tumor of gestational trophoblastic neoplasm that characteristically outgrows its blood supply. Metastases occur most commonly in lung, vagina, central nervous system, liver and gastrointestinal tract. Five percent of patients presenting with choriocarcinoma develop small bowel metastasis. We report a rare case of metastatic choriocarcinoma, which is initial presentation of jejunal perforation in absence of primary uterine lesion. A 40-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding. She gave a past history of dilatation and curettage (D&C) at local clinic center under the impression of H-mole, 2 years ago. She had been treated with single dose methotrexate, too. The radiological studies revealed distal jejunal mass,such like lymphoma, with perforation and liver and lung metatstasis. But there was no intrauterine lesion. The initial serum beta-human chorioanic gonadotropin (β-hCG) level was 8,837mIU/mL. She underwent end-to-end anastomosis for panperitonitis, which was suspected to rupture due to lymphoma. And diagnostic curettage was done for vaginal bleeding and elevated hCG level. The biopsy of small bowel was revealed a metastatic choriocarcinoma but curettage finding was not specific. Seven days after the operation, she had the rupture of aggravated metastatic liver mass, and was performed the embolization. Chemotherapy was started with EMA/CO regimen.

The Epidemiology of Q fever outbreak at an meat packaging business in South Korea

Introduction : Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. A Q fever outbreak occurred among the workers in a meat packaging company on December 2017 at A city in South Korea. Epidemiologic investigations were performed to clarify the cause and the transmission route of the outbreak. Methods : We conducted a questionnaire survey among 25 persons who worked at the company between July 1 and December 11, 2017, and we examined the 25 blood specimens and 36 environmental specimens for the C. burnetii. In addition, we examined on a farmer and 268 goat of the farm that supplied the meat, for the C. burnetii. The confirmed case was defined as a workers who participated in the company with positive results for the PCR or antibody test and responsible symptoms of Q fever. Results: The attack rate of the Q fever among the workers was 32%. The workers of meat packaging were found to be at the highest risk(relative risk 7.6; 95% confidence interval 1.187-52.951). Most of the meat packaging workers(75%) were not wearing masks during work, and there were no suitable ventilation and air conditioning facilities in the place where the meat packaging was done. In 10 of the 36 environmental specimens were positive PCR test for the C. burnetii (27.7%). 21 of 268 goats in the farm was infected by C. burnetii (7.8%), and the farmer was identified as asymptomatic case of Q fever. Conclusion: We concluded that the route of transmission of the outbreak was inhalation of aerosol generated during the cutting of goat meat infected by C. burnetii. Meat packaging workers need to wear masks and follow personal hygiene compliance, and the work area needs ventilation to ensure adequate air circulation. Infected patients must be required to follow-up to confirm chronic progression.
