In digital microfluidics, droplet-based technology has inherent limitation of the quiescent flow condition at low Reynolds number, which causes mixing samples confined within the droplets to be challenging. Recently, solutal Marangoni-driven vortical flows have emerged as a promising approach for digital microfluidic mixing. Despite its simplicity, the solutal Marangoni effect still demands a long time for sample mixing, which makes it difficult to be utilized for practical engineering applications. Here, we propose a new digital microfluidic mixing method by accelerated solutal Marangoni flows in liquid sessile drops based on improved ultrasound-induced heating device. We theoretically and experimentally investigated the accelerated Marangoni flow and confirmed that droplet mixing can be achieved within a few seconds even for high viscosity liquids. The proposed heater-embedded droplet mixing platform can be fabricated in small size, allowing it to be integrated with other microfluidic platforms. We believe that the proposed droplet mixing platform can be utilized for a variety of practical applications in bioassays, clinical diagnostics, and drug screening.

Nine patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) or idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep disorder (iRBD) who underwent GI operation and had full-depth intestinal blocks were included. All patients were selected from our previous study population. A total of 10 slides (5 serial sections from the proximal and distal blocks) per patient were analyzed.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients does not halt disease progression, as these patients will progress and develop disabling non-levodopa responsive symptoms. These features may act as milestones that represent the overall functionality of patients after DBS. The objective of this study was to investigate the development of clinical milestones in advanced PD patients who underwent bilateral STN-DBS.

이 논문은 비콘과 QR코드를 이용해 방문자 식별 및 원격제어를 구현한 스마트 도어락 시스템을 제안한다. 1인가구의 지속적인 증가에 따라 도어락에 원격제어와 보안의 필요성이 부각된다. 기존 논문에서는 동영상 전송방식, 블루투스 통신 방식 등 다양한 기술을 이용하여 구현한 도어락 시스템을 제안한다. 하지만 동영상 전송방식은 센서가 방문자를 오판단하는 경우가 발생하고, IoT기반의 실시간 스트리밍 기술을 이용한 도어락은 해제 후에 사용자가 집의 내부를 모니터링할 수 없다. 이 논문은 비콘과 안드로이드 어플리케이션, 라즈베리파이를 이용한 방문자 식별 및 원격제어를 구현한다. 또한 3D프린팅을 이용하여 제작한 프로토타입을 보인다.

<P><B><I>Background/Aims:</I></B> Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging metabolic disease. Although it leads to severe hepatic diseases including steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatic cancer, little is known about therapy to prevent and cure hepatic steatosis, the first step of NAFLD. We conducted this investigation to unveil the mechanism of hepatic steatosis. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> We established a novel chronic NAFLD mouse model through whole body irradiation and verified the model through histological and biochemical analysis. To find molecular mechanism for hepatic steatosis, we analyzed hepatic transcriptomic profiles in this model and selected target molecule. To induce the expression of lactotransferrin (Ltf) and regulate the NAFLD, growth hormone (GH) and coumestrol was introduced to hepatocyte and mice. The universal effect of coumestrol was confirmed by administration of coumestrol to NAFLD mouse model induced by high-fructose, high-fat, and MCD diet. <B><I>Results:</I></B> It was observed that decreased hepatic Ltf expression led to excessive hepatic lipid accumulation in NAFLD mouse. Furthermore, we found that GH was decreased in irradiated mice and functioned as an upstream regulator of Ltf expression. It was observed that GH could stimulate Ltf expression and prevent uptake of dietary lipids in hepatocytes, leading to rescue of NAFLD. Finally, we suggested that coumestrol, a kind of isoflavonoid, could be used as an inducer of hepatic Ltf expression through cooperation with the GH signaling pathway both <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. <B><I>Conclusions</I></B><I>:</I> Hepatic Ltf prevents hepatic steatosis through inhibition of dietary lipid uptake in radiation-induced NAFLD mouse model. We also suggest coumestrol as a drug candidate for prevention of NAFLD.</P>
