The experiments have attempted to isolate thiobacilli in oder to studies on the elimination of sulfer in Kerosene and on the refinning of a metal mines. The Thiobacilli isolated from soil and sewage which were collected through south Korea identified as follows accordance with Waksman's observation and description of Bergey's manual. Strain SP-S-1 was considered the same as T. thioparus, and Sp-Se-3 the same as T. denitrificans, and TF-S-5 the same as T. ferrooxidans, and ON-Se-1 the same as T. concretivorus, and WO-Se-3 was identified with T. thiooxidans.

The doctoral program of school of Public Health in Seoul National University was established in 1976 and about 100 students have graduated or completed the course. Even though there have been several studies on evaluating the educational programs of the school, both master's and doctorate's since early 1980s, this study was carried out to identify needs of students, their performance and perceived achievements, unmet needs and barriers in achieving their educational goals only on doctoral graduates. The study was done by the students of doctoral program taking 'evaluative research in public health services' course as a practice under the direction of the teaching staff. Out of 91 eligibles 51 persons responded to the mail and/or telephone interview, and the results obtained are as followings: 1) The goal of the doctoral program of the Public Health, SNU that was to produce competent public health specialists furnished with full abilities of performong research, education and administration(service)has not been changed since 1976 as was set on the program establishment. 2) The objective of enrollment to the program stated by the subjecs varied considerably; majority of them(47%) for expanding scope of public health sceience, for advanced degree(39%), for contribution to the progress of public health sceience(20%), for better job(20%) and for pure academic interest(2%). 3) The needs of students by area of concern, for instance research, theaching and administration, each classified into several performance is viewed as the proportion accomplished out of needs, which are quantified by 5-point Likert scale, most of the graduates indicated that they have accomplished their needs in 83-92% for research abilities, 75-92% for teaching sbilities and 72-96% for administration abilities, the average performance being the highes in research. 5) The barriers that hindered their performance were the school facilities, such as library(72.5%), deficient funds for research(39.2%), insufficient students' room(33.3%) and deficient laboratory supplies(25.5%). 6) The barrier related to student's characteristics were insufficient study time for part-time student(56.9%), deficient study motivation(45.1%), tendency to take easy curriculum(29.4%) and addmittence of less qualificated students(19.6%). 7) The barrier related to professor's characteristics were deficiency of self-development endeavour(62.7%), lack of professor majoring in some particular fields of public health(39.2%), infrequent collaborative researches/activities with students (17.6%), and absolutely deficient number of professors that are necessary for the program(17.6%). In general, however, the graduates appered to be satisfied in terms of what they have accomplished through the current educational program, which have been revised by the school from time to time to cope with the student's as well as community's demand.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>KSTAR experiments have been conducted aiming at establishing a real-time control system that uses multiple actuators (NBI and ECH) to control the plasma profiles (T<SUB>e</SUB> and q profiles) and validating an applied physics-based plasma profile response model. Toward establishing the multiple plasma profile control system, the control experiment of the electron temperature profile has been performed in KSTAR as a first step. Although the plasma profile control system was in the commissioning phase, the electron temperature was feedback controlled successfully in real-time while the normalized radial profile of electron temperature remained nearly constant. In the circumstance, the implemented physics-based response model was successfully validated against control experiments with a step variation on the control target and an application of multiple actuators. The robustness of the controller is examined against an external disturbance in which a static version of the control matrix was used.</P>
Progress in the development of heating systems towards long pulse operation for KSTAR

<P>Construction of the Korea superconducting tokamak advanced research (KSTAR) tokamak is in its final phase. For the long-pulse KSTAR discharges, the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) and neutral beam injection (NBI) heating systems are expected to play important roles through a selective heating of ions and electrons, control of the plasma pressure and current profiles, a core fuelling and beam diagnostics for the KSTAR. In addition, the ICRF system is expected to be used for possible discharge cleaning and assisting in the tokamak startup. In this paper, the recent progress in the development of the ICRF and the NBI heating systems is described. The four-strap ICRF antenna has been successfully tested for a voltage up to 41 kV for a pulse length of 300 s (to 46 kV for 20 s) in a test chamber. A prototype KSTAR NBI system has been developed. At present, the system has successfully produced a 1 MW beam power for 200 s and a 3.5 MW output beam power for 4 s.</P>

<P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Advanced biliary cancer is often treated with fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of a combination of S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine prodrug, and oxaliplatin in patients with metastatic biliary cancer.</P><P><B>Methods:</B></P><P>Patients with histologically confirmed metastatic biliary cancer and no history of radiotherapy or chemotherapy were enrolled. Oxaliplatin was administered intravenously (130 mg m<SUP>−2</SUP>), followed by 14-day administration of oral S-1 (40 mg m<SUP>−2</SUP> twice daily) with a subsequent 7-day rest period every 21 days. Pharmacokinetic analysis of S-1 was performed at cycle 1. Patients were genotyped for <I>CYP2A6</I> polymorphisms (<SUP>*</SUP>1, <SUP>*</SUP>4, <SUP>*</SUP>7, <SUP>*</SUP>9 or <SUP>*</SUP>10), and pharmacokinetic and clinical parameters compared according to the <I>CYP2A6</I> genotype.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>In total, 49 patients were evaluated, who received a median of four cycles. The overall response rate was 24.5%. Median progression-free and overall survival was 3.7 and 8.7 months, respectively. The most common haematological grade 3 out of 4 toxicity was neutropenia (14%), while non-hematological grade 3 out of 4 toxicities included anorexia (14%), nausea (12%), asthenia (10%), vomiting (10%), and diarrhoea (4%). Biotransformation of S-1 (AUC<SUB>0−24 h</SUB> of 5-fluorouracil/AUC<SUB>0−24 h</SUB> of tegafur) was 1.85-fold higher for the <I>*1/*1</I> group than for the other groups (90% confidence interval 1.37–2.49). Diarrhoea (<I>P</I>=0.0740), neutropenia (<I>P</I>=0.396), and clinical efficacy (response rate, <I>P</I>=0.583; PFS, <I>P</I>=0.916) were not significantly associated with <I>CYP2A6</I> genotype, despite differences in 5-FU exposure.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>The combination of S-1 and oxaliplatin appears to be active and well tolerated in patients with metastatic biliary cancer, and thus is feasible as a therapeutic modality. <I>CYP2A6</I> genotypes are associated with differences in the biotransformation of S-1. However, the impact of the <I>CYP2A6</I> polymorphism on variations in clinical efficacy or toxicity requires further evaluation.</P>
Ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles: Synthesis, physicochemical, and magnetic properties

A new synthetic method leading to the formation of polycaprolactone (PCL)/iron oxide nanoparticles using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is described. The unique feature of this method is that the conventional polymerization step can be avoided. A stable colloidal dispersion of the PCL-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (PCLNP) is thus formed in the presence of PVP as a stabilizer. The PCLNP has a mean diameter of 20-50nm as measured by TEM. Magnetic measurement by SQUID shows that the PCLNP has a strong superparamagnetism to be used as a liver MR T2 agent.

Natural convection within a wedge-shaped enclosure has been studied by using finite different method. Radial surfaces of the wedge are isothermally hot and cold walls while circumferential surfaces are insulated walls. The Rayleigh numbers change from 10³ to 10^(5). The results show isotherms, streamlines and velocity profiles as well as heat transfer correlations. There is a wedge angle, which minimizes the mean Nusselt number.
