Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton’s The Honest Whore, Part I, and Dekker’s sequel, The Honest Whore, Part II, dramatize a whore named Bellafront, who repents of her sin and becomes an honest wife. Despite her repentance, Bellafront’s reformed life continues to be tested, and her chastity is at stake due to her abusive husband. Her sexual conversion is proved only when she completely internalizes patriarchal gender ideology that imposes submissive roles on women. Ironically, it is respectable wives, not the whore, who challenge the patriarchal authority by sexual transgression. Both Infelice and Viola energetically explore the ways to fulfill their desires within the limitations of gender roles. Crossing the boundary between chastity and whoredom, they become whores. As the term “whore” in early modern England was not restricted to a prostitute but broadly referred to any woman who was in breach of socially inscribed gender norms, Infelice and Viola are called whores. Examining a wide spectrum of female sexual performances in the plays, this paper argues that women’s boundary- crossing demonstrates the paradox of whoredom that chastity is always already negotiable, and desire and chastity are compatible.

In this paper Dielectric and polarizable properties of 0.9Pb(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O_(3)-0.1PbTiO_(3) Ceramics have been investigated as a addition of the amount of La_(2)O_(3)(0≤x≤0.05). The Temperature-dependant electrostictive characteristics of 0.9PMN-0.1PT relaxor ferroelectic system were improved by enhencing the extent of the diffuse phase transition(DPT). This was achieved using PMN-PTceramics by the partial substitution of La at the Pb site. The curie temperature and the maximum dielectic permittivity decreased by substituting La and the electic field-related hysteresis phenomena decreased with increasing La substitution amount.

The main purpose of this paper is to design and implement forest fire information system (FOFIS) for effective prevention of forest fire using GIS, database, 3-D graphics, and simulation techniques. In contrast to conventional fire information systems that are mostly based on the 2-D graphics and analytic modeling approaches, we have proposed the cell-based modeling approaches, i.e., spatial, data, and simulation modeling approaches. The cell-based spatial modeling is proposed by eliminating the cliff effect of the typical elevation model so that it can provide realistic 3-D graphics of the forest fire. The cell-based data modeling of geography, meteorology, and forestry information is also proposed. The cell-based dynamic modeling for forecasting of the fire diffusion is developed using the variable structure modeling techniques. Several simulation tests of FOFIS performed on a sample forest area of Chungdo, Kyungsangbukdo will demonstrate our approaches.

도펀트 첨가에 따른 0.57Pb(Sc_1/2Nb_1/2)O₃-0.43PbTiO₃ 세라믹스의 유전 및 압전특성

Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $0.57Pb(Sc_{1/2}Nb_{1/2})O_{3}-0.43PbTiO_{3}$, which is the morphotropic phase boundary composition for the PSN-PT system, were investigated as a function of $Fe_{2}O_{3},\;Nb_{2}O_{5}\;and\;MnO_{2}$ addition 0 wt% to 0.9 wt%. The maximum dielectric constant of ${\varepsilon}_{33}/{\varepsilon}_{o}=2054$ and the minimum dielectric loss of $tan{\delta}=0.37\;%$ at room temperature were obtained at 0.1 wt% of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ and 0.5 wt% of $MnO_{2}$ addition, respectively. With addition of 0.5 wt% $Nb_{2}O_{5}$ and $0.5\;wt%\;MnO_{2}$, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_{p}$ and mecanical quality factor $Q_{m}$ were significantly increased, respectively. The maximum electromechanical coupling factor $k_{p}=61.5\;%$ was obtained by addition of $Nb_{2}O_{5}$ and high mechanical quality factor $Q_{m}=919$ was obtained by addition of $MnO_{2}$. The $Q_{m}(=919)$ value is 3.3 times larger than that of non-doped 0.57PSN-0.43PT ceramics.

음성 특성 지표를 이용한 음성 인식 성능 예측

본 논문에서는 음성 특성 지표를 이용한 음성 인식 성능 예측 실험의 내용을 소개한다. 선행 실험에서 효과적인 음성 인식 성능 예측을 위해 대표적인 음성 인식 성능 지표인 단어 오인식률과 상관도가 높은 여러 가지 특성 지표들을 조합하여 새로운 성능 지표를 제안하였다. 제안한 지표는 각 음성 특성 지표를 단독으로 사용할 때 보다 단어 오인식률과 높은 상관도를 나타내 음성 인식 성능을 예측하는데 효과적임을 보였다. 본 실험에서는 이 결과를 근거하여 조합에 사용된 음성 특성 지표를 채택하여 4차원 특징 벡터를 생성하고 GMM 기반의 음성 인식 성능 예측기를 구축한다. 가우시안 요소를 증가시키며 실험한 결과 제안된 시스템은 babble 잡음, 자동차 잡음에서 모두 SNR이 낮을수록 단어 오인식률을 높은 확률로 예측함을 확인하였다. This paper presents our study on speech recognition performance prediction. Our initial study shows that a combination of speech quality measures effectively improves correlation with Word Error Rate (WER) compared to each speech measure alone. In this paper we demonstrate a new combination of various types of speech quality measures shows more significantly improves correlation with WER compared to the speech measure combination of our initial study. In our study, SNR, PESQ, acoustic model score, and MFCC distance are used as the speech quality measures. This paper also presents our speech database verification system for speech recognition employing the speech measures. We develop a WER prediction system using Gaussian mixture model and the speech quality measures as a feature vector. The experimental results show the proposed system is highly effective at predicting WER in a low SNR condition of speech babble and car noise environments.

미들턴의 『미카엘마스 개정기』에 나타난 토지, 도시, 그리고 모방 환상

This paper examines Thomas Middleton’s Michaelmas Term that dramatizes both the attraction and danger of London through class conflict between a landed gentry Easy and a London merchant Quomodo. Easy tries to embrace conspicuous consumption and self-indulgence in the urban life that he regards as a highly developed and refined culture. Quomodo tricks Easy into mortgaging his estate to him with the aid of his fellow tricksters Shortyard and Falselight. Quomodo’s financial scam on a credit network shows that London is an arena of struggle in which individuals pursue their own profit at the sacrifice of others. I, however, contend that the moral dichotomy of an innocent country and an evil city that the gullible Easy and the vicious Quomodo represent simplifies the play by focusing only on class conflict. While Easy and Quomodo conflict with each other as swindler and victim, they ironically have mimetic fantasies for each other. Easy has a fantasy for living as a Londoner, and is willing to do anything simply because it is in fashion in London. Quomodo, complaining that he cannot but bequeath the unfair profits he makes to his son Sim, wants to make Sim the legal heir to the estate he takes from Easy. Both Easy’s and Quomodo’s mimetic fantasies imply that their desires are not only individual but also social ones. They are rivals but at the same time the mediators who arouse desires in each other. Middleton satirizes both Easy’s foolish pursuit of the urban culture and Quomodo’s passion for upward social mobility. This paper consequently argues that Middleton puts responsibilities on individuals to restore morality and social order to corrupted London in the capitalist market economy.

“’tis our best art to dissemble well”: Performed Chastity and Purloined Women in Thomas Middleton’s A Mad World, My Masters

Thomas Middleton’s A Mad World, My Masters offers a kaleidoscopic view of tricksters who constantly dissemble for their economic and sexual profits. A prodigal Dick Follywit cheats his rich grandfather Sir Bounteous Progress, a seemingly chaste wife Mrs. Harebrain commits adultery, and Sir Bounteous’ kept-mistress Frank Gullman passes as a virgin. The expansion of market economy in early modern England that established social relations via economic transactions set a stage for these tricksters to dissemble. In particular, women’s dissembling is worthy of notice in this play. The courtesan launches herself into a marriage market by performing virginity, and Mrs. Harebrain cuckolds her jealous husband by feigning her fidelity. Both women’s theatricality makes sexually anxious men deceived by their own follies. The outstanding trickster Follywit is ironically tricked into a marriage to the courtesan, and Harebrain inadvertently gives his wife a chance to cuckold him. Examining the way in which dissembling works in the play, I will argue that women’s performances function as a double-edged sword. Performed chastity intensifies male antipathy towards desiring women but mocks imprudent husbands whose sexual fantasy of virginity make them blind to the fact that chastity can be performed. Men’s efforts to regulate female sexuality turn out to be futile, and their women are purloined by their sexual rivals. Meanwhile, dissembling is for women a means to constitute themselves as transgressive yet autonomous desiring subjects despite patriarchal restrictions of female sexuality and to survive the mad world in which sex is the close nexus of money.
