This work has been conducted to select appropriate filter materials for removing carbonyl compounds in mainstream tobacco smoke. To investigate of the usability of this filter materials, two types of bead ion exchangers were synthesized and their adsorption characteristics for carbonyl compounds were investigated. Sulfonic acid group-containing cation exchanger and ammonium group-containing anion exchanger were synthesized by the suspension polymerization of glycidylmethacrylate(GMA) and divinylbenzene(DVB) followed by the subsequent functionalization, respectively. The removal efficiency of carbonyl compounds by these two ion exchangers increased in the presence of moisture. However, the amount of carbonyl compounds adsorbed on the anion exchanger was larger than that on the cation exchanger under two levels of water contents tested. This phenomenon seems to arise from the electron delocalization in carbonyl group of the anion exchangers. There was not any significant relationship between the amount of carbonyl compounds adsorbed on ion exchangers and the length of adsorption column. From the large ion exchange capacity and rapid ion exchange reaction rate of the anion exchanger, it is suggested that the anion exchanger may be a good filter material for removing carbonyl compounds in the mainstream tobacco smoke.

A new procedure has been developed for the quantitation of aromatic amines in mainstream cigarette smoke. Two solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean up steps, using a different retention mechanisms, are required to process the samples. The first step used a cation-exchange cartridge, followed by a second step that used a cartridge with a hydrophobic retention character. The aromatic amines eluted from the second SPE cartridge are derivatized with pentafluoropropionic anhydride. This new method have advantages over other reported techniques, being sensitive, robust, and easily automated. The detection limits were ranged from 0.12 ng/mL for 1-aminonaphthalene to 0.16 ng/mL for 3-aminobiphenyl and the recoveries were from 97 to 106%. Compared with other reports for analysis of 2R4F reference cigarette, this method shows a close analytical data and good repeatability.

Gas phase and particulate phase radicals in mainstream cigarette smoke were determined Electron Spin Resonance(ESR) spectroscopy. The free radicals in particulate phase have been investigated by benzene extract of Cambridge Filter Pad containing the smoke condensate. Spin trapping method in conjunction with ESR was used to investigate free radicals in the gas phase of cigarette smoke. Several analytical experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimal conditions for maximum signal intensities and reproducibility of results. All the tests were optimized and normalized using the University of Kentucky 2R4F reference cigarette. The optimal conditions were 0.6 mL for analysis volume of ESR, $4{\sim}5\;mL$ for collection volume of spin-adducts, and PBN for quantification of free radicals in gas phase. The radical levels of Kentucky 2R4F cigarettes were found $2.18{\times}10^{14}\;spins/cig.$ and $2.10{\times}10^{15}\;spins/cig.$ in gas phase.

To use the filter materials for selective removal of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke, hydrazine such as 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and dansylhydraznie impregnated adsorbents were prepared with perchloric acid or phosphoric acid as a accelerator in hydrazone formation reaction. The change of morphology of adsorbents in various of impregnator were investigated by SEM. Impregnation amount caused by reaction time, acid type and impregnation reagent, and the adsorption properties of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke were investigated. Amounts of impregnation was increased as increasing reaction time. The removal amount for vapor phase carbonyl compounds by 2,4-DNPH impregnated adsorbent was higher than that of dansylhydrazine impregnated adsorbent. The selectivity of 2,4-DNPH impregnated polyacrylic type adsorbent was superior to those of other adsorbents. This results indicated that the 2,4-DNPH impregnated polyacrylic adsorbent was applicable to cigarette filter material because of its fast reactivity and porosity.

The waterborne polyurethane was synthesized by polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA). Physical properties of cellulose fabrics treated with 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dihydoroxy-2-imidazolidone (DMDHI) containing waterborne polyurethane were investigated by UTM and FT-IR Spectrometer. It is known that optimized UV intensity and cure temperature are 450 Wand $170^{\circ}C$, respectively. Add-on(%) was increased with increasing concentration of resin and time. Therefore, the results showed that wrinkle recovery of the fabrics cured with UV were better than that of heat-cure. When PUD as an additive was treated together with DMDHI, tensile and bursting strength increased with increasing waterborne polyurethane concentration. Yellowness index(YI) values for UV-cured fabrics were lower than those of heat-cured ones.

The Fishtail Chimney system mounted on 1 channel smoking machine is not appropriate for the routine analysis of sidestream smoke, because of its low repeatability and very long time required for smoke collection. To overcome this inconvenience, we developed a new sidestream smoke collecting apparatus compatible for 8 channel linear smoking machine. An electric motor driven stroke and automatic control system were adopted in this device to maximize convenience and efficiency of its operation. Also, we carried out the international collaborative study on monitoring sidestream smoke analysis to test the performance of this system. From the statistical analysis of the data obtained in our laboratory and other participating labs, it has been indicated that the newly developed sidestream smoke collection apparatus could be applicable to the routine analysis of sidestream smoke.
