In modern systems technology, increasingly more systems are anticipated to operate in real-time environment. These systems are usually complex to implement since it is not easy to satisfy the real-time requirement for both hardware and software components simultaneously. In this paper, we first review an object-oriented development process that was proposed earlier for software-intensive real-time system using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). We then study how to improve the problems that the UML approach might have. Applying the systems engineering(SE) process yields useful results which include : 1) an improved requirements management over the whole system life-cycle ; 2) a detailed scenario on how to carry out the SE process ; and 3) a conversion process from the text-based requirements to the UML-based graphic ones.

The necessity of the new system development arises in both defence and commercial systems industry either when a breakthrough in technology needs to be realized in the form of a brand-new system or when the existing product already in operation needs to be upgraded to satisfy the increasing stakeholder's requirements. In the latter case, it is not rare that specific system technical specifications on the existing products are not available. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to handle the difficulty when an upgraded system is required to be developed based on the existing product whose detailed technical specifications cannot be obtained. A step-by-step process is described based on the reverse engineering of the existing product. As a result, a logical system model is obtained for the product. The process developed is further enhanced and evaluated by the computer-aided system engineering tool. The resulting logical system model should be helpful in the next phase of the new product development.
철도안전정보 지원시스템의 요구사항 개발을 위한 엔터프라이즈 아키텍처 활용 연구

이 논문은 엔터프라이즈 아키텍처 접근을 기반으로 시스템 수준의 철도안전정보지원시스템의 안전 요소에 대한 요구사항 개발에 관한 내용이다. 모델링은 다음과 같은 절차를 따른다. 첫째로 요구사항은 EIA-632프로세스를 따른다. 또한 관련 전문가의 도움을 받아 사고기반 시나리오를 개발한다. 개발된 시나리오는 DoDAF모델을 지원하는 CASE 도구의 지원을 받아 구현한다. 이 결과는 시스템관련 종사자의 이해를 돕는다. This paper is concerned with the development of the requirements for railway safety support information systems. The five safety elements at the system level have been modeled based on the enterprise architecture approach. Specifically, the modeling has been carried out as follows. First, the requirements are derived according to EIA-632 process. Also, the possible scenarios on the accident-investigation-support are developed from the help of relevant personnel in the area. The developed scenarios are reflected in modeling the operational and system architectures of DoDAF approach using a CASE tool. From this architecture model, we can easily get the specifications required for the operations. These results can give the improved understanding of the railway safety system to the members of diverse teams and areas working for the system development.

The emerging standards since 1990's can be classified as 'system standards' (process-oriented standards) and they specify the process of an enterprise and also apply to almost all industries regardless of size, type and products. Notice that the conventional specification-oriented standards present relatively clear criteria even though the structure, performance, and terminology are defined in text-based form. However, the system standards dealing with the processes do not present a coherent guide. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze them with the same viewpoint, thereby resulting in differences in the level of understanding. This study is aimed at graphically modeling the system standards originally described in text-based form. The study has been carried out in the framework of the PMTE (Process, Methods, Tools, and Environment) paradigm. The system standard targeted here is ISO/IEC 15288. Firstly, review of the literature on the systems engineering (SE) standard/process and on the graphic model IDEF0 was done, respectively, for the parts of 'E' and 'M'. Then the SE process of the MIL-STD 499B was applied to ISO/IEC 15288 as 'P'. Finally, the graphical model was generated by AI0Wins as 'T'. As a result, the graphical model-based approach can complement the drawbacks of the text-based form.
