영어 기초능력 향상을 위한 Step by Step Study Program

In order to improve students’ English basic proficiency, universities should develop a kind of basic English program, such as a ‘step by step study program,’ held after school or at any other time. This program has been able to give many good effects to the students who have joined it. The students have learned and practiced basic level of vocabulary, grammar, and structure for almost a year. Considering the students’ low level of English proficiency, this program has focused on taking care of their intrinsic psychological peace and stability, to produce and maintain motivation. Finally, they have become much more interested in studying English, and in continuing studying it, and are expected to be good students and have good jobs in the future. So, hopefully, all universities will share this program and be very competitive although they have the low level students now.
‘콘텍스트 틀’에서 본 샐린저 작품의 시모어의 자살 원인

이 논문은 셀린저의 「바나나피쉬」에서 시모어의 자살원인을 동양종교와 관련지어 규명해보고자 한다. 그는 「바나나피쉬」로부터 「테디」 「하프워쓰」에 이르기까지 동양적인 종교 관점으로 작품을 썼다. 「테디」에서 그는 시모어가 테디로 환생하는 것을 그렸고, 「하프워쓰」에서는 시모어의 어린 시절에 대해 묘사했다. 시모어는 비록 놀라운 영재이고 열정적인 성격이었지만, 그의 관능성과 정서적 불안정성에 어려움을 겪고 캠프에서 영적이지 못한 사람들에게 적의를 갖는다. 이 갈등으로 인해 그는 캠프에 참여하지 않고 동양종교에 대한 명상을 하게 된다. 이 작품들을 콘텍스트 틀에서 알 수 있듯이, 시모어는 윤회나 환생의 이유로 자살했음을 알 수 있다. This paper is to identify the causes for Seymour’s suicide in Salinger’s Bananafish. He wrote some works related to Oriental religion from Bananafish through Teddy to Hapworth. In Teddy he wrote as to transmigration from Seymour to Teddy Orientalized, and in Hapworth described Seymour’s childhood. Though Seymour was an astonishing child prodigy and passionate character, he was troubled because of his sensuality, emotional instability, and he got the malice toward the unspiritual people in the camp. So these conflicts forced him to withdraw from the camp, and meditate upon Oriental religion while staying there. As we see these works in the context framework, we can understand Seymour was suicided by the reason of samsara or transmigration.

This study is aimed at analyzing what affective factors the students joining the English Military Academy Program have, and how those affective factors have been changed thanks to the strategies such as motivation, attitude and confidency. This English Military Academy program in 2012 was designed for the college students to study English intensively. 60 students participated in the program for 3 weeks were changed thanks to the strategies and managements. The results of the questionnaires and counsels indicated that the students were highly motivated to study English, and the average of students’ TOEIC score was also much increased.

이 논문은 학생들이 영어번역 학습을 전문가 차원으로 진행하기 위해 영어번역 교과목에 융합적인 시도 차원에서 캡스톤 디자인 코스를 도입한 케이스 스터디이다. 7명의 학생이 한 팀이 되었는데, 이 교과목에 등록한 학생 수가 14명이어서 2개 팀을 자율적으로 조직해 운영했다. 각 팀은 대표를 선출토록 하였고, 이 대표는 회의나 개인별 프리젠테이션, 일정, 토론, 온갖 종류의 서류작업 등의 책임을 맡았다. 모든 절차는 민주적으로 그리고 자율적으로 팀원의 논의와 결정에 따라 진행되었다. 이를 통해 학생들의 자율성, 창의성, 책임감 등을 끌어냈다는 점에서 의의가 있었고, 무엇보다도 이 연구를 통해 학생들이 3년 동안 갈고 닦은 실력을 집약적으로 쏟고 협력하여 노력한 결과 모두 한 작품씩 번역서를 만들어냈다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있었다. 융합시대에 알맞게 영어교육 분야도 캡스톤 디자인 코스 같은 접근방법을 받아들여 효과적인 결과를 얻을 수 있도록 개방적이어야 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. This paper presents a case study on the introduction of Capstone Design to English education fields as a convergent trial for students to get some professional English translation practice. We had two teams with 7 students. Team members chose a manager who would schedule their meetings and presents, lead discussions, do all the paper works, and so on. According to their discussions and decisions all the processes have been done by themselves. Thanks to managing this project democratically and autonomously, drawing the students` autonomy, creativity, responsibility, and other good things is meaningful. Furthermore, it is very meaningful that each member could get an English-Korean translation book by putting into all 3-year knowledge and using it intensively. Through this study we understand that we should be open to other convergent fields if we intend to get good results like using the capstone design course to the English education fields.

The development of the internet has effected ever-increasing changes within the paradigm of education. On-line education is receiving acclamation for its convenience and economic feasibility. However, few studies have been conducted to pinpoint the problems and shortcomings of on-line education. This study is intended to develop a mode of English education by integrating on-line and off-line education systems and resources resulted in lessening the problems of on-line education, and to demonstrate the efficacy of the mode.

The Effect of Schema on Reading Comprehension of Literary and History Texts

The present study investigates the effects of schema on learners’ reading comprehension of literary and history texts. We try to explore whether schema accumulated by learners affects development in their reading skills in terns of culture and content-based text. This investigation is analyzed vis-a-vis data gathered from interviewing five students at Momo middle school in Gochang Jeonbuk province for one month. The results of the study reveal that prior schemata affect the reading comprehension skill positively. Five subjects were utilized in the investigation. The instruments used were six selected reading materials: one Korean folk tale and one counterpart Greek Myths, and one passage on Korean tradition and one counterpart Filipino tradition, and one passage on Korean history and one counterpart South African history.¹
