A prokaryotic cell has various histone-like proteins also known as nucleoid-associated proteins (NAPs). These proteins bind AT-rich sequence at DNA, which induce DNA wrapping, bending, and bridging, and subsequently regulate the gene expression in bacteria. Because NAPs function in transcriptional silencing of virulence genes, it is important to study their roles in gene silencing and specific mechanisms of these proteins. In this review, we discussed two well-known NAPs, H-NS, and HU, and summarized their roles for gene expression in Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium. Through the oligomerization and filamentation of H-NS, it represses the expression of virulence genes in human pathogenic bacteria, such as Salmonella Typhimurium, and it works with other NAPs positively or negatively. Recently, H-NS also regulates typhoid toxin expression, which causes typhoid fever and systemic disease in human. Additionally, HU regulates the expression of genes related to both virulence and physiology of Salmonella. Therefore, we suggest that NAPs like H-NS and HU are crucial factors to reveal the molecular mechanisms of virulence gene expression in bacteria.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae의 Swd2와 Set1의 결합이 Swd2의 이중적인 기능에 미치는 영향

In eukaryotic cells, histone modification is an important mechanism to regulate the chromatin structure. The methylation of the fourth lysine on histone H3 (H3K4) by Set1 complex is one of the various well-known histone modifications. Set1 complex has seven subunits including Swd2, which is known to be important for H2B ubiquitination dependent on H3K4 methylation. Swd2 was reported to regulate Set1's methyltransferase activity by binding to near RNA recognition motif (RRM) domain of Set1 and to act as a component of CPF (Cleavage and Polyadenylation Factors) complex involved in RNA 3' end processing. According to the recent reports, two functions of Swd2 work independently of each other and the lethality of Swd2 knockout strain was known to be caused by its function as a component of CPF complex. In this study, we found that Swd2 could influence the Set1's stability as well as histone methyltransferase activity through the association with RRM domain of Set1. Also, we found that ${\Delta}swd2$ mutant bearing truncated-Set1, which cannot interact with Swd2, lost its lethality and grew normally. These results suggest that the dual functions of Swd2 in H3K4 methylation and RNA 3' end processing are not independent in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
부모의 권위주의적 양육행동이 아동의 성취압력, 자아존중감, 행복에 미치는 영향: 아동의 성별에 따른 다집단 경로모형

This study examined the causal relationships among parental authoritarian parenting, children's perceived achievement pressure, self-esteem, and happiness. Using data from the 11th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), we analyzed 1,323 child-parent triads. Multi-group path analysis, controlling for child gender, and principal component analysis were employed to assess the construct validity of the measures. The resulting results are as follows. First, maternal authoritarian parenting, but not paternal, was positively associated with children's perceived achievement pressure, regardless of gender. Second, paternal authoritarian parenting negatively influenced sons' self-esteem. Third, there was a reciprocal positive relationship between maternal and paternal authoritarian parenting. Fourth, perceived achievement pressure negatively affected sons' happiness and both daughters' self-esteem and happiness. Fifth, self-esteem positively predicted happiness for both sons and daughters. Based on these findings, the study discusses the implications of these results for child development theories and practical applications.
모둠 독서 토론 담화에 드러난 상호작용 양상 - 모둠원의 관계와 위치 설정을 중심으로

This study examined the influence that the relationships among group members had on reading discussion activities by analyzing the group discussion talks in class, from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. Students showed differences in the frequency of utterances and patterns of major utterances during the reading discussion. Along with the use of pronouns, postposition, and negative expressions, revealed during the discourse, this acted as a sort of power within the group, which tacitly showed positions of each one: leader, conflicted-leader, onlooker, and outsider. In addition, we could confirm that when members with power in the team continuously express negative emotions, these negative emotions spread to the whole group, which eventually hinders reading discussion activities. This study is limited to generalize the above findings, as it is a case study done with a small number of students. Nevertheless, it is meaningful in that it examined the interaction patterns of peers, paying close attention the process of students' group reading discussion.

This study investigates the intersection of individual capabilities and welfare policy awareness, focusing on Seoul's emergency disaster relief funds in 2020. Analyzing data from the 2020 Seoul Welfare Survey, the research reveals that a lack of personal capabilities acts as a hindrance to policy awareness among citizens, challenging traditional rational actor models. Economic capabilities were identified as partially contributing to increased awareness, emphasizing the nuanced role of financial factors. Importantly, the study highlights the often-overlooked impact of health capabilities on awareness, urging a more compassionate approach in welfare policy considerations. The conclusion emphasizes the pivotal role of communication in welfare system design, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies that consider the diverse circumstances of the population. In summary, this research underscores the significance of individual characteristics, particularly health, in shaping policy awareness, providing actionable insights for policymakers aiming to create more inclusive welfare systems.
청소년의 긍정적·부정적 독서 경험에 관한 고찰 ― 독서 경험의 계기와 영향 요인을 중심으로

This study examined the positive and negative effects of reading experiences on adolescents and characteristics of each reading experience. For this purpose, we analyzed descriptive responses regarding positive and negative reading experiences collected via a survey of 1,000 adolescents. Based on the results, the factors of positive and negative reading experiences of adolescents were classified into an external factor(home, school, society, text) and internal factors of individual. It was found that the reasons for the reading experience differed by gender, school level, and reader type. The specific contents of the responses were then analyzed in detail confirming that even if adolescents had similar experiences, they perceived the reading experience positively and negatively differently depending on the presence or absence of “choice and autonomy”, “new experience or emotion”, and “communication with others”.
