Background: To obtain useful safflower resources for breeding and research of functional materials, the present study was conducted to determine fatty acid compositions and antioxidant activities of 281 safflower accessions collected from East Asia including South Korea. Methods and Results: Lipid contents and fatty acids compositions were evaluated using soxhlet extraction and gas chromatography, respectively. A antioxidant activities were analyzed using a spectrophotometer. The evaluation range of safflower accessions showed very wide variation. In terms of lipid contents, the China accessions were higher than the collection from other regions, whereas antioxidant activities did not differ among regions. The result of the principal component analysis showed that the first and second principal component cumulatively explained 90.6% of the total variation. In clustering the safflower accessions, the tree showed four major clades. Group II (16 accessions) was high in lipid content, oleic acid and linoleic acid, whereas group III (50 accessions) exhibited higher antioxidant activities than other groups. Conclusions: It was recommended that the China collections be utilized as a useful resource for research on functional oil materials. These results provided valuable information for safflower breeders and researchers of functional food.

The quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-CRM) has been introduced for military recruits in Korea since 2012. This study was performed to evaluate the immunogenicity of MenACWY-CRM in Korean military recruits. In addition, the influence of tetanus-diphtheria toxoids (Td) vaccination on the vaccine response to MenACWY-CRM was analyzed. A total of 75 military recruits were enrolled. Among them, 18 received a dose of MenACWY-CRM only (group 1), and 57 received Td three days before MenACWY-CRM immunization (group 2). The immunogenicity of MenACWY-CRM was compared between the two groups. The serum bactericidal activity with baby rabbit complement was measured before and three weeks after immunization against serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y. The geometric mean titers (GMTs) against four serogroups were significantly increased in both groups after immunization. Compared to group 2, group 1 exhibited significantly higher vaccine responses in several aspects:post-immune GMTs against serogroup A and C, seroresponse rates against serogroup A, and a fold increases of titers against serogroup A, C, and Y. MenACWY-CRM was immunogenic against all vaccine-serogroups in Korean military recruits. Vaccine response to MenACWY-CRM was influenced by Td administered three days earlier.

The genus Allium includes hundreds of plant species and is regarded as one of the most cultivated vegetables. It is an important source of novel therapeutic compounds known for their beneficial effects on human health; however, there could be differences in content, composition, type, and bioactivity of the phytochemicals found among the Allium plants. The main purpose of this study was to acquire insights on the variation in antioxidant profiles and phenolic content between Allium accessions in different species, as well as between similar species of several varieties. We collected 112 accessions from more than 20 countries, and grew them under similar agronomic conditions. The antioxidant potential was evaluated by using 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), 1,1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and reducing power (RP) assays. The total phenolic content (TPC) was studied using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. TPC varied from 3.43 (accession 199897) to 22.19 (accession 273483) µg gallic acid equivalent/mg dry weight (DW) of the aerial organs of Allium. The antioxidant activity of Allium samples ranged from 4.37 (accession 806595) to 57.46 (accession number 711971) µg Trolox equivalent/mg DW; 0.35 (accession 117246) to 9.53 (accession 711971) µg ascorbic acid equivalents/mg DW; 2.92 (accession 199890) to 21.20 (accession 803493) µgAAE/mg DW; and 0.80 (accession 117260) to 31.13 (accession 803527) µgAAE/mg DW using ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, and RP assays, respectively. Accessions 273483 (A. cepa), 283346 (A. cepa ‘cepa’), and 803527 (unknown species) had the highest TPC, FRAP, and RP values among those tested, while the highest ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities were recorded in accession 711971 (A. ramosum). Pearson’s coefficient of correlations indicated that variables (TPC, ABTS, DPPH, FRAP, and RP values) correlated significantly each other, with r-values between 0.585 and 0.894. Principal component analysis plots and hierarchical cluster analysis indicated significant variability in antioxidant activity and phenolic content among all the accessions studied, as well as within similar species. Based on our results from principal component and hierarchical cluster analysis, accession 283346 (A. cepa ‘cepa’), K139348 (A. fistulosum), and 711971 (A. ramosum) are potential sources of phenolics and natural antioxidants. The variability in total phenolic and antioxidant activity among the Allium accessions can be used by breeders, food technologists, nutritionist, and researchers for assessing breeding lines for genetic selection and for monitoring levels of these factors during food storage and processing.

A technological advance has triggered both an increasing power consumption with electric power inflation and an environmental destruction. For solving these problems, this study suggests new renewable energy industry as alternative energy industry. To be clear, the new renewable energy industry makes the best use of natural environment in its natural state. Therefore, there are some advantages from environment-friendly industry and some disadvantage of unstable power production and supply owing to limitation of natural environment. For a development of new renewable energy industry as future-oriented industry, it should have been developed from a facility industry type with a large-scale planning site to a technology-intensive industry type with a small-scale planning site. So, it should consider an interrelationship between power plant capacity and related power grid. In the new renewable energy industry, the small hydro power plant has some limitation in investment and technical development due to ambiguous boundary with the medium and mini power plant. As a result, this study suggests new standard of classification and direction of development in associated industry based on its connectivity of electrical power systems.

Rural education experiment theory of China modern rural construction movement on behalf of Liang Shuming is rich. The sequence of the formation can be divided into three stages, Shandong Caozhou school process, Guangzhou Township education and the practice of Henan Village Autonomy College. Liang Shuming based on the the origin, the connotation and the road choice of rural construction, advocated a rural education reform experimental ,on the one hand ,by the conclusion of the village rules to cultivate the public group consciousness and realize social organization at the basic level. on the other hand, he thought we should be appropriate to introduce western cultural and scientific knowledge and means, to promote rural social transformation from traditional to modern. He thought the main way to achieve the goal of rural construction included the Education Society of non-institutionalized education, and at the same time of the reform of school education, we should give full play to the unique function of social education, adult education, public education and other various forms of education to gather together the construction of rural social ideal. Undoubtedly, the construction of rural education experiment theory had not only become the core of Liang Shuming explorating educational way, but also the theoretical orientation of his engaging rural education practice in Zouping. 중국의 현대 향촌 건설 운동의 대표 인물인 양수명(梁漱溟)의 향촌 교육 실험 이론에 관한 내용들은 매우 다양하며 풍부하게 구성되어 있다. 이처럼 풍부하게 형성된 그의 향촌 이론의 내용들은 산동 조주판학(曹州辦學) 과정과 광주향치(廣州鄉治) 교육활동 그리고 하남촌치학원(河南村治學院)의 실천 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 양수명의 향촌 건설에 대한 동기, 내면 및 방향 선택에 있어서의 그의 사고는, 향촌 교육개혁 실험이 향규민약(鄉規民約)의 체결을 통해 첫째는 새로운 예속을 건설하고 민중의 단결의식을 배양하여 사회의 하부계층을 조직하는 것이고, 둘째는 서양의 문화 과학 지식을 받아들여 향촌사회를 전통에서 현대로 적절하게 전환할 수 있도록 촉진하는 것에 기인하고 있다. 양수명은 향촌 건설이라는 목표가 실현되기 위해서는 큰 교육의 광범위한 틀안에서 비 제도화 교육을 포함한 학교 교육을 개조함과 동시에 사회교육, 성인교육, 민중교육 등 다양한 형식의 교육 그리고 교육 유형의 범주 안에 속한 독특한기능을 갖춘 특수한 교육 등이 충분히 발휘되어 질 수 있도록 해야 하며, 이를 바탕으로 서로 규합하여 향촌의 이상 사회 건설에 협력해야 한다고 생각했다. 향촌교육 실험이론의 구성은 양수명의 신유학 교육의 활로를 탐색하는 핵심내용이 되었을 뿐만 아니라, 양수명으로 하여금 산동 추평(鄒平)을 중심으로 한향촌교육 실천 활동이론을 직접 지도하며 실천하도록 만들었다.
