조선 후기 호락논쟁(湖洛請爭)에서 보이는 근대적 사유에 관한 연구

21세기에 들어오면서 세계인들은 한국과 일본을 근대화된 국가로 인식해 왔다. 이것은 2009년 6월에 이집트에서 현 미국 대통령 오바마(Barack Hussein Obama)의 연설문 속에도 들어 있다. 그렇지만 아직도 동아시아 지역의 근대화 과정은 완전히 설명되지 못하고 있다. 특히 한국에서는 1990년대 근대화의 자신감 이후 전통에 대한 연구가 활발하지만, 아직도 유학 또는 성리학이 근대화에 영향을 미쳤다는 사고가 완전한 논리를 갖추고 있지 못한 실정이다. ‘과연 조선 성리학과 근대화는 어떤 관련이 있을까?’ 이것이 바로 논자가 이 글을 쓴 원인이다. 이러한 의문에서 출발한 논자는 18세기 조선에서 발생한 호락논쟁(湖洛詢爭)에서 근대성을 찾고자 하였다. 남당(南塘)의 ‘성삼층설(性三層說)’과 이에 기인한 ‘인물성이론(人物性異論)’은 우주 만물 각각의 존재가 서로 다른 본성을 가지고 있다는 주장으로 기존의 보편적인 이(理)로써 모든 사물의 특성을 통일적으로 설명하고자 하는 이일분수(理一分殊)의 성리학(또는 주자학)적 기본 명제를 넘어서고 있다. 또한 외암이 남당의 이론을 비판하기 위해 주장한 ‘인물성동론(人物性同論)’과‘부중저미발론(不中底未發論)’도 미발상태를 중(中)과 부중(不中)으로 나눔으로써 『중용장구』 주자 주에서 말한 “희노애락은 정이요 그것이 아직 발하지 않음이 성이다.(희노애락,정야,기미발칙성야.)"라는 명제를 넘어서고 있다. 이것은 막스 베버(Max Weber)가 말한 근대로의 이행기에 나타나는 “사적(정서적) 세계와 공적(합리적) 세계의 궁극적 분리에 따른 심성 (mentalities) 의 분화 확대” 및 “문화의 세속화 및 탈주술화,그리고 이에 따른 가치의 통일성 붕괴,통합원리의 부재,상호 갈등하는 다수의 시각 존재”의 양상이다. 이에 의거한다면,18세기에 조선은 기존 성리학적 사고의 틀을 버리고 새로운 철학적 방법의 모색을 통해 이미 상당한 수준의 근대성에 접근했다고 볼 수 있다. 물론 호락논쟁에서 제기된 철학적 논의들이 서구의 이성철학과 꼭 맞아 떨어지는 것은 아니다. 하지만 베버 역시 근대성을 서구화된 문화 환경과 경제사적 역사해석만으로 설명할 수 없다고 했고, 영국의 사회학자 터너(Bryan S. Turner) 또한 자본주의 형성과 과학혁명이 반드시 꼭 일치한다고 보지 않았다. 즉 중요한 건 한 사회가 새로운 사고를 만들어 낼 수 있는 완충 공간과 그것을 지속시킬 수 있는 여건일 것이다. 그런 의미에서 호락논쟁은 성리학에서 기원하여 초성리학적 방향으로 발전한 논쟁으로 이후 19세기부터 20세기 초에 걸쳐 조선에서 발생한 다양한 사회문제인 신분질서의 유지와 변화,외래문물의 수용과 배척,나아가 전제국가의 유지냐 아니면 민주국가로의 이행이냐 등을 준비한 근대성의 한 발현으로 보아야 할 것이다. Coming the 21st century, the world think Korea and Japan one of the modernized nations. The Thinking like this are also in the speech of Barack Hussein Obama, the President of U.S. in June, 2009. But modernity process on East Area not yet reveal perfectly. Especially, in 1990's Korea scholars had lively discussion in the modernity and Korea tradition including Choseon Neo-Confucianism(性理學). Nevertheless yet the study have not standardized. I think that Ho-Rak Debates(湖洛論爭) has showed the course of Korea modemity in the 18th century Choseon. Ho-Rak Debates main issue is Inmulseongdongi-ron(人物性同異論),the conflict on whether the original nature between Human and Animal(or Things) is same or not. That links with the question of the individualism, and furthermore basic conflicts on the feudal nation system and that order. Especially Namdang(南塘 韓元震)’ s Inmulseongi-ron(人物性異論),the theory which the original nature between Human and Animal(or Things) is not same, says that each being(human or thing) have its own individual nature(性 or 理). So in that theory there is rare the classic society-moral purpose that the being should certainly have in the Neo-confucianism system and order. Therefore, through just its view point, there are almost not Neo-confucianism basic principles like Liil-Bunsu(理一分殊),the nature to be given from Cheon(天) when coming into being(本然之性). In East Asia the key of the modernity doesn’t match Europe’s because of its own society, surrounding and thinking system. Although Ho-rak debates doesn’t match to Europe modern philosophic debates, it is possible to say that it already had the major modern points owing to freeing Neo-confucianism order under the 18 century Choseon society.
