The Journal of Studies in Language 30.4, 787-805. This study examined adult L2 learners’ perception and production of non-native speech contrasts. The word-medial singleton/geminate contrasts in Korean sonorant consonants such as /m, n, l/ are differentiated acoustically by temporal parameters, (e.g., duration of closure for medial consonants, duration of preceding vowel). The participants in the present study were two groups of Korean-learning Chinese who differed according to their degrees of experience in Korean(beginners and intermediate learners). Both groups showed better discrimination in perception than in production of the singleton/geminate consonants. The intermediate learners’ discrimination rate in production was obviously higher than the beginners’, whereas there was no significant difference in perception between the two groups. The acoustic analysis clearly indicate that the participants who failed to discriminate singleton/geminate consonants in perception also produced the geminate consonants with significantly longer closure durations than the singleton consonants. This result suggests that they produce such sounds under conscious (i.e. nonautomatic) control. Therefore, L2 learners’ differential pronunciation of L2 contrasts does not necessarily mean that they have established separate phonetic categories for L2 sounds. (Hanyang University)

The simultaneous presentation of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the right and left coronary arteriesis rare. Diabetes mellitus (DM), thrombus due to multivessel spasm, AMI with hypercoagulation,and hypoperfusion of other coronary arteries after an AMI may cause the simultaneous occurrence of right and left coronary artery infarctions. If emergency coronary revascularization (percutaneous coronary intervention, thrombolysis, and coronary artery bypass surgery) is not performed immediately, the mortality rate is very high due to the development of cardiogenic shock and ventricular arrhythmia. Here, we report a number of cases involving the simultaneous development of AMIin two coronary arteries and discuss the importance of rapid revascularization. (Korean J Med 75:586-591, 2008)

With the development of the bio industry, membrane chromatography with a high adsorption efficiency is emerging to replace the existing column chromatography used in the downstream processes of pharmaceuticals, food, etc. In this study, through the deacetylation reaction of two commercial cellulose acetate (CA) membranes with different pore sizes, the porous regenerated cellulose (RC) supports for membrane chromatography were obtained to attach the anion exchange ligands. The adsorptive membranes for anion exchange were prepared by attaching an anion exchange ligand ([3-(methacryloylamino) propyl] trimethylammonium chloride) containing quaternary ammonium groups on the RC supports by grafting and UV polymerization. The protein adsorption capacities of the prepared membranes were obtained through both the static binding capacity (SBC) and the dynamic adsorption capacity (DBC) measurement. As a result, the membrane chromatography with the smaller the pore size, the larger the surface area showed the highest protein adsorption capacity. Membrane chromatography which was prepared by using deacetylated commercial CA support with MAPTAC ligand (i.e., RC 0.8 + MAPTAC: 43.69 mg/ml, RC 3.0 + MAPTAC: 36.33 mg/ml) showed a higher adsorption capacity compared to commercial membrane chromatography (28.38 mg/ml).

In this research, magnesium powder was prepared by gas atomizing. Refinement behaviors of magnesium powder produced under different conditions were investigated using a mechanical milling (attrition milling) process. Analyses were performed to assess the characterization and comparison of milled powder with different steel ball sizes and milling times. The powders were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope, apparent density and powder fluidity. The particle morphology of the Mg powders changed from spherical particles of feed metals to irregular oval particles, then plate type particles, with an increasing milling time. Because of the HCP structure, deformation occurs due to the existence of the easily breakable C-axis perpendicular to the base, which results in producing plate-type powders. An increase in ball size and the impact energy of the magnesium powder maximizes the effect of refinement. Furthermore, it is possible to improve the apparent density and fluidity according to the smoothness of the surface of the initial powder.

The n-Type thermoelectric compounds of Bi₂Te_(2.75)Se_(0.15) doped with 0.1 wt% SbI₃ were fabricated by gas atomization process and extruded under ratio of 16:1 and 28:1 at 450℃. The effect of extrusion ratio on the microstructures and thermoelectric properties were investigated by a combination of microscopy, XRD and thermoelectric properties. Grains of extruded bars are smaller than those of heated powder at extrusion temperature (450℃) due to the dynamic recrystallization but with increasing the amount of plastic deformation, grains of specimen extruded with 28:1 were slightly coarse. The compressive strength of hot extruded bar under 28:1 is 160 MPa and with decreasing the extrusion ratio to 16:1, the value is 250 MPa. The Seebeck coefficient a and electrical resistivity p were decreased with increasing ratio, while thermal conductivity x was increased. this results from decrease of carrier scattering and increase of carrier mobility. Extruded bar under ratio of 16:1 shows the higher value of figure of merit (Z=2.50x10^(-3)/K) than that of 28:1 (Z=2.07x10^(-3)/K). (Received June 24, 2004)
