        대학생의 영어캠프 보조교사 경험에 관한 연구 : 역량, 영어능력, 직무와의 연관성을 중심으로

        Many immersion programs have been established and managed throughout Korea in recent years in schools, English villages and camps. Research on the effects of various programs has been reported with focus on the program types or the benefits and learning outcomes for the participants. The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of participation at English camp as a teaching assistant by comparing some factors such as competence, English abilities, and connection to current studies/career before and after camp experience. The results show that all 17 competence rates rose with 'crisis management' showing prominent change. Also, the camp experience provides opportunity for improving English Test scores, conversational skills, teaching skills, and mostly language confidence. Lastly, the camp helped in setting career goals and was helpful in the preparation process of job seeking. Most of the subjects, the teaching assistants at camp, replied that the impact of camp experience is useful in current studies/career. In conclusion, the experience as camp teaching assistant is valuable in many aspects.

        영어 전공자들의 진로교육 강화를 위한 현장실습과정 도입 및 효과에 대한 사례연구

        현장실습은 대학에서 배운 이론적인 내용을 산업 현장에서 직접 적용해 볼 수 있는 중요한 수단이나 인문학이나 어문계열 전공자들에게는 기회가 많지 않다. 본 연구의 목적은 국내의 4년제 대학의 영어 전공자들의 진로교육 강화를 위한 현장실습 도입과 정과 그 효과를 알아보는 것이다. 해당 대학 영어영문학과에서는 2015년부터 교육과정의 변화를 기하고 유관기관과의 협약을 통해 현장실습 과정을 도입한 이후부터 2018년 까지 4년간의 자료수집 및 분석 결과 파견된 현장실습생은 총 93명이며 그들 중 현재 재학생을 제외한 졸업생 64명 중 52명이 성공적으로 취업을 했기에 취업률은 81.3%로 나타났다. 현장실습 도입 후 해당 학과의 취업률이 대체적으로 증가하였는데 현장실습 을 다녀온 졸업생의 취업률이 학과의 취업률보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 현장 실습에 참여한 학생들을 대상으로 2017년 그리고 2018년에 설문조사를 실시한 결과 현장실습에 대한 전반적인 만족도는 4.25점으로 나타났다. 현장실습을 통해 본인에게 맞는 직무를 파악하게 되고 본인의 역량을 파악하였고 남은 대학 재학 기간 동안 실제 졸업 후 취업을 위한 구체적 준비 방법을 알게 되었다고 주관식 문항을 통해 답하였으며 실제 취업 후 행동요령이나 마음가짐에 대한 용기와 자신감을 얻었다고 하였다. On-the-job training program(Internship) is an effective way for students to apply what they have learned in classrooms in the actual working field. In Korea, internship is mainly run for engineering, education, or nursing majors. It is rarely offered to students in the liberal arts including language majors. This study aims to report the process of curriculum change in the Department English Language and Literature at a university in Korea. With the cooperation of related companies and application of on-the-job training program as a 2 credit course, English majors have participated as interns in various companies for 4 weeks. The findings of the study is that the internship program is helpful for English majors in actually finding jobs after they graduate. It was found that 81.3% of graduates with internship experience got jobs which is a higher percentage compared to the other graduates. Also, survey results indicate that the students that have experienced internship has a better understanding of themselves career wise and know what to prepare for their future job as well as gaining confidence for the work. The results of this study provide implications for providing internship/on-the-job training programs for similar language-based majors or majors in the College of Humanities as a means of career education.

        A Study on English Language Learning Strategy Use by University Students in Korea

        This study examines language learning strategy use among students at a university in Korea using a new questionnaire to fit the EFL setting. A questionnaire was formed and administered to 2560 students concerning strategy use and English language selfevaluation. The data about the students’ proficiency of English were also collected. The relationship between strategy use and proficiency among Korean university students was discussed as well as learners’ self-evaluation of their English ability and strategy use. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to the questionnaire responses. Students’proficiency was measured in three ways: TOEIC scores, PEC (course) grades and selfevaluation rating. Results of the TOEIC score analysis showed the high-level subjects used strategies more than the intermediate ones, who used strategies more than the low band subjects. One exception was the “passive/avoidance” strategies, which the low band subjects used the most. PEC grade analysis showed those with higher grades used more active strategies while those with lower grades used more passive strategies. Selfevaluation analysis concluded that the high band used the first four strategy types more than the intermediate band, which used the strategies more than the low band. Further results and implications are discussed at the conclusion of the paper.

        대학생 집중 토익 프로그램의 효과 및 참가자의 성적 향상 요인 분석 사례 연구

        This study aims to find out the effects of an intensive program for college students with a focus on TOEIC score improvement. During the three-week program, 120 students received 76 hours of TOEIC instruction, ten vocabulary tests, daily group study sessions and self-study time, and took two TOEIC mock tests and an official TOEIC test on the same month the program ended. Findings were that 140 points on average rose after the program and the difference was statistically significant. Throughout the program the attendance rate was 94.6% and the regression analysis undertaken to find out the relationship between attendance and percentage increase in TOEIC score proved statistically significant. Other variables such as their student year, gender, the college they attend, and GPA scores were looked into. It is estimated that for similar intensive programs, applicants with better GPAs and the students that have TOEIC scores between 300 and 500 are better candidates. Furthermore, for a successful program, strict attendance policies should be emphasized and daily vocabulary tests are to be given in the morning before classes. Also, various motivational awards should be provided for its success.

        지방사립대 영어영문학과 재학생들의 토익 성적에 미치는 영향요인에 대한 사례 연구

        In Korea, the TOEIC test is commonly used in the application for seeking jobs. Therefore, for university students, especially those who major in English, obtaining a high TOEIC score is a huge goal. The purpose of this study was to find out the influencing factors on the TOEIC scores for English majors at a university in Chungnam Province, Korea. A total of 99 students participated in this study. Data were collected by administering a questionnaire with 35 items. The research findings are as follows. More students take the official TOEIC test as their grades get higher and their scores rise significantly. More female students take the test and their scores were higher than male students. Also, the longer the preparation period the higher the score got. The influencing factors between the top 25% and the bottom 25% of the students were the number of tests taken and their goal scores. According to regression analysis, it is indicated that the number of times the students take the test is the predicting factor for the students’ TOEIC scores. Based on the findings, it can be implied that motivation is important in TOEIC and different methods and strategies should be taught and used depending on the students’ TOEIC scores.

        영어영문학 전공자들의 토익에 대한 인식 및 태도에 관한 사례 연구

        The purpose of this study is to find out English major students` perceptions and attitudes towards the TOEIC. A questionnaire with items to measure the attitudinal factors was administered to 99 students majoring in English at a university in Korea. The findings are as follows: Freshmen and sophomores had more positive perceptions towards TOEIC as a means to enhance/measure English than juniors and seniors. The English majors, regardless of their academic years, consider TOEIC as a societal need, agreeing that the test is necessary for getting decent jobs. They also thought that test-taking skills and pattern-practice based on TOEIC question types help them get higher scores. However, their actual TOEIC scores had no correlation with their perceptions on the test. (Hoseo University)

        국내 기숙형 대학 : 국제기숙사 프로그램 도입에 관한 사례연구

        This study investigates the initiation and operation of an International Residential College program at a university in Korea that aimed to enhance the students’ English language skills and to promote global awareness. The program is introduced and the participating students’ satisfaction was measured for each sub-program. The program consisted of an ‘English conversation’ course as curricular and three evening classes, cultural events, and free talking sessions as extra- currular activities. The participants were 35 sophomores. Those that resided in the dormitory had a foreigner roommate. The results of the students survey show that English conversation course satisfaction was 4.49; high due to the intensity of meeting 4 days a week throughout the semester in a small size class. The satisfaction rate for extra-curricular classes held in the evenings in the dormitory ranged from 4.17 to 4.4 proving that the particpants were overall content. The high satisfaction rate 4.35 shows that students were happy with their roommates. Also, the results of a needs analysis for future program are given. It is hoped that similar programs may be implemented to help university students gain cultural and linguistic competence without going overseas.
