Notwithstanding recent advances in the field of treatment of rheumatic diseases, patients still have a significant interest in complementary and alternative medicine for various reasons. The purpose of this review is to investigate the effect of certain dietary components or folk medicines on the pathogenesis or outcome of rheumatic diseases. The data used in the study were mainly selected from the references searched by MEDLINE. Among the variety of dietary components and folk medicines investigated, omega-3 fatty acid, alcohol, and vitamin D showed negative correlation with the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Specifically, omega- 3 fatty acids appeared to be somewhat helpful for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although some of the items showed a positive effect through this study, it failed to establish definitive evidence for the overall effect of diet and folk medicines in rheumatic diseases. In the future, further understanding of mechanisms and clinical utility should be acquired through numerous systematic and scientific research studies. (J Rheum Dis 2015;22:10-18)

Objective: To investigate the expression of toll-like receptor (TLR)-2, 4 and 9 in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). Methods: The expression of TLR-2, 4 and 9 was measured by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemical stain (IHS) from muscle tissues in patients with IIMs and controls. Results: The expression levels of TLR-2, 4 and 9 in IIMs were significantly higher than controls. TLR-2, 4 and 9 were mainly expressed on sarcolemma of muscle fibers, perimysial vascular endothelium and infiltrating inflammatory cells in dermatomyositis, whereas, they were mainly expressed on sarcolemma of muscle fibers, destructed muscle fibers, and enodmysial infiltrating inflammatory cells in polymyositis. Conclusion: TLR-2, 4 and 9 were highly expressed in muscle tissue of IIMs. These results suggest that TLR-2, 4 and 9 play a role in pathogenesis of IIMs.

Since the end of 2019, due to the government"s strict emission regulation policies on conventional CCPPs (Combined Cycle Power Plants) burning natural gas as fuel at gas turbines and the environmental responsibilities required for stake-holders living around power plants, many plants have added SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology based De-NOx systems to reduce NOx emissions. However, the flue GRF (Gas Recirculation Fan) consuming the large electrical energy among equipments of De-NOx system in CCPPs interferes with adjacent equipments during its starting up because it installed on the insufficient parasitic power supply bus without sound considerations of capacity and protection coordination. This study introduces how to stabilize the electric power source system when starting up and to save the parasitic power consumption during normal operating period after starting up with VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) inverter.

In Korea, since the beginning of the 1990s, there has been a surge in the construction of high-efficiency coal-fired once-through boilers for 500 MW standard thermal power plants rather than drum (D/M) type steam generators. Furthermore, Old D/M type boilers have been retired without life extensions, and the capacity factor of remaining coal-fired power plants has been lowered owing to a government emission regulation policy on coal-fired power plants to reduce particulate matter since 2019. Recently, several issues with control systems of D/M type steam generators have been reported, including weekly start-up and shut-down and large-rapid load swings rather than constant operating patterns. The D/M level control system is one of the most important control systems in power plants, as it is directly influenced by the performance of the feedwater (FW) flow control system in terms of pump speed, flow control valve opening, and load runback controls, all of which affect FW flow and D/M level status. This study demonstrates how to reduce the parasitic power consumption during normal operating and regulate the steam generator level during runback operation by incorporating differential pressure control logic for flow compensation.
