Korean-speaking L2 Learners’ Comprehension of Sentences Containing Numerically Quantified NPs and Negation in English

        곽혜영 현대영어교육학회 2014 현대영어교육 Vol.15 No.3

This study investigates Korean-speaking second language learners’ comprehension of scopally ambiguous sentences in English that contain numerically quantified object NPs and negation (e.g., Tom didn’t cut down two apple trees). Using a written Truth Value Judgment Task, the study examines how the learners’ interpretive preferences in English compare to those of their native language and whether there are any differences in interpretive preferences across proficiency levels. Seventy native Korean-speaking learners of English, divided into low and high proficiency groups, and twelve English native speakers participated in the study. The participants’ responses in the Truth Value Judgment Task were analyzed in terms of the acceptance of specific or non-specific interpretations of the target sentences. The learners tended to prefer the specific interpretation to the non-specific interpretation, in contrast to the English native speakers, who did not show a clear preference. The learners’ preference in English was similar to their preference in Korean. The low and high proficiency learner groups showed no difference in their interpretive preferences. The learners’ interpretive preferences in English are discussed in the framework of the processor-based approach to scope interpretation proposed by O’Grady (2005, 2008, 2013) and O’Grady, M. Lee and H. Y. Kwak (2009), which highlights the importance of processing considerations in scope interpretation.

An analysis of data collection tasks used in studies on scope ambiguity in English involving universal quantifiers and negation

곽혜영 범태평양 응용언어학회 2022 Journal of Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Ling Vol.26 No.1

This study examines types and characteristics of data collection tasks used in studies on scope ambiguity in English involving a universally quantified noun phrase and negation, and investigates any differences in comprehension patterns across studies using different tasks. Since Musolino’s seminal 1998 study using a truth value judgment task, several other studies on English scope ambiguity have used the same task type or variations on it, while others have tested different tasks. Through a keyword search of relevant databases, the present study found a total of 13 studies dealing with the topic of universal quantification and negation in English published since 1998. Based on tasks’ key characteristics and how they were conducted, seven different basic task types were identified. A comparison of the results of the studies found a difference in the overall comprehension patterns of English native speakers for sentences containing a universally quantified noun phrase in subject position between the truth value judgment task with one type of context story and the other tasks. The results are discussed in terms of their methodological implications, and some suggestions for further research from methodological perspectives are provided.

Korean-speaking Children’s Acquisition of Interpretations of Scopally Ambiguous Sentences: Numeral Quantifiers and Negation

        곽혜영 한국응용언어학회 2012 응용 언어학 Vol.28 No.1

This study investigates Korean-speaking four-and five-year-old children’s and adults’ interpretations of scopally ambiguous sentences containing a postnominal numeral quantifier and short-form negation in Korean by conducting two experiments. Experiment 1 investigated interpretive preferences for sentences containing short-form negation an and numerically quantified noun phrases (NPs) in object position. Both Korean-speaking children and adults were found to display a preference for the specific interpretation while children accepted the non-specific interpretation far less frequently than did adults. Experiment 2 explored the role of certain contextual factors in children’s access to the non-specific interpretation. It was found that when a target sentence is preceded by an affirmative sentence carrying contrastive information, children, like adults, could accept the non-specific interpretation without difficulty. The findings are discussed in the framework of O’Grady’s (2008) processor-based emergentist approach that highlights the role of processing factors.

한국어 전칭양화사-부정어 구문의 중의성 해석에 나타나는 작용역 선호 양상

        곽혜영,이미선 한국언어학회 2010 언어 Vol.35 No.3

Kwak, Hye-Young & Miseon Lee. 2010. Interpretive Preferences in L1 Korean Universal Quantifier-negation Patterns. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 35-3, 531-542. It is well known that a sentence containing both a negative and a quantifier, such as Mary didn't eat all the cookies is ambiguous: if all has scope over not, the sentence has the full set interpretation (i.e., Mary didn't eat any cookies.) while it has the partitioned set interpretation (i.e., Mary ate some of the cookies.) if not has wide scope. Interestingly, it has been reported that children strongly prefer one of the two interpretations across languages. In this study, we investigate Korean L1 children's and adults' preferences in interpreting Korean <motun ‘all/every’ + Object NP + an ‘not’> sentences, and account for those interpretive preferences by applying the processor-based emergentist account proposed by O'Grady (2005, 2008), which claims that the scope preference can be explained by the processor's role to minimize the processing load. 곽혜영,유재우,오노미찌 켄지 대한건축학회 2007 대한건축학회논문집 Vol.23 No.5

This study is architecturally considered and compared about how to adapt and confront to climatic environment of Jeju Island and Okinawa on vernacular house formation. As Jeju Island and Okinawa are regions where oceanic climate is clear, the climatic setting is a primary factor in a form of residence. Therefore, the equipment for overcoming all difficulties in climate environment is supposed to be prepared more thoroughly than any other regions. Moreover, Jeju Island and Okinawa are backward in the cultural contact with the mainland of each country because of the geographical characteristic called frontier islands which are separated with their mainlands. For the reasons, naturally bad condition is supposed to be a decisive influence on architectural form. The purpose of this study is seek to the architectural similarity and identical characteristics of the influenced on the wind and rain factors on the vernacular houses in Jeju and Okinawa.

왕수인의 良知 개념을 통한 학습자 주도성(Student Agency)의 재개념화

곽혜영 한국양명학회 2024 陽明學 Vol.- No.75

The concept of student agency, emphasized in the ‘OECD Education 2030 Project,’ is directly reflected in the draft of the 2022 General Curriculum for Elementary and Secondary Schools and serves as a core concept and design principle of the 2022 Revised Curriculum. However, criticisms have been raised that there has not been sufficient in-depth review or reflection on the concept of student agency by the OECD, which is deeply involved in the current curriculum revision, as highlighted by various scholars. The study analyzes the concept of student agency from the OECD and Wang Shou Ren’s concept of Yang Jee, examining the similarities and differences between the two concepts. In addition, the aim is to complement and re-conceptualize the criticisms of the OECD’s student agency through Wang Shou Ren’s concept of Yang Jee. To re-conceptualize student agency, the commonalities of subjectivity, autonomy, reflectiveness, and participation between the OECD’s student agency and Wang Shou Ren’s concept of Yang Jee are emphasized. Additionally, the criticisms of the OECD’s concept of student agency, such as its atomistic view of the self and rationalistic aspects, are addressed by complementing them with Wang Shou Ren’s relational view of the self and his rational-emotional moral sensibility. Re-conceptualized student agency is defined as the student, as a relational being, exercising rational and emotional moral sensibility to autonomously and practically participate in the world for the happiness of all, while cultivating a sense of responsibility through moral reflection on the relationship between the self and the world.

한국인 대학생 영어 학습자의 요약문에 나타난 패러프레이즈 사용에 관한 연구

        곽혜영 언어과학회 2018 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.85

This study investigated the frequency of paraphrasing strategies used by Korean university students in English summary writing along with the quality of those paraphrases. Twenty summaries on an expository text were collected and attempted paraphrases identified. The paraphrases were analyzed according to six types of paraphrasing strategies and their qualities examined by focusing on semantic, lexical, and syntactic aspects. Results showed that the lexical/syntactic combinatory strategy was used most frequently and the syntactic modification strategy the least frequently. Some paraphrases showed semantic incompleteness while others were characterized by inappropriate lexical choices resulting from the lexical modification strategy employed. Sentence structures of the paraphrases were entirely or partially different from the source sentences. The study provides pedagogical implications for improving students’ paraphrasing skills in academic writing. .

A Study of Korean Speakers’ Interpretive Patterns for Korean Sentences Containing the Universal Quantifier motun and Long-Form Negation with the Particle –nun

곽혜영 고려대학교세종캠퍼스 한국학연구소 2017 한국학연구 Vol.60 No.-

This study explores scope ambiguity in Korean by investigating adults’ interpretation and on-line processing of sentences containing universally quantified direct object NPs and long-form negation with the particle –nun. The results of a self-paced reading and truth-value judgment task show that some participants preferred the not>all interpretation while others preferred the all>not interpretation. The results also suggest that the assignment of the less preferred interpretation may have caused more processing difficulty than that of the preferred interpretation. Processing difficulty is discussed according to O’Grady’s (2005, 2013, 2015) processing-based approach.

영어 초점사 only의 중의성에 대한 한국인 영어 학습자의 이해 선호도에 관한 연구

        곽혜영,김소영 현대영어교육학회 2019 현대영어교육 Vol.20 No.3

This study examines Korean EFL learners’ interpretations of ambiguous focuses in sentences with preverbal only (e.g., Max only carries the stones). Ambiguous sentences containing preverbal only are known to evoke three possible meanings depending on which of the following its scope is assigned to: a noun phrase (NP) as a direct object, a verb (V) or a verb phrase (VP). To investigate which default meaning is preferred in the comprehension of preverbal only, forty four Korean EFL learners and ten native English speakers participated in the study using a sentence completion task which differed from a picture-based Truth-value Judgment Task used in previous studies. Participants were asked to read a background story followed by a sentence with preverbal only and then fill in the blank in a following sentence with NP, V or VP contrast information depending on their preferred interpretation. As a result, Korean EFL learners as well as native English speakers were found to prefer the NP-focused interpretation as the default meaning. These results are discussed in relation to methodological issues and sentence processing principles.
