Purpose: To report the corneal superficial punctate keratoepitheliopathy in 2 patients taking the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors, erlotinib and lapatinib, respectively. Case summary: Case 1, who received erlotinib, showed trichomegaly without touching the cornea and diffuse punctate keratoepitheliopathy. Corneal epitheliopathy and the corresponding symptoms resolved after discontinuation of the drug then recurred with reapplication. Case 2 presented diffuse corneal punctate epithelial erosions that developed without any cilia involvement after the patient was administered lapatinib. The visual acuity of both patients was not severely diminished and keratoepitheliopathy was mostly resolved with the treatment of preservative-free artificial tears and autologous serum eye drops. Conclusions: Erlotinib and lapatinib are both likely to cause visually tolerable corneal punctate keratoepitheliopathy which can be resolved with appropriate topical treatment. Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes and prognostic factors of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in Korean patients with juvenile open-angle glaucoma (JOAG). Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 29 eyes with JOAG who had undergone trabeculectomy between January 2004 and January 2013. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and postoperative complications were monitored at 1 day preoperatively, at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months postoperatively, and at final follow-up after postoperative 18 months. Surgical success was defined as a final IOP of <21 mm Hg or <80% of preoperative IOP, regardless of the use of anti-glaucoma medication. Prognostic factors for surgical success or failure were analyzed by the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Mean (± standard deviation) age at trabeculectomy was 24.6 (± 8.9) years, and mean follow-up period was 24.3 (± 20.8) months. The overall success rate was 82.8% at final follow-up. The Kaplan-Meier cumulative probabilities of surgical success were 100% at 1 year, 87.4% at 2 years, and 78.7% at 3 years postoperatively. The Cox proportional hazards model failed to determine any significant factors that were associated with surgical failure. The three most frequent postoperative complications were immediately postoperative hypotony (n = 19, 65.5%), hypotony maculopathy (n = 8, 27.6%), and encapsulated bleb (n = 8, 27.6%), most of which were resolved after a minor procedure or observation. Two of 8 eyes with encapsulated bleb required a second surgery. There were no vision-threatening severe complications. Conclusions: Trabeculectomy with MMC may be an effective treatment in Korean JOAG patients. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2014;55(2):252-260

The analysis of proteolytic activity is essential for understanding the biological functions of living systems as well as for developing therapeutics and diagnosis. We eveloped a chip-based assay system for proteases that measures the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dots (QD) and fluorophore-labeled peptides. In this system, while the photoluminescence (PL) of donor QD immobilized on a surface was quenched due to the presence of an energy acceptor (fluorophore) in close proximity, the protease activity caused modulation in the efficiency of the energy transfer between the acceptor and donor, thus enabling the highly sensitive assay. Unlike solution-based analyses, our chip-based format enables a more reliable analysis with no aggregation of QD, and it is able to function using a much smaller reaction volume. The system presented here will be useful for the detection of various proteases with high selectivity and nsitivity in a high-throughput manner.
Leucine-Rich Repeat Receptor-Like Proteins in Plants: Structure, Function, and Signaling

Leucine-rich repeat receptor-like proteins (LRR-RLPs) and LRR receptor-like kinases (LRR-RLKs) are transmembrane receptors that act as critical sensors for regulating a wide variety of developmental and defense-related processes. LRR-RLPs, like LRR-RLKs, form receptor complexes with the co-receptor BAK1 on the plasma membrane to transmit ligand perception signals to intracellular signaling components. However, in contrast to LRR-RLKs, LRR-RLPs lack a cytoplasmic kinase domain and associate with the adaptor protein SUPPRESSOR OF BIR1-1 (SOBIR1) to activate downstream signal transduction. In this review, we discuss the structure of LRR-RLPs, their functions in plant immunity and development, and their ligand molecules. We also summarize the current understanding of LRR-RLP-mediated signaling mechanisms.
