To detect the water stress early before the appearance of morphological stress symptoms, the morphological changes, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance of leaves were analyzed in Arabidopsis thaliana and Glycine max growing in water stress conditions. While the morphological changes including wilting, stem thinning and leaf rolling appeared clearly after 5 days exposure to drought, the increase of chlorophyll content and the decrease of chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance at 450-700 nm wavelength of leaves appeared after 3 days exposed to drought. The results obtained in this study indicate that drought enhances local chlorophyll content temporarily and reduces chlorophyll fluorescence and spectral reflectance early before the appearance of morphological changes. The light-related physiological parameters used in this experiment might tell us when the plants feel thirsty and could be used for us to decide when the water supply is not too late to minimize plant damage and to reduce yield loss. 외형적인 증상이 나타나기 전에 수분 스트레스의 조기 탐지가 가능한지를 알아보기 위해 가뭄에 노출하여 성장시킨 Arabidopsis thaliana와 Glycine max의 형태적 변화, 엽록소 농도, 엽록소 형광 및 반사율을 분석해 보았다. 시듦, 줄기 가늘어짐 및 잎 말림을 포함하는 형태적 변화가 가뭄 노출 5일 째부터 일어나는 반면 잎의 국부적인 엽록소 농도 증가와 엽록소 형광 및 500~600nm 영역에서의 반사율 저하는 가뭄 노출 2일째부터 나타났다. 본 실험 결과는 수분 스트레스가 형태적인 증상들이 나타나기 전에 일시적으로 엽록소 농도를 증가시키며 엽록소 형광과 반사율은 감소시킴을 보여준다. 본 실험에서 사용된 빛과 관련된 생리적 지표들은 식물이 물 부족을 언제 느끼며, 우리가 언제 물을 줘야 식물의 피해를 최소화하여 생산성 감소를 줄일 수 있는지를 알려줄 것이다.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of body balance according to insole height and to provide basic information about body balance by insole height. Method : We examed 40 university students who had healthy body without balance impairment. Plantar pressure was measured by EMED system and the measurement of MTD balance used the MTD-balance master in static stance posture. Both of equipments are various measurement method. We measured plantar pressure and MTD balance each three different height insole(0cm, 3cm, 7cm) and each trial was 30 second in duration. Result : The results were as follows : 1) It showed significantly differences between bare foot and height insole. The anterior plantar pressure with 3cm or 7cm insole were more higher than bare foot(P<.05). 2) There were no significantly differences between barefoot and height insole with MTD-balance master(P<.05). Conclusion : In conclusion, the measurement of MTD balance showed right and left balance ability didn't change by insole height, but plantar pressure was moved on anterior side of foot so we could know insole's height cause the effect to anterior and posterior balance ability.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of umbelliferone in chronic alcohol-fed rats

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inflammation is associated with various types of acute and chronic alcohol liver diseases. In this study, we examined whether umbelliferone (7-hydroxycoumarin, UF) ameliorates chronic alcohol-induced liver damage by modulating inflammatory response and the antioxidant system. METHODS: Rats were fed a Liber-Decarli liquid diet containing 5% alcohol with or without UF (0.05 g/L) for 8 weeks, while normal rats received an isocaloric carbohydrate liquid diet. RESULTS: Chronic alcohol intake significantly increased serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 levels and decreased interleukin 10 level; however, UF supplementation reversed the cytokines related to liver damage. UF significantly suppressed hepatic lipopolysaccharide binding protein, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor kappa B, and TNF-α gene expression increases in response to chronic alcohol intake. Masson"s trichrome staining revealed that UF improved mild hepatic fibrosis caused by alcohol, and UF also significantly increased the mRNA expressions and activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in liver, and thus, decreased lipid peroxide and mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide levels. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that UF protects against alcohol-induced liver damage by inhibiting the TLR4 signaling pathway and activating the antioxidant system.

Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is characterized by ataxia, areflexia, and ophthalmoparesis. Here we present a case of MFS mimicking Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) during pregnancy. A 31-year-old woman at 8 weeks of gestation presented with diplopia and ataxia after experiencing nausea and vomiting for several weeks. We initiated thiamine based on a suspicion of WE, which produced no clear effects. However, her symptoms began to improve following intravenous immunoglobulin treatment, and other findings finally lead to a diagnosis of MFS. Because ataxia and ophthalmoparesis can be misdiagnosed as WE during pregnancy, clinicians should consider MFS in the differential diagnosis.
