Purpose; Ga-67 scintigraphy has been used for the evaluation of tumors, especially lymphoma. Recently, Tl-201 and Tc-99m MIBI were also used to tumor imaging. Tl-201 and Tc-99m MIBI had better physiologic characteristics than Ga-67, so we studied 32 biopsy proven lymphoma patients (male 24, female 8, mean age 46 years) with Ga-67, Tl-201 or Tc-99m MIBI and compared the scan findings. Materials and Methods: Twenty-three of 32 patients were injected 74-111 MBq (2-3 mCi) of Tl-201, before chemotherapy and imaged with dual-headed SPECT (Prism 2000, Picker, USA) at 30 minutes after injection. Delayed images were obtained after 3 hr in 8 patients. Twenty seven of 32 patients were injected 740 MBq (20 mCi) of Tc-99m MIBI and imaged at 30 minutes after injection. 111-185 MBq (3-5 mCi) of Ga-67 was injected in 12 patients and imaged at 48 and 72 hours after injection. Twenty eight patients were diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and others were Hodgkin's lymphoma. Results: Twenty patients were positive on Tl-201 scan and 3 patients showed negative findings. One of these 3 patients, Tc-99m MIBI and Ga-67 scan were positive. Twenty two patients were positive on Tc-99m MIBI scan and 5 patients showed negative findings. One of these 5 patients, Tl-201 was positive and 2 were positive on Ga-67 scan. Ten of 12 patients showed positive findings on Ga-67 scan. The sensitivity of these agents were 83.3%, 87.0% and 81.5% for Ga-67, Tl-201 and Tc-99m MIBI, respectively. The sensitivity was highest in Tl-201 scan, but there were no significant differences among three tests. In this study, there was no significant difference of uptake ratios between early and delayed images of Tl-201. Conclusion: Scintigraphy with Tl-201 and Tc-99m MIBI in lymphoma patients have similar sensitivity with Ga-67.

Male ICR mice ranging from 15g to 20g were given a single ECS(1-ECS : 13mA, 1sec,100cps) daily or on alternate days for 10 days(5-ECS). The contents of monoamine metabolites in the hypothalamus and the brain stem(BS) were measured 10, 30. and 60 min after ECS-administration as well as before ECS. Contents of monoamine metabolites in the HT and the BS, such as 5-HIAA, MHPG, DOPAC and HVA increased rapidly after 1-ECS or 5ECS and then came down to the pre-ECS values. However, their increases induced by 5-ECS were significantly smaller than those by 1-ECS except the tedious increase of the hypothalamic HAV content. 5-HIAA and MHPG in the HT decrease significantly by the 4the administration of ECS in the course of the 5-ECS treatment. These results suggest that the repeated treatment of ECS may decrease the turnover rates of serotonin and noradrenaline in the hypothalamus.

The polyamines have been postulated to be essential in most processes associated with both hypertrophy and hyperplasia. The effects of estrogen on uterine contractility vary with animal species, and most reports have shown that in vitro contractility of rat uterus is decreased after estrogen treatment, but estrogen increases polyamine contents in castrated rat uterus. This study was carried out to investigate whether the regulation of polyamine metabolism may be instrumental in the contractile response of castrated nonpregnant uterus of female SD rats to electrical field stimulation (40 V, 100 μsec : EFS). Estradiol (E2) increased uterine contents of putrescine (PT), spermidine (SPD), and spermine (SPM). These E2 effects were inhibited by tamoxifen or DFMO, but E2-incuced increase of uterine SPM content was enhanced by aminoguanidine. E2 decreased the amplitude of force developed in the rhythmic spontaneous contraction of rat uterus, but it exaggerated the increase of uterine contraction force in response to EFS. The E2-dependent exaggeration was inhibited by tamoxifen, DFMO, or indomethacin, but was significantly enhanced by aminoguanidine. The synergism between E2 and aminoguanidine on uterine contractility was little affected by indomethacin. These results suggest that E2-dependent increase of uterine contractility may be ascribed partly to increase of uterus polyamines.
Beta-amyloid imaging in dementia

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with extracellular plaques, composed of amyloid-beta ($A{\beta}$), in the brain. Although the precise mechanism underlying the neurotoxicity of $A{\beta}$ has not been established, $A{\beta}$ accumulation is the primary event in a cascade of events that lead to neurofibrillary degeneration and dementia. In particular, the $A{\beta}$ burden, as assessed by neuroimaging, has proved to be an excellent predictive biomarker. Positron emission tomography, using ligands such as $^{11}C$-labeled Pittsburgh Compound B or $^{18}F$-labeled tracers, such as $^{18}F$-florbetaben, $^{18}F$-florbetapir, and $^{18}F$-flutemetamol, which bind to $A{\beta}$ deposits in the brain, has been a valuable technique for visualizing and quantifying the deposition of $A{\beta}$ throughout the brain in living subjects. $A{\beta}$ imaging has very high sensitivity for detecting AD pathology. In addition, it can predict the progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD, and contribute to the development of disease-specific therapies.

Background/Aims: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Korea exhibits significant geographic variation, with it being higher in Busan and Jeonam than in other areas. The reason for this intranational geographic difference was investigated in this study by conducting a comparative analysis of the risk factors related to HCV infection among three geographic areas: the capital (Seoul), Busan, and the province of Jeolla. Methods: In total, 990 patients with chronic HCV infection were prospectively enrolled at 5 university hospitals located in Seoul (n=374), Busan (n=264), and Jeolla (n=352). A standardized questionnaire survey on the risk factors for HCV infection was administered to these three groups of patients, and a comparative analysis of the findings was performed. Results: The analysis revealed significant regional differences in exposure to the risk factors of HCV infection. By comparison with patients in Seoul as a control group in the multivariate analysis, patients in Busan had significantly more experience of invasive medical procedures, acupuncture, cosmetic procedures, and multiple sex partners. In contrast, patients in Jeolla were significantly older, and they had a higher prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma, a lower prevalence of multiple sex partners, and had experienced fewer invasive procedures. Conclusions: There was a significant geographic difference in the exposure to potential risk factors of HCV infection between patients from the three studied regions. This may explain the regional variation of the prevalence of HCV infection in Korea, and should be taken into account when planning strategies for the prevention and management of HCV infection.
