N/A The polypeptide hormones of the somatemedin (SM) family have been proposed to promote growth both in pre and postnatally. The two main farm of samatomedin in serum of adults are insulin-like growth factor 1, also termed SMC and IGF-II. IGF-I activity raises in the late pegnancy, which suggest a potential effect on fetal development. The aim of the present study was to determine maternal IGF-I and placenta IGF-I levels in 12 womens with late pregnancy end evaluate the relationship of these level to the growth percentile of their infant. The result were as follow: 1) plasma levels of IGF-I/SMC in late pregnancy were signficantly higher than age mached control. (337±127ng/ml VS 232±15ng/ml, p<0.005). 2) The maternal levels of IGF-I/SMC (337±127ng/ml) were significantly greater than those in the paired newborn cord artery (84±40ng/ml) or cord vein (100±46ng/ml). 3) The maternal levels of IGF-I/SMC were not correlated with cord vein IGF-I/SMC r=18 and cord artery IGF-I/SMC r=0.16 (p>0.05). 4) The cord vein IGF-I/SMC levels were positively correlated with cord artery IGF-I/SMC levels r=0.76 (p<0.005). 5) There was an increase in the percentile of birth weight and length with increasing maternal serum 1GF-1/SMC levels. The corresponding correlation coefficients in weight and length percentile with maternal serum IGF-l/SMC were 0.44 (p<0.005) and 0.65 (p<0.005), respectively. These result suggest that increased IGF-I/SMC levels in late pregnancy may causally be related to intrauterine fetal growth.

N/A We studied the effect of blood sugar control in patients with NIDDM on the IGF-I level and nitrogen balance as a metabolic index. The result as follows 1) There was no difference in IGF-I level between patients with NIDDM and normal control group. (222±60ng/ml vs 221±49ng/ml, p>0.1) 2) There was a statistically significant increment in IGF-I level in the NIDDM patients who improved to positive nitrogen balance from negative nitrogen balance. (217±55ng/ml vs 285±44ng/ml, p<0.05) 3) IGF-I level was not increased in patients who did not improve to positive nitrogen balance after suger control and the patient who was prositive nitrogen blance initially. (231±63ng/m1 vs 190±52ng/ml, p>0.1) 4) IGF-I level was not increased in spite of improved nitrogen balance after sugar control in patients with under body weight. (221±68ng/ml vs 213±42ng/ml, p>0.1) These reult sugested that mornitoring of serum IGF-I level in NIDDM patients is useful marker which represent metabolic compensation with treatment of diabetes.

The effects of young radish (YR, yeolmu in Korean) on the induction of apoptosis were examined in AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. The young radish kimchi (YRK) were made of YR cultivated in the soil without (Control YR kimchi: C-YRK) and with 1,818 g/m3 sulfur (Sulfur YR kimchi: S-YRK), respectively. Methanol extracts from S-YRK exhibited higher inhibitory effect on the growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells in a time dependent-manner compared to C-YRK at the same concentration. 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining showed that S-YRK induced apoptosis accompanied by the increased Bax but decreased Bcl-2 in mRNA expression. Moreover, S-YRK decreased the levels of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expressions. The results suggested that S-YRK cultivated in the presence of sulfur elicited stronger anticancer activity than C-YRK in vitro. Dietary intakes of S-YRK may be beneficial to decrease the risk of cancer.

The effect of electrochemical process to treat the industrial Wastewater for removal of COD_Mn was described in this study. The tests on COD_Mn, pH and conductivity were performed. It was shown from the tests that, in regard to efficiency of COD_Mn removal, 1.5㎝ between the electrodes for electical resistance was optimally appeared. The COD_Mn concentration and conductivity of the waste water were initially decreased when the voltage charge was increased. Removal of COD_Mn was predominantly occurred with addition of NaCl and increase of retension time. The optimal amount of NaCl solution was 2,000㎎/L. The effective removal of COD_Mn was appeared when current density was increased and pH was decreased.
Expression of Cyclin D3 Transcripts in the Postmeiotic Male Germ Cells of the Mouse

D-type G1 cyclins are known to be crucial for the progression of mitotic cell cycle in mammals. Although many studies have been performed to elucidate the roles of D-type cyclins, it is largely unknown whether D-type cyclins are directly involved in the regulation of meiotic germ cell development. In the present study, we examined the expression patterns of D-type cyclins (cyclin D1 and D3) during male germ cell development by northern blot and in situ Hybridization analyses. In the adult testes, we detected a 4.2 kb cyclin D1 mRNA and two different sizes (2.3 kb and 1.8 kb) of cyclinD3 mRNAs. The short form of the cyclin D3 transcript was testis-specific. Along with the testicular development, expression of cyclin D3 mRNA was increased whereas cyclin D1 mRNA was gradually decreased. in situ hybridization study also revealed that the expression of cyclin D3 was restricted to the postmeiotic germ cells. Furthermore, the 2.3 kb transcript was highly expressed in the round spermatids and decreased in the elongated spermatids/residual bodies, while the 1.8 kb transcript was expressed in elongated spermatids/residual bodies more abundantly. Sucrose-gradient separation of polysomal RNA fractions demonstrated that some portions of the 2.3 kb transcript are translationally active, while the 1.8 kb transcript is likely to be inactive. Taken together, the present data suggest a functional importance of cyclin D3 expression in the differentiated postmeiotic male germ cells.
