1. Twenty-one cases of brain abscess treated at the Department of Neurosurgery, Seoul National University Hospital during the past 10 years from 1958 through 1967 were studied clinically. 2. Fifty-seven percents of the cases studied were under the age of 20. The ratio between male and female was 2:1. 3. The most important of the known sources of the infection was the infection of the middle ear which was responsible for 57% of total cases. Among others paranasal sinusitis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, cellulitis in face, osteomyelitis in skull, and head trauma were included. 4. Bacterial culture was performed in 12 cases. In 4 cases staphylococci were isolated; iri other 2, streptococci; and in still other 2, proteus. 5. Temporal abscess was found in 13 cases; cerebellar in 2, occipital, in. 2, parietal in 2, and frontal in 1 One case had temporal epidural abscess. 6. Headache was by far the most constant and common symptom and was found in 90%. Among .others fever, vomiting, L-A nausea were included. As sings 14 patients had stIffneek; 5, hemiparesis; 5, convul- sion; 4, hemiplegia and 2, homonymous helnianopsia. Papilledema was found in 9 cases. 7. Level of consciousness was comatous in 3, cloudy in 6, and alert in 12. 8. The mortality in this study was 28.6 % and the operative mortality 22.2 %. All comatous patients expired.

Purpose: The characteristics of hypoparathyroidism in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) after total thyroidectomy are not well established. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hypoparathyroidism and loss of parathyroid glands in patients with or without HT who underwent total thyroidectomy. Methods: Patients who underwent total thyroidectomy were divided into two groups; with HT (n=166) and without HT (n=526). Clinicopathologic characteristics were compared between the two groups. Results: The mean numbers of parathyroid glands in specimens were significantly smaller in the with HT group than in the without HT group (0.34±0.51 vs. 0.42±0.58, P=0.003). The rate of transient hypoparathyroidism was significantly higher in the with HT group than in the without HT group (51.8% vs. 34.6%, P=0.000). Serum total calcium levels in patients who experienced transient hypoparathyroidism did not differ significantly between groups (P=0.335). The incidence of transient hypoparathyroidism of patients who preserved all four parathyroid glands or sacrificed one parathyroid gland was higher in the with HT group than in the without HT group, although that of patients who sacrificed two or more parathyroid glands was similar between groups. The incidence of permanent hypoparathyroidism in the two groups did not differ (P=0.546). Conclusion: Patients with HT had a higher rate of transient hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy, particularly patients who preserved all four or three parathyroid glands. It is likely that the blood supply to the parathyroid gland might be vulnerable in patients with HT. Therefore, even though all parathyroid glands were preserved, careful monitoring of hypoparathyroidism is necessary after total thyroidectomy in patients with HT.

Carboxylated styrene-butadiene계 액상 첨가제가 칼라 보도 블록 무기 안료층의 미세구조, 기계적 특성 및 탈색 저항성에 미치는 영향에 대하여 조사하였다. 액상 첨가제를 첨가함에 따라 겉보기 기공률과 흡수율이 감소한 더 치밀한 미세구조와 균일한 안료 분포를 나타내는 무기 안료층을 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 기계적 강도 및 탈색저항성이 현저히 향상됨을 확인하였다. Effects of a carboxylated styrene-butadiene-based liquid additive on the microstructure, mechanical strength and decolorization resistance of inorganic pigment layer in the color block have been examined. More dense inorganic pigment layer characterized by lower apparent porosity, lower water absorption and uniform pigment distribution has been achieved by incorporation of a liquid additive. Also significant enhancements in the mechanical strength and decolorization resistance have been observed.
