A Study on the Status of Movie English in the EFL Classroom
박영 영상영어교육학회 2019 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.20 No.4
This paper presents a view on how to develop a way of teaching and learning English through movies. It is commonly accepted that the strong points of movies are 1) input-flood 2) practical expressions and 3) amusement. This study suspects that these points have no theoretical basis. In this paper, the terms ‘input-flood,’ ‘practical expressions,’ and ‘amusement’ will each be changed into ‘speech community,’ ‘idiomatic expressions,’ and ‘contextual priming based on a story.’ It will be shown that these three concepts are strongly theory-based. This study also criticizes the view of input-flood focused only on linguistic elements. It will be maintained that the concept of speech community includes linguistic and non-linguistic elements, such as culture, values, etc., knowledge of which leads to better communication in English. It does not seem that there is a positive relation between learning practical expressions and language development. Instead, idiomatic expressions are considered to be the main theme of Construction Grammar. It is also not for sure that amusement leads to language development. It could distract attention from learning. Rather, contextual priming will be described through story-basis. Two influential movies, i.e., Easy A and Ant-Man will be used to show the effectiveness of contextual priming.
Idiomatic Expressions and Idiomaticity in Movie English
박영 영상영어교육학회 2020 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.21 No.2
This paper has two main purposes: 1) to raise among EFL students and teachers awareness of idiomatic expressions and idiomaticity; 2) to find out what constitutes idiomatic expressions in movie scripts. Today’s researchers are fully aware that knowledge of idiomatic expressions is an important factor in elevating students’ communicative competence. In many respects, “normal ways of saying things” Langacker (2008) discusses in his book (p. 84) sets the goal in EFL classrooms. This common-sensical way of language proficiency is what all EFL students ultimately want to achieve. The concept of ‘idiomatic judgments’ will be introduced in section 2 in an effort to eliminate EFL teachers’ prejudice on idioms since their definition of idiom seems to be heavily dependent on the notion of non-compositionality. In section 3, the syntax of idioms will be reviewed. This has been vastly underrated by generative grammarians and consequently received less significance than it deserves. In section 4, an implication for EFL classrooms will be given. In order to do this, an episode of the American TV drama Lucifer (Shilati, 2019) will be used as a potential teaching material. It is expected that this class design will expand EFL students’ comprehension of idioms and help them enjoy movie English classes more.

We propose an optical-based measuring instrument of catenary system in electric railway. This system was made to utilize line scan camera as inspecting system to measure the stagger and height of overhead contact wire in railway and composed with optical type source and FPGA-based image acquisition system with PCI slot. Vision acquisition software has been used for the application to programming interface for image acquisition, display, and storage with a frequency of sampling. To check the validity of our approach for the intended application, we monitored height and stagger in the overhead wire of a high-speed catenary system in Korea. The proposed optical-based measuring instrument to measure the contact wire geometry such as the hight and stagger shows promising on-field applications for online condition motoring. We expect that a new generation of real-time instruments with demanding various conditions motoring requirement in railway can be easily integrated into optical-based measuring instrument system.
