Background: Enteroviruses are the most frequent etiologic agents of aseptic meningitis and are estimated to be the cause of 70% to 90% of viral meningitis cases. Enterovirus diagnosis can be difficult because clinical features vary according to patient immunity and age. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the real-time nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) assay compared to that of the real-time nested RT-PCR assay for enterovirus detection. Methods: This study was performed on 96 patients suspected of aseptic meningitis based on clinical features. RNA was extracted using NucliSENS EasyMAG and real-time NASBA assay was performed using NucliSENS EasyQ Enterovirus and NucliSENS EasyQ Basic 2. We also executed in-house real-time nested RT-PCR assay for RNA extracted via QIAamp Viral RNA Mini. Results: The positive rate of real-time NASBA assay was 45.8% for enterovirus detection. The positive rate of first real-time reverse transcription PCR was 22.9% and the second real-time PCR was 57.3%. The concordant rate of the real-time NASBA assay and first real-time reverse transcription PCR was 75.0%. The concordant rate of the real-time NASBA assay and second real-time PCR was 86.5%. Conclusion: The detection of enteroviruses using the real-time NASBA assay is less prone to cross-contamination and is simple, without the need for reverse transcription. We conclude that the NASBA assay is an effective method for the rapid diagnosis of aseptic meningitis. (Korean J Clin Microbiol 2010;13:53-58)

The various interpretations of Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899) have mainly concentrated on the ending of the novel -- Edna Pontellier's suicide and related issues -- because the ending engendered in traditional readers cultural shock and confusions over feminist questions as it deals with issues like women's freedom, independence, and sexual emancipation in the very late 19th century. After the publicaion of the work, The Awakening remained mired in a critical underground for more than 60 years until a Norwegian scholar called Per Seyersted reedited and republished it in 1969. This paper examines Edna Pontellier's search for her true self as it mirrors Kate Chopin's own search for her artistic beliefs and what she tries to convey in the text. The paper will interpret the ending of the novel in terms of an autobiographical perspective reflecting the author's life as a woman artist on Edna's life and death. Although Edna's whole life might not be the direct and consistent reflection of Chopin's specific biographical facts, Edna can be read as an artistic and cultural alter ego of Chopin: the woman writer who poses some serious questions on women's independence, defies restrictive and dualistic conventions, and asserts her own subjective and individual demands against the socially and culturally unfavorable environment. Therefor, Edna's final resolution -- her climactic suicide -- can be taken as a metaphorical parallel for Chopin's courageous publication of the work -- an artistic suicide amidst a public that for 60 years would neglect the novel.

Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter : Hester's Sexuality and the Puritan Power In this paper, I focus on the relation between Hester's sexual transgression (adultery) and the power of the puritan society in the 17th century presented in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850). The major topic in the paper is to examine the novel in the way that Hester's adultery implies woman's protest and subversion against phallocentric power and law which had exclusively suppressed woman's own idea, desire, and voice. In the novel, Dimmesdale, who is directly involved in "the A accident," uses his political and religious power based on language, reason, and logocentric ideology to justify and to beautify his concealment of truth of the scarlet letter. In this context, Hester's physical resistance to male-dominated world reveals that the puritan society system should be faulty and its power has to be reorganized on the basis of legal equality and inner truth between the sexes.
