Defect on the temporal area caused by, surgical ablation of a tumor or an infection should be reconstructed immediately to prevent potentially life-threatening complications such as meningitis and cerebrospinal fluid leakage. The defect on the temporal area usually presents as a typical 'cone-shape'. Successful reconstruction requires sufficient volume of well-vascularized soft tissue to cover the exposed bone and dura. From 1994 through 2003, the authors applied rectus abdominis free flap for the reconstruction of the temporal defect from 1994 through 2003. There were 10 patients with a mean age of 52.1 years. Of these 10 patients, external auditory canal cancer was present in four patients, temporal bone cancer in two, parotid gland cancer in one and three patients were reconstructed after debridement of infection(destructive chronic otitis media). All the free flaps survived, and flap-related complications did not occur. Compared to a local flap, the rectus abdominis free flap can provide sufficient volume of well-vascularized tissue to cover the large defect and can be well-tolerated during an adjuvant radiation therapy. The long and flat muscle can be easily molded to fit in to the 'cone-shape' temporal defect without dead space. It is also preferred because of the low donor site morbidity, a large skin island and an excellent vascular pedicle. Two-team approach without position change is possible. In conclusion, the authors think that rectus abdominis free flap should be considered as one of the most useful method for the reconstruction of a cone-shaped temporal defect.
Single Center Experience With Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Purpose: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been proposed for controlling peritoneal seeding metastasis in some kinds of cancers, including those of colorectal origin, but their safety and oncological benefits are subjects of debate. We present our early experience with those procedures. Methods: Data were retrospectively collected from all patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) treated using CRS and HIPEC at Yonsei Cancer Center between July 2014 and July 2015. Short-term outcomes and risk factors for postoperative complications were analyzed. Results: Twenty-three patients with PC (n = 18) and PMP (n = 5) underwent CRS and HIPEC. Median follow-up and age were 2 months and 54 years, respectively. The median peritoneal carcinomatosis index score was 15, and CC0-1 was achieved in 78.3% of all patients. The median operation time and bleeding loss were 590 minutes and 570 mL, respectively. Grade-IIIa/grade-IIIb complications occurred in 4.3% (n = 1)/26.1% (n = 6) of the patients within 30 days postoperatively, and no 30-day mortalities were reported. Factors related to postoperative complications with CRS and HIPEC were number of organ resection (P = 0.013), longer operation time (P < 0.001), and amount of blood loss (P = 0.003). All patients treated with cetuximab for recurred colorectal cancer had grade-III postoperative complication. Conclusion: Our initial experience with CRS and HIPEC presented about 30% grade-III postoperative complications. Therefore, expert surgeons need to perform those procedures with great caution in selected patients who might benefit from it.
Extraction of valuable inorganic salts from waste scrubbing liquid of de-SOx/de-NOx

According to the IMO (international maritime organization) policy, every ship entering the Baltic has to equip the gas cleaning scrubber. Although various advanced de-SOx/de-NOx devices have been proposed, recovery of waste scrubbing liquid is of critical interests in a limited space of the ship. This waste solution contains many types of salts, this work attempts to recover some valuable materials before disposal. Some typical processes including thermal evaluation, low temperature extraction method and a selective organic solvent extraction method were experimentally evaluated. It primarily aims for extraction of ammonium sulfates and nitrates. Extraction yield was found 82.7% by heating evaporation. The obtained material was analyzed in its chemical and physical properties using TGA, FT-IR, EA and SEM-EDX.

In this paper, new type of finite element models for the analysis of nonlinear beam bending are developed by using unconventional residual minimizing method to increase accuracy of finite element solutions and overcome some of computational drawbacks. Developing procedures of the new models are presented along with the comparison of the numerical results of existing beam bending models.
