Superhydrophobic surface from sublimation and recondensation of smectic liquid crystal film

We have demonstrated that this dual-roughness surface possesses considerably hydro-phobic characteristics (contact angle (CA) ~130°) through sublimation and recondensation of smectic A film on micron patterns. This superhydrophobic surface could be ma-nipulated using a square-type pillar-patterned Si substrate with the evolved toric focal conic domains (TFCDs) by thermal annealing. This configuration yielded hierarchical structures, resulting in a high CA of ~150° and a low hysteresis angle of ~9°. The characteristics of this dual-roughed surface were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Water repellence of the surface was confirmed by measurements of CAs and hysteresis angles.
