The first Cybathlon will be held in October 2016 and this contest is designed for developing prosthetic technologies. In this study, we analyzed the Cybathlon and from this analysis we researched advanced prosthetic technologies. In addition, we ascertained some ethical issues about post-human beings with prosthetic equipment, which could rehabilitate disabled people and even serve to enhance non-disabled people. Disability is only one of the inconveniences that a person must endure, but everyone has some sort of inconvenience to endure. We found the possibilities of dissolving boundaries between people with disabilities and their able-bodied counterparts through the Cybathlon and prosthetic devices. The features and role of our body itself will be expanded with the help of these future technologies. Engineers, inventors and designers are making better prostheses for disabilities, but these could help not only disabled people but also every non-disabled people. The dominant ethical debates that appear in bioethics and human- related enhancement are reliability, authenticity and autonomy. Reliability and autonomy are the question of being safe and controllable. In this study, we want to raise a question on authenticity: ‘if a person with a powered-prosthesis sets a better record, should we admit it?’

<P>The <I>Hebei Spirit</I> oil spill episode (December 7, 2007) has affected the western coastal area of South Korea; however, there is limited information on the potential toxicity of the oil spill to the ecosystem or humans. The potential toxicity of sediments collected from the affected area (<I>n</I> = 22) 2 years after the spill was evaluated. Acute lethal toxicity tests using <I>Vibrio fischeri</I> and <I>Moina macrocopa</I> and tests for genotoxicity and alteration of steroidogenesis using chicken DT40 cells and H295R cells, respectively, were conducted. Both crude and weathered oil extracts were evaluated in order to link the observed toxicity in the sediment extracts to the oil spill. Whereas toxicity to bacteria and daphnids was observed in only two elutriate samples, 10 of the 22 sediment extracts showed genotoxic potential in DT40 cells. The mechanisms of genotoxicity involved nucleotide excision repair (XPA–/), homologous recombination (RAD54–/–), and translesion synthesis pathways (REV3–/–). In addition, nine sediment extracts caused significantly greater production of E2 in H295R cells, and significant up-regulation of CYP19, CYP11B2, and 3βHSD2 by sediment extracts was observed. The pattern of toxicities observed in both crude and weathered oil samples was similar to that observed in the sediment extracts. The genotoxicicity and endocrine-disruption potential of the sediment extracts suggest a need for long-term followup for such toxicity in humans and wildlife in this area.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/esthag/2011/esthag.2011.45.issue-17/es200724x/production/images/medium/es-2011-00724x_0003.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/es200724x'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A) is the only hypusine-containing protein, which is formed by deoxyhypusine synthase (DHS) and deoxyhypusine hydroxylase (DOHH). DOHH is a novel metalloenzyme with HEAT [named for human huntingtin (H), elongation factor 3 (E), a subunit of protein phosphatase 2A (A), and the target of rapamycin (T)]-repeat motifs. Inspite of much progress in determining the roles of iron-containing DOHH holoenzyme as an eIF5A hydroxylase, little is known about iron-free apoenzyme of DOHH under certain stress conditions. For this purpose, we compared cell growth in two yeast strains subjected to oxidative damage. Thus, the existence of more viable cells in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY4743 (parental yeast) strain than in the DOHH- strain after $H_2O_2$ treatment indicates the importance of DOHH in protecting yeast cells against oxidative stress. To identify endogenous target proteins influenced by DOHH under oxidative damage, proteomic analysis was applied to the two yeast strains. Of these proteins, the oxidized form of peroxiredoxin I (PrxI) was concomitantly up-regulated in both strains under $H_2O_2$ treatment. Two-dimensional electrophoresis (DE) followed by immunoblot analysis shows that the recovery of the oxidized PrxI to the reduced enzyme under $H_2O_2$ treatment was found to be much slower in the DOHH- strain than in the parental strain. Based on the results, we discovered a possible interaction between DOHH and PrxI by immunoprecipitation/immunoblotting in yeast under oxidative stress. Taken together, these results suggest that DOHH might be a candidate protein for protection of yeast cells against oxidative stress in conjunction with PrxI.

Purpose: Long-term results following bariatric surgery compared to conventional treatments has never been reported in morbidly obese Korean patients. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term efficacy of bariatric surgery in morbidly obese Korean patients compared to conventional medical treatments. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, we reviewed 137 obese subjects between January 2008 and February 2011 with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2 who had more than 5 years of follow-up clinical data after bariatric surgery (surgery group, n = 49) or conventional treatment (conventional treatment group, n = 88). Anthropometric data and the status of comorbidities were compared between the 2 groups. Results: The median follow-up period was 72.1 months (range 19.3–109.7 months). At the last follow-up, the surgery group showed a greater amount of total weight loss than the conventional treatment group (24.9% vs. 2.8%, P < 0.001). The prevalence of diabetes and hypertension significantly decreased in the surgery group, while the conventional treatment group showed a marked increase in these comorbidities. In the surgery group, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy achieved comparable long-term weight loss (26.5% vs. 22.4%, respectively; P = 0.087). Conclusion: In the long-term, bariatric surgery achieved and maintained significantly greater weight reduction, as well as a decrease in obesity-related comorbidities, than did conventional medical therapy in morbidly obese Korean patients

A 45-year-old male with alleged asymptomatic hepatic hemangioma of 4 years duration had right upper-quadrant pain and was referred to a tertiary hospital. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed a hypervascular mass of about 7 cm containing intratumoral multilobulated cysts. A preoperative liver biopsy was performed, but this failed to provide a defi nitive diagnosis. The patient underwent a partial hepatectomy of segments IV and VIII. The histologic fi ndings revealed multifocal proliferation of fl attened or cuboidal epithelioid cells and a highly vascular edematous stroma. Immunohistochemistry fi ndings demonstrated that the epithelioid tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), vimentin, calretinin, and cytokeratin 5/6, and were focally positive for CD10, and negative for WT1 and CD34, all of which support their mesothelial origin. Immunohistochemistry for a mesothelial marker should be performed for determining the presence of an adenomatoid tumor when benign epithelioid cells are seen. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2012;18:229-234)

<P>Enhancing the short circuit current (<I>J</I>SC) by extending the absorption to the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, which has 50% of the total solar photon flux, is a remaining task in small molecular solar cells. Here, high efficiency NIR absorbing solar cells based on lead phthalocyanine (PbPc) are reported using copper iodide (CuI) as a templating layer to control the crystal structure of PbPc. Devices with CuI inserted between the ITO and PbPc layers exhibit a two times enhancement of the <I>J</I>SC compared to the case in the absence of the CuI layer. This is explained by the increase of crystallinity in the molecules grown on the CuI templating layer, which is investigated <I>via</I> an X-ray diffraction study. Moreover, fill factor is also enhanced to 0.63 from 0.57 due to low series resistance although the additional CuI layer is inserted between the ITO and the PbPc layer. As a result, the corrected power conversion efficiency of 2.5% was obtained, which is the highest one reported up to now among the PbPc based solar cells.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Extending the absorption to the near-infrared spectrum is demonstrated by inserting a very thin CuI layer between the ITO and PbPc layer, resulting in the increase of <I>J</I>SC, FF and PCE at the same time. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2jm30417a'> </P>

Shim, Hwan-Ki,Kim, Seong-Yeol,Kim, Bo-Rim,Cho, Jae-Park,Park, Yae-Jeong,Ji, Won-Geun,Cha, Dong-Seok,Jeon, Hoon Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2010 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.10 No.4
Verbena officinalis (Verbenaceae) has been used as herbal medicine or health supplement in both Western and Eastern countries for centuries. In the present study, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methylene chloride fraction of V. officinalis (VMC). To elucidate the anti-inflammatory properties of VMC, we investigated the inhibition effects of nitric oxide production in interferon-gamma (IFN-$\gamma$) and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. VMC suppressed nitric oxide production, inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression dose-dependently without notable cytotoxicity. In various radical scavenging assays, VMC exhibited strong scavenging effect on DPPH radical, superoxide radical, nitric oxide radical and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical. VMC also showed potent reducing power. These findings strongly suggest that VMC may be beneficial in oxidative stress-mediated inflammatory disorders.
