Chitosan–aloe vera gel coating delays postharvest decay of mango fruit
Sadiq Shah,Majid S. Hashmi 한국원예학회 2020 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.61 No.2
In this study, the impact of chitosan in combination with aloe vera gel was investigated on the storage life of mango fruits. Mango samples were coated with 1% chitosan (CTS) and 1% chitosan + aloe vera gel (CTS + AVG), before storing at12 ± 1 °C for 28 days and shifting to 25 ± 1 °C for 5 days. Results demonstrated that both coatings signifi cantly ( p ≤ 0.05)infl uenced the storage life of mango fruits, but CTS + AVG minimized the incidence of decay, and reduced weight loss, respirationrate, and ethylene production to a greater extent than CTS and control samples. In addition, fruit quality parameterssuch as titratable acidity, total soluble solids, fruit fi rmness, ascorbic acid, and peel color were also retained by the combinedtreatment. Furthermore, sustained phenolic content and antioxidant activity confi rmed the eff ectiveness of this treatment. It was concluded that chitosan coating in combination with aloe vera gel suppressed diseases and maintained the naturalproperties of mango fruit during postharvest storage. Therefore, chitosan–aloe vera combination can be used to extend thestorage life of mango fruit, however, more in-depth studies are required for successful commercialization of this organic, edible coating in the mango fruit industry.

The eff ect of preharvest sprayable 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on fruit quality and certain targeted major metaboliteswas investigated in ‘Chuhwangbae’ pears during short-term cold storage and shelf life. Preharvest 1-MCP applicationaff ected methionine, sucrose, and total fl avonoid content and fruit decay. During cold storage and shelf life, numerous fruitquality attributes and specifi c targeted metabolites were aff ected not by preharvest 1-MCP application but by the storageduration. Overall responses in the normalized heatmap matrix and principal component analysis (PCA) loading plot showedthat preharvest sprayable 1-MCP treatment enhanced the incidence of physiological disorders and suppressed the responsesof targeted metabolites compared with that in untreated fruit. The results obtained using the PCA score plot showed thatphysiological and biochemical parameters of the fruit after preharvest 1-MCP treatment were highly separated and divergedbased on the storage duration. Nevertheless, preharvest 1-MCP treatment did not signifi cantly aff ect the physiological andbiochemical responses associated with fruit parameters or soluble carbohydrates and free amino acids contents in cold-storedpears. Therefore, the results suggest that preharvest sprayable 1-MCP application may not have strong positive eff ects on thepostharvest quality attributes of ‘Chuhwangbae’ pears during cold storage and shelf life.
Correlation among Quality Attributes and Storability by Fruit Weight in 'Fuji' Apples
Park, Youn-Moon,Yoon, Tae-Myung,Youn, Seack-Won,Han, Su-Gon,Woo, Young-Jae 安東大學校 農業科學技術硏究所 1999 農業科學技術 硏究論文集 Vol.6 No.-
Relationship of fruit weight with other quality parameters and storablity were evaluated in 'Fuji' apples harvested on a commercial harvest date from two orchards located in 'Andong' and 'Youngyang' area. Inter-correlations among quality parameters were also analyzed. Significant correlations observed in both orchards were; nigative relationships between fruit weight and flesh firmness, surface color and Hunter 'b' value, positive relationship between surface color and Hunter 'a' value, and soluble solid content (SSC) and juice acidity. Correlations between fruit weight and SSC or juice acidity were not significant in both orchards. In Contrast. between the two orchards, opposite correlation coefficients were observed in the combination of fruit weight with surface color. The correlation coefficient was negative, although insignificant, in 'Andong' apples, whereas significantly positive in 'Youngyang' apples. Likewise, fruit weight was negatively correlated with Hunter 'a' value in 'Andong' apples, while positively correlated in 'Youngyang' apples. No clear relationship was observed between fruit weight and storability as estimated by changes in flesh firmness and flavor parameters.
