        Factors Influencing Use of Mental Health Helping Systems among College Students in Korea

        Objective: This study examined the use of mental health helping systems among college students in Korea. A behavioral model of health service utilization was applied to examine factors influencing different types of helping systems. Methods: A total of 454 college students from four universities participated in the survey. A self-administered questionnaire measuring help-seeking behaviors including formal health and mental health services, informal helping system, peer group, and family support was used. Results: Respondents frequently turn to family members and peer group when in need, and age, sex, mental health status, and attitude and knowledge on mental illness were significant factors affecting help-seeking behaviors of Korean students. While older students and those with more severe symptoms were more likely to seek help from formal resources, students with more severe symptoms were less likely to seek help from informal resources. Male students and those with negative attitude toward mental illness were less likely to ask peer groups for help. Conclusions: Study results indicate that informal resources and peer groups can be significant sources of social support for individuals in their late adolescence and young adulthood, however, their role as gateways to professional help is limited. Student counseling centers should take on a more active role in reaching out; implications for developing peer leaders as counselors and self-help groups are discussed.         학생 정서·행동특성 검사 및 관리에 대한 학부모의 지식과 태도

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate parents’ perceptions and attitudes regarding a screening test for and subsequent management of students’ emotional and behavioral problems. Methods: A descriptive research design was used, and included disproportional stratified and cluster random sampling. The sample comprised 223 parents of elementary, middle, and high school students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test, and ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: Overall, parents responded that they knew of the goals, types, and tools of screening tests for students’ emotional and behavioral problems. In total, 64.6% of parents reported having information for the screening test in advance. Only 13.5%(n=30) of students had emotional and behavioral problems in the last year. Among these students, 56.7%(n=17) were referred to mental health facilities but only 29.4%(n=5) of them received ongoing management from these facilities. Conclusion: These findings suggest that parents should receive information about the screening test for and subsequent management of students’ emotional and behavioral problems. Health professionals need to build strategies to provide ongoing management for students who have emotional and behavioral problems.

      • 의료봉사에 대한 노인과 한의대생의 만족도 및 노인의 의료복지서비스에 대한 인식 조사

        Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine senior citizens`` perception of medical welfare service in Daejeon, and to investigate the level of Korean Medicine University students`` satisfaction about medical services that they have done. Methods: We visited Daejeon city hall and Dae jeon Seo-gu community health center, and interviewed them. After that we select two population and did two different surveys. First, to investigate the current state of medical services and medical welfare in Daejeon, we select neglected class senior citizens who were serviced at social welfare center. Second, we select Daejeon Korean Medicine University student to investigate the level of satisfaction about medical services and pre-education. In first population, we random select 25 of 34 senior citizen who visits mere social welfare center. In second population, we random select 78 of 115 Korean Medicine University student who belongs to medical welfare club. Results: We found some advantages and problems in medical services. A lot of senior citizen who were serviced at social welfare center showed high level of satisfaction about medical service. But there were few citizens who knows about health & medical welfare. And most Korean Medicine University student who services medical service to neglected class senior citizens showed high level of satisfaction. Conclusion: We concluded that medical welfare for senior citizen needs more publicizing. Because result of our survey, many senior citizens showed not only low level of recognition in medical welfare service, also showed low utilization rate in public health center. And most Korean Medicine University students were satisfied with themselves about medical service that they have done, it seemed medical service gives beneficial influence to not only senior citizen but also Korean Medicine University student.

        간호학생의 정신건강서비스 이용의도의 예측요인: 정신건강정보이해능력을 중심으로

        Purpose: This study aimed to identify predicting factors on intention to use mental health services of nursing students. Factors such the predisposing, enabling, and need factors based on Anderson’s behavioral model were tested. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational study design was used. The subjects in the study were 220 nursing students. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, x<sup>2</sup> test, t-test, and logistic regression with SPSS 24.0. Results: On logistic regression analysis, the experience of accessing information related to mental health (disease) (OR=3.90, p<.05) and sub-factors of mental health literacy, knowledge of self-treatment (OR=1.89, p<.05) were statistically significant factors for mental health services use intention. This constitued 30.5% of the intentions to use mental health services. Conclusion: Nursing students are more likely to use mental health services as they have more experience with mental health related information and more knowledge on self-treatment related to mental health.

        교사의 낙인수준과 학생에 대한 상담태도간의 관계에서 교사자신의 상담태도의 역할

        This study is to examine the relationship between stigma and teachers' attitudes in students' usage of mental health services. In addition, the study also investigated the role of teachers' personal attitudes toward seeking help as a mediator between these two variables. A total of 113 teachers were participated in this study, hierarchiecal regression analysis was conducted in oder to analyze the data. The results indicated that teachers' attitudes in regard to seeking help mediated in the relationship between self-stigma and teachers' attitudes of students' usage of mental health services. Furthermore, teachers' attitudes in students' usage of mental health services was directly affected by public stigma in seeking help. On the other hand, teachers' attitudes toward students who seek mental health services are directly and indirectly affected by self-stigma. Finally, the implication and limitation of the findings were discussed. 본 연구는 아동 및 청소년들의 상담서비스 이용에 영향을 미치는 요인을 밝히고자, 학생의 상담서비스 이용에 대한 교사의 태도(학생상담태도)변인과 교사의 사회적 낙인 및 자기 낙인 그리고 교사 자신의 상담태도(교사상담태도)와의 관계를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해, 113명의 초등, 중, 고등학교 교사들이 분석에 포함되었다. 결과에서, 교사상담태도가 자기낙인 및 사회낙인과 학생상담태도와의 관계에서 작용하는 매개효과 검증을 통해, 교사상담태도가 자기낙인과 학생상담태도와의 관계에서 매개효과를 보이는 것을 확인하였다. 한편, 사회적 낙인의 경우, 학생상담태도와의 관계에서의 직접적으로만 영향을 미치고 있었으며, 자기낙인은 학생상담태도에 직접적 그리고 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 교사상담태도는 자기낙인과 학생상담태도와의 관계에서 매개변인으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이후 본 연구의 의의와 한계를 논의하였다.

        한 중 양국 외국인 유학생 유치정책의 발전과 주요 제도 비교 연구

        세계 경제의 발전은 세계 고등교육 시장의 국제화를 촉진하였고, 최근 학령인구의 감소, 고등 교육 시장의 초과 공급으로 국내 대학뿐만 아니라 세계의 대학들이 세계의 학생들을 대 상으로 유학생을 유치하기 위해 전력을 다하고 있다. 이러한 고등교육 시장의 국제화 배경 아래 2014년 在韓 외국인 유학생 수는 84,891명에 이르렀다. 그 중 중국 유학생이 한국 전체 외국인 유학생의 60% 정도를 차지하고, 한국 유학생 역시 최근 중국의 외국인 유학생 중 가 장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있어 한 중 양국은 교육서비스 무역에서 상당히 중요한 교역국이 다. 최근 세계 유학 시장의 두드러진 특징 중 하나는 유학생들의 이동에서 권역 내 이동이 더 욱 증가하고 있다는 것이며, 이런 의미에서 현재 중국은 한국의 최대의 유학생 송출국이기도 하면서 같은 권역 내 아시아 유학생 유치의 경쟁국이기도 하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 한국의 외국인 유학생 유치 확대를 위해 한 중 양국의 외국인 유학생 교육 발전 및 주요 제도 중 장 학금제도, 의료보험제도 및 시간제 취업 취업제도를 중심으로 한 중 양국의 외국인 유학생 유치 정책과 제도에 대한 비교 연구를 진행하고 이를 바탕으로 한국의 외국인 유학생 유치 확대를 위한 제언을 하고자 한다. Development of the world economy has promoted an internationalization of the global higher education market. Due to the recent decrease in the school-age population and oversupply in the higher education market, universities in Korea and worldwide are making arduous efforts to attract students from all over the world. Along with the internationalization, the number of international students in Korea already reached 84,891 in 2014. Amongst them, Chinese students account for 60% of the overall international student population in Korea. Likewise, Korean students also represent the largest share of the total international student population recently enrolled in the educational institutions in China. Korea and China are essential partners for each other in their education service trade. A marked feature of the recent global educational market is the accelerating increase in the movement of students within the bloc. Currently, China is not only the greatest sender of students to Korea but also a rival in attracting students from other Asian countries. The purpose of this study is to explore the new directions for policy making to expand the number of international students in Korea by comparing both the paths of development up to the present taken by Korea and China for education of international students and the major educational systems of the two countries. More specifically, to boost the bid to attract more students from overseas countries, this paper carried out a comparative analysis of education for international students in the two countries, focusing on some of the key policies and systems on education of foreign students. Particular attention was paid to scholarship programs, health insurance schemes, part-time employment and general employment policies. Based upon the results of the comparative analysis, this study proposed a strategy to induce more international students into Korea.

        일 대학 외국인 유학생들의 대학건강센터 이용 실태 조사

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify international students’ use of university health centers by individual characteristics and seasons. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study using data obtained from the electronic record system of one university health center. The study participants were international undergraduate students who registered for any of two semesters between March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015 and visited the university health center during their registration period. Results: The most common reasons for visits were problems of head, eye, nose and throat systems, followed by respiratory system. Their visits mostly occurred in the fall and spring. The most frequently used services were distribution of oral medication followed by wound treatment. The number of visits per individual was statistically different by gender (u=-3.307, p=.001), but not by their major (χ²=.543, p=0.762) or nationality (χ²=5.518, p=.271). Conclusion: Further study is necessary to better define health needs and related factors for this unique population. The electronic record system provides great opportunities in development and application of need based health services for international students and for research in this area.

        Factors Influencing Use of Mental Health Helping Systems among College Students in Korea

        목적: 이 연구는 한국 대학생의 정신건강 원조체계 활용을 고찰하는데 일차적 목적을 두고, 보건의료서비스 이용에 관한 모델을 적용하여 다양한 정신건강 원조체계의 활용에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 파악하고자 했다. 방법: 수도권에 위치한 4년제 대학 4곳에서 총 454명의 학생들이 본 연구를 위한 설문에 참여했다. 자기응답식 설문지를 사용하여 공식적 보건의료 및 정신보건서비스, 비공식적 원조체계, 동년배 집단, 가족지지로 구분되는 다양한 원조체계와 관련된 도움요청 행위 (help-seeking behavior)에 관한 자료를 수집했다. 결과: 조사응답자들은 심리정신적 어려움에 처했을 때 흔히 도움을 요청하는 대상으로 가족이나 동년배 집단에 속하는 다양한 유형의 대상을 꼽았으며, 이들 다양한 유형의 지원에 도움을 구하는데 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나이, 성별, 심리정신적 증상, 정신질환에 대한 지식, 태도가 유의미하게 나타났다. 나이와 심리정신적 증상이 높을수록 공식적 서비스를 활용할 가능성이 높았으며, 증상이 심한 경우 비공식적 차원(종교인, 교수 등)에 도움을 요청할 가능성이 낮았다. 남학생의 경우와 정신질환에 대해 부정적 지식과 태도를 갖고 있는 경우는 동년배(선후배, 동성 및 이성친구 등)에게 도움을 요청할 가능성이 낮았다. 결론: 비공식적 자원이나 동년배 집단은 발달적으로 청소년후기 및 청년전기에 속하는 대학생 집단에 있어 사회적 지지로서, 전문적 도움의 관문으로서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있음에도 불구하고 그 역할이 제한적이므로, 동년배상담자 훈련이나 자조집단 육성 등을 비롯한 대학 상담부서의 적극적인 정신건강 아웃리치(outreach) 노력이 필요하다.         대학생들의 정신건강 서비스 이용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구

        이 연구는 대학생들을 대상으로 정신건강 서비스 이용의도에 영향을 미치는 심리사회적 요인들과 응답자의 특성 요인들이 어느 정도의 영향을 미치는가를 밝히는 것을 연구의 목적으로 한다. 구체적으로, 정신건강에 대한 지식수준, 주관적 규범, 도움추구 태도와 사회심리적 스트레스 수준이 응답자의 도움추구 의도에 미치는 영향력을 검증하였다. 연구결과, 주관적 규범, 사회심리적 스트레스 수준, 정신건강서비스 이용태도가 정신건강 서비스 이용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 판명되었다. 이 요인들의 도움추구 의도에 대한 영향력은 사회심리적 스트레스 수준, 도움추구 태도, 주관적 규범의 순으로 나타났다. 연구는 대학생들의 정신건강 서비스 이용의도의 예측 요인들을 확인함으로써 정신건강 증진 및 인식 캠페인 실행시 메시지 개발에 도움이 되는 함의를 제공하였다. The purpose of this study is to find out how much psychosocial factors affecting the intention to use mental health services and the characteristics of respondents in college students. Specifically, the influence of the level of knowledge about mental health, subjective norms, attitudes for seeking help, and social psychological stress levels on the respondents’ intention to seek help is examined. As a result of the study, it was found that the subjective norms, social and psychological stress levels, and mental health students’ intention to use mental health services were influenced by factors. It was found that subjective norms, psychosocial stress level, and attitude toward using mental health service were factors that influence the intention to use mental health service. The influence of these factors on help seeking intention was in the order of psychosocial stress level, help seeking attitude, and subjective norm. The study provided implications that were helpful in message development when executing mental health promotion and awareness campaigns by identifying predictive factors of the intention to use mental health services of college students.

        정신건강서비스의 경제적 가치: 대학상담활동을 중심으로

        본 연구는 대학생들의 심리적 안녕과 이들의 정신건강을 증진할 수 있는 전략을 마련하고자 스트레스 및 정신건강수준과 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 대학생의 정신건강 서비스 이용에 대한 실태, 정신건강관련 변인들의 사회적 비용과 대학상담서비스의 경제적 가치를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 대학생의 상담 서비스 중 집단상담 프로그램에 대한 경제적 가치가 비용-효과분석(cost-effectiveness analysis)을 바탕으로 세 가지 방식(정신건강 문제의 해결이 고용에 미치는 경제적 가치, 질적인 삶의 보정년수에 따른 경제적 가치, 집단상담 서비스의 비용과 편익을 고려한 경제적 이득)으로 산출되었다. 본 연구 결과에 따르면 장기적으로 한 개인이 집단상담에 투자한 비용 대비 90배 이상의 이득을 얻을 수 있다고 나왔다. 이를 통해 정신건강서비스 이용에 대한 가치와 중요성을 다시 한 번 확인하였고, 심리증상과 문제행동의 우선순위의 비교를 통해 사회적 비용을 가장 효율적으로 감소시킬 수 있는 방안에 대한 실증적인 근거자료를 제공하였다. This study aims to estimate the degree of utilization of mental health services, social costs of mental illness, and economic values of college counseling center to develop the strategies that help college students to improve their psychological well-being and mental health. The cost-effective analyses of the group counseling in college students were conducted with three different approaches as follow: 1) The effect of mental health treatment on employment prospects, 2) The effect of mental health treatment onquality- adjusted life years, 3) The monetary-gain analyses by evaluating the costs and benefits of group counseling. As a result, individuals who received the group counseling could obtain 90 times more monetary gain than those who did not receive the group counseling. The results of this study verified the values of mental health service and provided empirical evidences for how to decrease social costs efficiently by identifying the priority of psychological problems and symptoms.
