(Background and Goal) Among various objets, chair design is influenced by spatial size, shape and characteristics of consumers. Chair in the space is usually affected by consumers, and sometimes it causes their behaviors; through these, various communication happens. In other words, chair is an essential factor that composes space, and it plays a medium between human and space as objet. Therefore, prospecting chair design in stance of space design is worthy enough to implement. (Research Method) In this research, we try to analysis chair design of Arne Emil Jacobsen and Verner Panton in aspect of space objet among numerous sorts of chairs. First of all, we considered traits and developed background of modern design in Demark and arranged concepts about relationship between space and objet as theoretical contemplation. For the next, we looked into traits through 8 pieces of chair design arts of Arne Emil Jacobsen and Verner Panton. Finally, we analyzed and classified traits of chair design of two maestros by their functions of shape, material, end and space, and we drew a conclusion. (Result) As chair design of Arne Emil Jacobsen and Verner Panton was analyzed in aspect of space objet, chair design of Arne Emil Jacobsen expressed organic forms in metaphorical way, and pursued simplicity to the exclusion of unnecessary decorations. Additionally, it pursued humorous and flexible formativeness as an united body forming back and seat together. For materials and end, minimizing materials, production process, and integrating new technology of plywood molding method were pursued. For spatial function, stacking functions which are light and able to store helped to get comfortable movement and minimize space, and it offered comfort by shaping personal space wrapping people`s body. Additionally, it could be transformed in various shape, and it made us to use it in multiple ways according to necessity of space. Chair design of Verner Panton pursued dynamic shapes and abstract curves following tendency of pop arts. They used various materials such as synthetic resins and metal rather than timber which were found by experiments using new materials, and prefer primary color with high chroma. For spatial functions, they offered various options and variables to positions and locations, and made a border between space and chair ambiguous. Also, they pursued light and practical design. (Conclusion) Finally, we contemplated functions in space, and analyzed examples or arts relevant to chair design as space objet. As space objet, we could figure out chair was a device factor which were fitting on aim of space, and it induced users to participate, and it was functionally and physically objet. In the future, we hopefully expect that this article can be used as a baseline data for research about space, chair, and compatibility between space and human`s behaviour based on this result.

Vol.13 No.6

(Background and Purpose) As the population of Korea decreases, vacant spaces such as empty houses and other buildings are increasing rapidly. According to data from the National Statistical Office's National Employment Survey, which is released every five years, the number of empty houses nationwide increased about 26% between 2010 and 2015. This represents a dramatic increase when compared to the period between 2005 and 2010, which was characterized by a 9% increase. These vacant spaces become slums in the city. They are used for crime and do not provide psychological stability as spaces for human settlement. However, the rapidly growing number of vacant spaces has the potential to become a new resource rather than a factor with public sector problems. Many studies on industrial heritage and vacant space have emphasized the necessity of “cultural regeneration.” Among the studies on the cultural reproduction of the vacant space, the analysis and evaluation of the situation through space planning and research are underway. Through this, we analyze the present situation comprehensively and present a basic plan for space design policy for the cultural reproduction of vacant space. (Method) In this study, we analyze policies related to space design for the cultural reproduction of vacant space in Korea through literature review and data analysis. In addition, we examine the relationship between regulating laws and promoting laws in the current legal system. We investigate the implications of space design policy and laws for the cultural reproduction of vacant space; on the basis of this analysis, we draw up policies and plans for the cultural management and utilization of vacant space in the future. (Results) For the cultural revitalization of vacant space, policies and legislation related to software are needed in place of the current hardware-specific policies. For this process, the government, users, and professional space designers need to play a role. It is necessary to make the vacant space DB and to construct the design space for the reproduction space. (Conclusions) This study is a preliminary study to establish space design policies for the cultural reproduction of vacant space in Korea. The basic plan derived from the present situation analysis may be used as a basis for further research examining the policy of recycling cultural space, the plan for fostering recreational space designer experts, and the design policy for recycled space. This suggests a policy to solve the problem of the public part in the area of space design. It constitutes an information service of vacant space and a professional organization.

Vol.11 No.5

(Background and Purpose)Modern society is transforming into an economic service society, triggered by the increase in interest in service, as well as diversification in the consumers`` experiences and needs. Demands are also increasing for cultural art experiences. Thus, appropriate service design is essential in cultural art spaces to satisfy consumers`` demand. This research analyzes how service design elements are applied in cultural art spaces to identify its primary role. (Method) This research will study the principles and trends in service design, and service design elements`` application in spaces will be extracted through an element analysis. The scope is narrowed based on such criteria to the Kumho Art Hall Yonsei among various cultural art spaces, and its spacing is also specified. The researchers analyzed the service design elements in the space by coding the Touchpoint method in the Kumho Art Hall Yonsei, and examined each case in the property. This method analyzed service design characteristics, which were then applied to a touch point in each detailed space. It then studied how these characteristics are reflected in the cultural art space depending on the service design``s components. These theories were considered and reflected in the case analysis`` results; the results were ultimately derived regarding the roles and values of the service design as applied to cultural art spaces. (Results)First, the space provided a fluent cultural art experience, and service to the users was harmonious between the space and the service design property. Second, the space with the highest distribution result among other cultural art spaces was the one that reflected the users`` experiences and needs: convenience, interaction, and information. Third, the service design property with least distribution result needed self-complimentary strategies to satisfy service users`` needs in their active space experience. (Conclusions)The researchers discovered through this study that service design is an essential element to improve corporate image as this satisfies the users`` needs for cultural art experiences. Additionally, it could be predicted that it is necessary to plan cultural art spaces to evenly distribute the characteristics by reflecting the service design components that form the space. Further, it was confirmed that the service design property is a necessary prerequisite to adapting optimized space design programs and high-quality space design policies in an economic service society. Finally, research must be sustained regarding service designs for the user``s experiences in various spaces.

Vol.28 No.1

The appropriate way to approach design is to have a strong belief in our intuitive sense of form and space, with consideration for functional needs. These principles are necessary in order for design to be a product both designer and consumer alike can appreciate and enjoy. Space is one of the essential design elements where we can find and identify individual characteristics in art and design. The main concepts of space―positive and negative space or volume in design―is to encourage us to observe two opposite circumstances as a whole, not as two different extremes. It blurs the line between subject and object, and rather embraces them as a whole. Instead of drawing a divide between positive and negative space, the two can work harmoniously as a system of reciprocity.1) From my experiences of having taught design students, they have not unlocked the full potential use of negative space. Therefore, the objectives of this study is to stimulate a revitalized recognition for negative space, in which may pave new ways of seeing and thinking. Through implementing this new lens, designers will not only generate new forms, but will be able to unleash a new dimension of aesthetics where physical objects can partake to make our environment a richer place. The range and method of this study introduces ways for how creative and experiential application of negative space(volume) in design education can satisfy the consumer and market’s needs. In order to meet this standard of design, the systematic aesthetic theory and practice in both professional and academic settings will be pivotal. In the result, students will be more knowledgeable of the importance of negative space in design. By support of this study, research was built from materials related to 3-dimensional negative space consisting of published books, various journals, photos and digital references. On top of my research, my experience teaching design for many years have also contributed to this design study. This study is for readers to understand the aesthetics of abstract 3-dimensional forms and their relation to negative space and volume. To explain the basis of negative space in abstract form, the study features case studies conducted by students in which they analyzed a variety of geometric and organic forms through the process of experimental 3-dimensional sketches. The contents and results of this research emphasizes the ares of design education in which are neglected and understated. Especially for those students who major in 3-D related design, the innovative and systematic training of abstract 3-dimensional forms must be at the foundation of their education and throughout their design practice. Consequently, this study is an opportunity for creative institutions to re-evaluate and re-establish the core values for what defines a successful design product – both aesthetically and functionally.

Vol.28 No.3

In the modern society, young people rush the urban development and choose living alone actively so that single-person households are continuously increased, however, emotional loneliness has been emerged as an issue. Thanks to the companion animals, the difficulties of single-person households were resolved somewhat, yet, significant time and energy should be spent to take care of pet dogs and cats. Compared to pet dogs, cats are quiet, independent, clean, and good for staying indoors with easy caring, hence, people to choose them as the companion animals are increased. Also, as their position was enhanced within the family, people try to improve the quality of life with cats and meet their basic demands, resulting in a variety of designed products only for cats. Among them, furniture living together with cats is sold upon its demand, however, the durability and functions are poor not to satisfy the consumers’ demands. In addition, as the consumer market is rapidly changing, the demands on the furniture for pet cats with living together function are increased, which requires the furniture designs urgently so as to live together with cats in the living space. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the effects of furniture design living with cats on the living space so as to assist the basic data on the design development in the area of furniture design industry and creation of new market. The study method is the literature review to prepare the theoretical foundation. Companion cats were analyzed with online data and the cases on the furniture for cats were investigated. With regard to the study scope, bedroom, living room, kitchen, and entry space were selected to deduct the following conclusions. First, the furniture design for cats in the living room should be realized as the specific design according to the consumers’ functional needs on the furniture to meet the social interaction between people and cats. According to the coexistence principle of furniture shape and environment, the artistic concept of the shape can play a lubricant role of living space only if it is integrated into the environment living with cats. Second, bedroom space requires sufficient comfort as a resting area. The furniture design for cats in the bedroom should be ergonomic considering the size, shape, color, material, and arrangement and satisfy the preference of cats to achieve the goals of practicality, comfort, and beauty. Third, practicality and convenience of the kitchen should be considered sufficiently. The furniture for cats can be used to divide the functional areas, which can expand the storage space as well as the physical space visually to add the interest in the space. Fourth, the entry space should be focused on organizing interactive environment considering comfort and stability. Using the characteristics of cats favoring caves and elevated places, the furniture design for cats combining with shoe rack and storage closet can be considered. Entry space as well as the space for cats should be secured as much as possible. The door should be designed considering the risk of cats that can hit when the door is opened. Hence, reasonable furniture for cats can facilitate the communication between people and cats and establish closer relationship. Analyzing and considering the needs of furniture for cats in the living space, high potential to create the new market in the furniture industry is anticipated if new types of furniture design is developed to be appropriate for interactions between people and cats.

      • “A” Parametric Approach Combined with Operations Research Model for Estimating “A” Cost of Space Systems at Conceptual Design Phase

Vol.- No.-

Throughout the earlier era of space exploration, the main space systems design driver was the concept of maximizing space mission performance under weak time and cost constraints but with conservative technology risk constraints: i.e., "design-to-performance". Design-to-performance attempted to satisfy a set of predefined performance requirements at minimum risk and cost: performance first and cost second. However, after the end of the Cold War, as the non-military, commercial aspects of space missions appeared more important than before, cost became a more dominant factor. In this new environment, space systems design became a difficult problem to model. Now, the objective of space systems design is to maximize mission goals under firm cost and schedule constraints but with prudent technology risk acceptance, or, equivalently maximizing space mission performance per estimated unit cost. Therefore, space missions should be designed and scoped to emphasize overall mission success within cost and schedule constraints by incorporating sufficient margins, reserves, and subsystem resiliency and by readily adopting innovative ideas. The real question in the space systems design domain under this approach is no longer. "Can we build the same space system for less money?" Rather, it is "Can we achieve or exceed the overall space mission objectives for agreed upon or less money and time constraints by readily adopting more innovative new technology?" Currently, space systems designers, therefore, tend to pursue a proven space systems design architecture or modify an existing idea rather than incorporating totally new system design alternatives. This tendency can be described by the "design-to-cost" philosophy that necessarily introduced the concept of "faster, better, cheaper" (low-cost, small-sat). In this paper, spurred by this new, more challenging environment, we are to show possible approaches to answer "a solution" of a space systems design at conceptual phase for a specific mission. Here. "a solution" is defined as the most favorable alternative design for the system on the basis of the decision-making design criteria.

(Background and Purpose) Universal design is a design concept that anyone can easily use. Universal design seems to be a concept representing general purpose design at this point in time. This study is to find the design area of the intersection of universal design and adaptive space. As a methodology of universal design, the purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of adaptive space and to examine the relationship structure between the characteristics and the effectiveness of universal design products in living space. The researcher hopes that through this study, universal design and the concept of design will develop. (Methods) Spaces and products should be used conveniently by more diverse people in more diverse places. Therefore, the research was conducted as follows. After the theoretical consideration specialized in the universal design and adaptive space, we pursued the characteristics and variable values of the universal design living space. And, it was checked that these characteristics are Modification characteristics that make a difference. With these characteristics as a frame, case analysis was conducted on universal design products in living spaces divided into living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and porches. (Results) In order to have a better difference in the living space of universal design, it was judged that it was necessary to be able to bring about a more diverse modification of place. As design characteristics for this, the characteristics of the physical elements of accessibility and shape transformation, the non-physical elements of sustainability and time variation, and the human elements of perceptibility and relationship change were summarized. In addition, for each product modification characteristic, the result of analyzing the user's demand, each element of the product function, and the value of use by product was derived. (Conclusion) This study focused on the intersection area of product and space among the scope of Universal Design. In addition, it was discussed that the space to which Universal Design is applied is based on a Non-representative value system. Through this, I tried to say that Universal Design is an alternative that can create better placeness through adaptability space-based transformation. By applying the product to which Universal Design is applied to the living space, it was intended to suggest that the modification of the adaptive space has universal design value. As an extended study in the future, it was intended to present the possibility that research on the development direction of various universal design products and research on place modification through universal design could lead to a Re-appropriation system of space and products.
