      • Wall teichoic acid is an essential component of Staphylococcus aureus for the induction of human dendritic cell maturation

        <P>Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive pathogen that can cause chronic skin inflammation, pneumonia, and septic shock. The immunomodulatory functions of wall teichoic acid (WTA), a glycopolymer abundantly expressed on the Gram-positive bacterial cell wall, are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role of WTA in the phenotypic and functional activation of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs) treated with ethanol-killed S. aureus. WTA-deficient S. aureus mutant (Delta tagO) exhibited attenuated binding and internalization to DCs compared to the wild-type. Delta tagO induced lower expression of maturation markers on and cytokines in DCs than the wild-type S. aureus. Furthermore, autologous human peripheral blood mononuclear cells cocultured with Delta tagO-treated DCs exhibited a marked reduction in T cell proliferative activity, the expression of activation markers, and the production of cytokines compared to the wild-type S. aureus-stimulated DCs. Collectively, these results suggest that WTA is an important cell wall component of S. aureus for the induction of DC maturation and activation. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.</P>

      • Comparative Analysis of Different Grain Configurations for a Multi-thruster Kinetic Warhead

        The S-DACS multi-thruster warhead consists of 4 divert and 6 attitude thrusters fed from a common gas generator. Successful S-DACS intercept requires careful selection of the internal ballistics (grain configuration, chamber pressure, etc.), the sensors (seeker range, guidance law, etc.) as well as the external ballistics and sizing (booster diameter, S-DACS release velocity, flight time, maneuverability, etc.). These requirements and constraints are inter-dependent making the S-DACS mission analysis and sizing a difficult task. This work explores the connections between the choice of S-DACS grain configuration and sizing with the chamber pressure as a key parameter. Various parameters and center of gravity/ moment of inertia variations are compared for three different S-DACS grain configurations. Keywords: DACS, grain configuration, mission analysis

        A phase II study of everolimus (RAD001), an mTOR inhibitor plus CHOP for newly diagnosed peripheral T-cell lymphomas

        <P>Everolimus plus CHOP is effective for newly diagnosed, chemotherapy-naive peripheral T-cell lymphoma patients with acceptable toxicity.Everolimus, an oral mTOR inhibitor, has single-agent activity against relapsed lymphomas. Thus, we carried out a phase II study of everolimus in combination with CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) as a first-line treatment for patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) based on our phase I study results. Participants (n = 30) received CHOP with 5 mg everolimus per day from day 1 to 14 every 21 days for a total of six cycles. The primary end point was the overall response rate (ORR), which included complete response (CR) and partial response (PR) to this regimen. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the expression of phosphatase and tensin homology (PTEN) and phosphorylated S6 kinase (pS6K) as a response. The objective response rate was 90% with CR (n = 17) and PR (n = 10). The CR rate was different among subtypes; angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL, n = 3) had a CR whereas PTCL-not-otherwise specified and ALK-negative anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) patients showed 63% (12/19) and 29% (2/7) of CR rate, respectively. This difference in CR rate among subtypes was associated with PTEN loss because PTEN loss was not seen in AITL but 33% of ALCL patients. The most common toxicity was hematological, with 80% of patients experiencing at least one event of grade 3/4 neutropenia, and 60% of patients had grade 3/4 thrombocytopenia. The everolimus plus CHOP was effective for PTCL patients, and its efficacy might be related with the preservation of PTEN.</P>

        ZnO/SiO₂ 가지형 나노계층구조의 제작 및 광학적 특성 연구

        실리콘(silicon) 기판위에 전기화학증착법(electrochemical deposition)을 이용하여 성장된 ZnO (zinc oxide) 나노로드 표면에 SiO₂ (silicon dioxide)를 전자빔증발법(e-beam evaporation)을 이용하여 증착하였으며, 이는 자연적으로 경사입사(oblique angle) 증착이 이루어져 SiO₂ 나노로드가 자발 형성되어, ZnO/SiO₂ 가지형 나노계층구조형태가 제작될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 실험을 위해서 SiO₂ 증착률을 0.5 ㎚/s로 고정하고 SiO₂ 증착시간을 변화시켰으며, 각각 나노구조의 형태와 광학적 특성을 분석하였다. 실리콘 기판위에 전기화학증착법으로 성장된 ZnO 나노로드는 수직으로 정렬된 1차원의 나노구조의 기하학적 형태를 갖고 있어, 입사되는 빛의 파장이 300 ㎚에서 535 ㎚인 영역에서 10% 미만의 반사방지(antireflection) 특성을 보였으며, SiO₂ 증착시간이 100 s일 때의 ZnO/SiO₂ 가지형 나노계층구조에서는 점차적 변화를 갖는 유효 굴절률 분포로 인해 개선된 반사방지 특성을 확인하였다. 이러한 반사방지 특성과 branch 계층형태의 나노구조형태는 광전소자 및 태양광 소자 응용에 있어서 유용한 소재로 사용될 수 있다. We fabricated the ZnO (zinc oxide)/SiO₂ (silicon dioxide) branch hierarchical nanostructures by the e-beam evaporation of SiO₂ onto the surface of the electrochemically grown ZnO nanorods on Si substrate, which leads to the self-assembled SiO₂ nanorods by oblique angle deposition between vapor flux and vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. In order to investigate the effects of SiO₂ deposition on the morphology and optical property of ZnO/SiO₂ branch hierarchical nanostructures, the evaporation time of SiO₂ was varied under a fixed deposition rate of 0.5 ㎚/s. The vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on Si substrate exhibited a low reflectance of <10% in the wavelength range of 300∼535 ㎚. For ZnO/SiO₂ branch hierarchical nanostructures at 100 s of evaporation time of SiO₂, the more improved antireflective property was achieved. From these results, ZnO/SiO₂ branch hierarchical nanostructures are very promising for optoelectronic and photovoltaic device applications.

        Relaxation behaviors of enantiomorphic S-ibuprofen as revealed by dielectric and photon correlation spectroscopies

        Relaxation behaviors of enantiomorphic S-ibuprofen were investigated in its amorphous state by using dielectric and photon correlation spectroscopies. The dielectric relaxation processes of the S-ibuprofen were nearly identical to those of the racemic RS-ibuprofen. The relaxation parameters and the dielectric strengths of the α-process and the D-process for the S-ibuprofen were very similar to those for the RS-ibuprofen. These results indicate that the stereochemistry of ibuprofen molecules do not have any substantial effect on molecular motions in the amorphous state of ibuprofen. The relaxation times of the main relaxation process probed by using the photon correlation spectroscopy were consistent with those of the dielectric α-process. The fragility of the S-ibuprofen was 76, which was nearly the same to that determined based on the thermal relaxation times and smaller than that of the racemic compound.

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlations big five personality traits, abnormal eating behavior, depression and, life satisfaction among female university students. Methods: The subjects for this study were female university students in Seoul, Korea. The data were collected from 151 female university students from August 13, 2019 to August 22, 2019. They were asked to fill out Big Five Inventory- Korean version(BFI-K), The Korean Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(KCES-D), The Korean Version of Eating Attitudes Test-26(KEAT-26), and, Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, T-test, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Result: First, College students’ nervousness among the five personality traits was significantly associated with depression and life satisfaction. Second, College students’ agreeableness among the five personality traits was significantly associated with abnormal eating behavior and life satisfaction. Third, College students’ abnormal eating behaviors were significantly associated with depression. Conclusion: These results suggest that female university students with higher level of nervousness are vulnerable to depression. And, it suggests that female university students with higher level of agreeableness are vulnerable to abnormal eating behavior. The intervention to consider five personality traits may improve mental health among female university students.

        Key Features in the Operation of KSTAR

        <P>The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device is aimed at advanced tokamak (AT) research. Three years have passed since it achieved its first plasma in 2008. Because it is a superconducting machine and is working toward AT research, it has unique features in terms of the machine engineering and operation. The toroidal field (TF) magnet coils are made of Nb<SUB>3</SUB>Sn, which provide high TFs up to 3.5 T, and have been fully tested. The poloidal field (PF) magnet coils, consisting of both Nb<SUB>3</SUB>Sn and NbTi, which have a maximum current of 25 kA in their design, were tested up to 15 kA. A thermal hydraulic analysis is being conducted for PF magnet coil operation. All plasma-facing components (PFCs) are equipped with water cooled graphite tiles and have the capability of being baked up to 350°C. A startup scenario, which considered both the effect of the ferromagnetic material in the cable in conduit conductor jacket of the magnet coils as well as a nonferromagnetic up-down asymmetry in the cryostat structure, was developed and demonstrated its effectiveness by the last two year's reliable operations. Passive stabilizers and in-vessel control coils (IVCCs) are key components to realize AT operation in KSTAR. The segmented IVCC coils were connected to form circular coils for internal vertical control in 2010, and diverted plasmas with high elongation (κ~1.8, δ>;0.6) were achieved. A neutral beam injection (NBI) system was developed aiming at 2 MW, 300 s per ion source which meets the long-pulse requirement of KSTAR. An NBI ion source with a power of 1.7 MW at 100 kV has been commissioned for 10 s. Finally, ELMy H-modes were successfully produced with 1.3-MW NBI power at a plasma current of 0.6 MA in the 2010 campaign. The first H-mode discharge (#4200) in KSTAR was achieved one year earlier than officially planned and was done at B<SUB>T</SUB> = 2 T with I<SUB>p</SUB> = 0.6 MA in a well-balanced double null configuration after boronization on the PFC. Successful operations in the early days of KSTAR including H-mode experiments revealed the capability of advanced and steady-state operation which is essential for the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) and future fusion reactors.</P>

      • Plate assay에 의한 Lactobacillus casei YIP 9018과 Bifidobacterium spp.의 항암효과에 관한 연구

        발효유 제품의 제조에 사용되고 있는 Lactobacillus casei YIT 9018(LC9018)과 장내 유용균인 Bifidobacterium bifidum 그리고 Bifidobacterium OLS1, OLS2, OLS3 및 OLS4의 인체암에 대한 in vitro 항암효과를 알아보기 위하여 plate assay를 실시한 결과 LC 9018의 균체를 동결건조하여 100㎍/㎖의 농도로 암세포에 처리하였을 때 폐암새포인 CALU-3과 SKMES-1, 유방암세포 HS-578T, 임파암세포 RAJI 및 색소암세포 FARROW에 대하여 직접적인 강한 항압활성을 나타내었다. 한편 In vitro 항균활성 조사에서는 공시균주 모두 그람양성균인 Sarcina lutea에 미약한 항균활성을 나타내었다. This study was carried out for investigating antitumor activity against human tumor cell lines of Lactobacillus casei YIT 9018(LC9018) which is in use to fermented milk products and Bifidobacterium spp. which is beneficial intestinal bacteria. Antitumor effects were examined by in vitro soft agar plate assay. Lyophilized mycelia of LC 9018(100㎍/㎖) had direct strong antitumor activity against human tumor cell lines, CALU-3, SKMES-1(lung cancer), HS-578T(breast cancer), RAJI(lymphoma cancer) and FARROW(melanoma cancer), but Bifidobacterium spp. did not show antitumor activity at all. On the other hand, att tested strains in vitro showed very weak antibacterial activety against Sarcina lutea.
