귀리 단백 다당체의 산업적 활용 가능성을 검토하고자 추출온도(40~60℃), 에탄올 농도(0~20%0 및 pH(5~9) 조건을 조합하여 중심합성계획법에 따라 얻은 귀리 추출물의 이화학적 특성을 분석하였다. 귀리 추출물의 수율은 6.4~17.9% 범위로 추출온도는 증가할수록 에탄올 농도는 감소할수록 증가하였고 중성일 때 보다 알칼리성이나 산성일 때 수율은 증가하는 경향을 보였다. β-glucan 및 단백질 함량은 각각 21.8~38.3% 및 23.8~29.0% 범위였고 추출온도는 낮을수록 에탄올농도는 높을수록 증가하는 경향을 보였으나 pH에 의한 영향은 없는 것으로 나타났다. 귀리 추출물 수용액은 저온 및 고농도일수록 점도가 증가하였으나 일반적으로 낮은 범위였으며, 전단속도에 따라 감소하는 의소성을 나타내었다. 본 연구결과 저농도 에탄올을 용매로 사용하여 귀리 추출물중의 단백 다당체 함량비를 조절할 수 있었고, 그 수용액 또한 식품용으로 적합한 유체 특성을 갖는 것으로 나타나 산업적인 활용가치가 높을 것으로 기대된다. To examine the utilization of the soluble proteoglucan in oats as a nutraceutical ingredient, soluble components were extracted from Oat Bran Concentrate (OBC) by varying the experiment factors such as temperature (40∼60℃), ethyl alcohol concentration (0∼20%), and pH (5∼9), and then analzed gor their compositions and viscosity. The total yield of iat solube extracts ranged between 6.4∼17.9 and the contents of β-glucan, protein, lipid, and ash in oat extracts were 21.4∼38.3%, 23.2∼29.0%, 8.3∼11.8%, and 5.9∼7.9%, respectively. The exreaction yield increased with the extraction temperature, but decreased with the alchohol concentration and pH. The β-glucan and protein contents increased with increasing temperature and decreasing ethaol concentration. However, the pH level did not influenced those contents. The viscosity of 2% oat extract solution ranged between 8.6∼83.1 cp at different share rates, showing the pseudo-plastic flow properties. Results suggested that extraction condition could be controlled the purity of β-glucan and protein and applied commercially to the large-scale process.

Accurate staging of lung cancer is essential for defining operability, selecting treatment regimens, predicting survival, and reporting comparable end results. Revisions in stage grouping of the TNM subsets in the International System for Staging Lung Cancer have been adopted by the American Joint Committee on Cancer and the Union Internationale le Cancer at 1996. We compared the previous TNM systems with revised stage grouping rules, and tried to applicate the new size-criteria for metastatic lymph nodes in mediastinum. Twenty-two patients were undergone CT stagings by using three different systems of previous, revised, and modified TNM subsets. Ten patients showed different TNM stage by the revised stage grouping rules and seven patients were altered in lymph node stage by the new size-criteria. Recognition of revised stage grouping rules is very important for treatment plan and predicting the correct prognosis.

N/A Background: Cushing's disease is a hypercortisolic state attributable to hypersecretion of ACTH at pituitary gland Most of these diseases are due to pituitary microadenoma. Selective removal of adenoma by transsphenoidal microsurgery is the treatment of choice for Cushing's disease. We evaluated 25 cases to analyze results of transsphenoidal microsurgery and to identify prognostic factors that may predict successful outcome. Methods: From 1989 to 1995, 25 patients were diagnosed as having Cushing's disease in Seoul National University Hospital. They were underwent pituitary microsurgery and confirmed to have pituitary microadenoma radiologically and pathologically. About these patients. retrospective evaluation was done. Results: The patients consist of 21 females and 4 males and the age was ranged from 23 to 49 years. 19 patients (76%) were judged as immediate remission. The preoperative clinical, hormonal, and radiological characteristics of the remission and failure groups were similiar The patients who were immediate remission were followed from 3 months to 72 months. 3 patients had recurrences(15.8%) at 4, 8, 49 months after operation. The pre and postoperative clinical, hormonal, and radiological characteristics of the long-term remission and recurrence groups were similiar. We could not find any predictable factors of surgical outcome. Conclusion: The first line trearment of Cushing's disease is transsphenoidal microsurgery. However considering relative late and high rate of recurrence of Cushing's disease following curative surgery, careful longterm follow up is mandatory.

This study aimed to analyze the fatigue of forklifts in industrial settings by assessing their stress levels during operation. Strain gauges were affixed to the dynamic components of the forklifts to gather real-time data and enhance the reliability of the analysis. Although monitoring structural loads in harsh testing environments can be challenging, the affixed strain gauges on the dynamic components can provide more precise results and improve the interpretation of data. By creating testing modes that simulate forklift usage environments and performing experiments with selected cargo and driving modes, a comparison of the damage severity of forklift parts under different driving conditions was done. These results can be utilized to forecast the lifespan of forklift parts under extreme driving conditions and assist in the design and optimization of new parts in the future.

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) is a specific variant of exercise-induced anaphylaxis that requires both vigorous physical activity and the ingestion of specific foods. In particular, it is rare occurrence for FDEIA to be associated with meat in Korea. A 15-year-old female had generalized urticaria, dyspnea, severe cough, headache, dizziness, and vomiting after singing and dancing for 1 hour and after ingesting grilled pork. Skin prick tests showed a strong positive reaction to pork, whereas the results of an oral food challenge and exercise provocation tests were negative. However, the exercise provocation test after pork ingestion showed a positive reaction manifested by generalized urticaria, cough, mild dyspnea, and a 23% decreased peak expiratory flow rate. Three allergens to pork (67 kDa, 90 kDa, and 15 kDa) reacted with the patient`s serum on immunoglobulin E immunoblotting. We report a case of pork-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis in a patient who was sensitive to pork.

Since the completion of the genome project of the nematode C. elegans in 1998, functional genomic approaches have been applied to elucidate the gene and protein networks in this model organism. The recent completion of the whole genome of C. briggsae, a close sister species of C. elegans, now makes it possible to employ the comparative genomic approaches for identifying regulatory mechanisms that are conserved in these species and to make more precise annotation of the predicted genes. RNA interference (RNAi) screenings in C. elegans have been performed to screen the whole genome for the genes whose mutations give rise to specific phenotypes of interest. RNAi screens can also be used to identify genes that act genetically together with a gene of interest. Microarray experiments have been very useful in identifying genes that exhibit co-regulated expression profiles in given genetic or environmental conditions. Proteomic approaches also can be applied to the nematode, just as in other species whose genomes are known. With all these functional genomic tools, genetics will still remain an important tool for gene function studies in the post genome era. New breakthroughs in C. elegans biology, such as establishing a feasible gene knockout method, immortalized cell lines, or identifying viruses that can be used as vectors for introducing exogenous gene constructs into the worms, will augment the usage of this small organism for genome-wide biology.
