Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) primarily affects diabetic or immunocompromised patients and typically progresses rapidly, necessitating surgical excision and antifungal therapy with amphotericin B. Large doses of amphotericin B are needed for cure, but it has the risk of causing significant renal toxicity. The recent development of liposomal amphotericin B allows antifungal therapy to be administered with potentially improved efficacy and reduced nephrotoxicity. We have experienced a case of paranasal mucormycosis successfully treated with surgery, liposomal amphotericin B and GM-CSF. A 59-year-old male suffering from diabetes mellitus for 6 years was admitted with pain at left maxillary area. He was diagnosed as mucormycosis after cytologic exam on the necrotic nasal mucosa, which showed typical hyphae. He have had diabetic nephropathy with macroproteinuria and had rapidly rising serum creatinine levels with the amphotericin B treatment: creatinine levels reverted to basal level with the use of liposomal amphotericin B. Despite surgical excision and continued antifungal therapy, his infection was not effectively controlled. Therefore, GM-CSF was administered additionally to improve phagocytic activity of leukocytes. He was finally cured after receiving a combination of aggressive surgery, liposomal amphotericin B and GM-CSF. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed clinical description of the treatment of mucormycosis with liposomal amphotericin B in Korea.

Responses to chemotherapy correlate with the increased dose of chemotherapeutic agents in some cancers, e.g. breast cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, Hodgkin's disease(HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL), then for the improvement of the chemotherapy responsiveness, high-dose chemotherapy(HDCT) was proposed. But, it's application was limited due to complications, especially bone marrow suppression. HDCT and succeeding autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation(APBSCT) was introduced to overcome this problem. This study was designed to determine the clinical pictures including clinical parameters and the responsiveness of HDCT followed by APBSCT in Hanyang University Hospital. Ten patients were enrolled. They were 8 adults (3 breast cancers, 3 multiple myelomas, 1 HD, 1 NHL) and 2 children (1 acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), 1 neuroblastoma). Mobilization chemocherapy(MCT) followed by Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor(G-CSF) was administered to mobilize stem cells from bone marrow to peripheral blood. The stem cells were collected by using CS-3000 and cryopreserved at -196℃ with programmed controlled rate freezer as the mixture with 10% dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO). HDCT was administered and cryopreserved peripheral stem cells were infused on day 0 as planned. Patients' mean age was 41 years old. After induction chemotherapy three patients achieved complete response and 5 partial response. The median time for bone marrow recovery after MCT was 11.5 days for neutrophil(〉500/㎣) and 4.8 days for platelet(〉20,000/㎣). There were three cases of neutropenic fever and one case of gingivitis. After HDCT with APBSCT, one patient was converted partial response to complete response, and one patient achieved complete response after HDCT without induction chemotherapy. The median time for bone marrow recovery was 12.7 days for neutrophil(〉500/㎣) and 14.7 days for platelet(〉20,000/㎣). Eight patients developed neutropenic fever and required systemic antibiotics. Transfusion was required 1.6 pints for packed red cell and 23.4 pints for platelet concentrates. Toxicity consisted mainly of vomiting, diarrhea, and mucositis which were mild. HDCT with APBSCT can be performed safely with minimal complications. For the evaluation of the exact role of HDCT with APBSCT in malignant diseases, further studies are required as a large scale of patients and lung-term follow up.

"Juan1" is a new japonica rice variety of mid-late maturing, tolerance to lodging and adaptable to direct seeding which was developed by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, in 2005. This variety is derived from a cross between Ilpumbyeo, a variety of good-eating quality and high yield, and SR18392-HB683-104. The Juanl has heading date of August 19 at ordinary planting in the middle plain. It has semi-erect plant type with culm length of about 80cm and tolerance to lodging. This variety shows susceptible to blast, bacterial blight, virus diseases and brown planthopper. The milled rice kernels of Juanl are translucent with non-glutinous endosperm, clear in chalkiness and medium short grain. It has also low amylose content of 18.8%, low gelatinization temperature and good palatability. The average milled rice yield of this variety was 5.68 MT/ha at ordinary planting in local adaptability test for three years from 2003 to 2005. Juan! would be highly adaptable to middle plain and mid-eastern coastal region of Korea.

Choi, Jae Gwan,Cho, Chung Il,Choi, Im Soo,Lee, Seung Soo,Choi, Tae Jeong,Cho, Kwang Hyun,Park, Byoung Ho,Choy, Yun Ho Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.4
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters that are to be used for across-herd genetic evaluations of seed stock pigs at GGP level. Performance data with pedigree information collected from swine breeder farms in Korea were provided by Korea Animal Improvement Association (AIAK). Performance data were composed of final body weights at test days and ultrasound measures of back fat thickness (BF), rib eye area (EMA) and retail cut percentage (RCP). Breeds of swine tested were Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc. Days to 90 kg body weight (DAYS90) were estimated with linear function of age and ADG calculated from body weights at test days. Ultrasound measures were taken with A-mode ultrasound scanners by trained technicians. Number of performance records after censoring outliers and keeping records pigs only born from year 2000 were of 78,068 Duroc pigs, 101,821 Landrace pigs and 281,421 Yorkshire pigs. Models included contemporary groups defined by the same herd and the same seasons of births of the same year, which was regarded as fixed along with the effect of sex for all traits and body weight at test day as a linear covariate for ultrasound measures. REML estimation was processed with REMLF90 program. Heritability estimates were 0.40, 0.32, 0.21 0.39 for DAYS90, ADG, BF, EMA, RCP, respectively for Duroc population. Respective heritability estimates for Landrace population were 0.43, 0.41, 0.22, and 0.43 and for Yorkshire population were 0.36, 0.38, 0.22, and 0.42. Genetic correlation coefficients of DAYS90 with BF, EMA, or RCP were estimated to be 0.00 to 0.09, -0.15 to -0.25, 0.22 to 0.28, respectively for three breeds populations. Genetic correlation coefficients estimated between BF and EMA was -0.33 to -0.39. Genetic correlation coefficient estimated between BF and RCP was high and negative (-0.78 to -0.85) but the environmental correlation coefficients between these two traits was medium and negative (near -0.35), which describes a highly correlated genetic response to selection on one or the other of these traits. Genetic Trends of all three breeds tend to be towards bigger EMA or greater RCP and shorter DAYS90 especially from generations born after year 2000.

Im S, Han SH, Choi JH, Lee JH, Ko YJ, Lee JI, Kim HW: Anatomic localization of motor points for the neuromuscular blockade of hand intrinsic muscles involved in thumb-in-palm. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2008;87:703–709. OBJECTIVE:: To determine the location of the motor points and intramuscular branches for the muscles involved in thumb-in-palm and the abductor pollicis brevis muscle, the latter of which, because of its anatomic proximity, may be inadvertently blocked. DESIGN:: Hand intrinsic muscles from 20 fresh cadavers were dissected. The point of nerve entry to the muscle belly and the points where the intramuscular endings were located most proximally and distally were defined in relation to a reference line connecting the hook of hamate and the head of the first metacarpal bone. RESULTS:: We were able to define a region, located from 66.08% ± 8.67% to 70.28% ± 10.62% of the reference line, with the hook of hamate as starting point, where intramuscular endings for the thumb-in-palm muscles were dense and farther from the intramuscular endings for the abductor pollicis brevis. The region around 40% of the reference line was the point where the intramuscular endings were most dense for the abductor pollicis brevis. CONCLUSION:: The results may provide guidelines that could help in localizing the appropriate points for the neuromuscular blockade of thumb-in-palm muscles and, at the same time, help in minimizing the inadvertent block of the abductor pollicis brevis.
