Vol.18 No.-

Cultivating Critical Thinking Skills through Student-centered Discussion

Vol.18 No.19

The current study aimed at investigating how learners cultivate their critical thinking skills through student-centered discussion. This research observed the course of one university located in Korea “Screen English” which was operated with a set of student-centered discussion sessions upon the contents of the film The Intern (2015). Through the qualitative analysis of the learners’ discussion and presentation, this study found that students were willing to take advantage of adopting various critical thinking skills while they participated in a group discussion under their own authority. Students not only dug into the social problems reflected in the film and made a connection to a real society but also suggested supportive evidences for a clear understanding of an issue. Some students went even further and challenged the agency of the owner of the work by criticizing it and provided alternative perspectives for the contents of the film. Based on the findings, the present study concluded that student-centered learning environment could be beneficial for students to widen the field of vision which is accompanied with diverse critical thinking skills.

Phaeophyta Extracts Exhibit Antiviral Activity against Feline Calicivirus

        Choi, Yuri,Kim, Eunjung,Moon, Sunyoung,Choi, Jong-Duck,Lee, Myung-Suk,Kim, Young-Mog The Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Scienc 2014 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.17 No.1

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antiviral activity of Phaeophyta extracts against feline calicivirus (FCV), used as a norovirus surrogate. A bioassay-guided cytotoxicity and virus infectivity assay revealed that methanolic extracts of Phaeophyta possessed significant antiviral activity against FCV. Among them, Eisenia bicyclis extract exhibited the highest antiviral activity against FCV. The 50% effective concentration of the extract ($EC_{50}$) inhibiting FCV viral replication by 50% was $80{\mu}g/mL$. The extract also showed the highest selectivity index, calculated from the ratio of the median cellular cytotoxicity concentration ($CC_{50}$) and $EC_{50}$, indicating antiviral efficacy against FCV. In addition, significant interruption of FCV infection was observed by pretreatment of host Crandall-Reese feline kidney cells with the E. bicyclis extract ($200{\mu}g/mL$) prior to virus infection, in a dosedependent manner.

Feasibility of Emotional Freedom Techniques in Patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: a pilot study

        Choi Yujin,Kim Yunna,Kwon Do-Hyung,Choi Sunyoung,Choi Young-Eun,Ahn Eun Kyoung,Cho Seung-Hun,Kim Hyungjun 대한약침학회 2024 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.27 No.1

Objectives: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent mental health condition, and techniques using sensory stimulation in processing traumatic memories have gained attention. The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a psychotherapy that combines tapping on acupoints with exposure to cognitive reframing. This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of EFT as a treatment for PTSD by answering the following research questions: 1) What is the compliance and completion rate of patients with PTSD with regard to EFT protocol? Is the dropout rate reasonable? 2) Is the effect size of EFT protocol for PTSD sufficient to justify a future trial? Methods: Thirty participants diagnosed with PTSD were recruited. They received weekly EFT sessions for five weeks, in which they repeated a statement acknowledging the problem and accepting themselves while tapping the SI3 acupoint on the side of their hand. PTSD symptoms were evaluated using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) before and after the intervention. Results: Of the 30 PTSD patients (mean age: 34.1 ± 9.1, 80% female), 96.7% showed over 80% compliance to the EFT sessions, and 86.7% completed the entire study process. The mean PCL-5 total score decreased significantly after the intervention, with a large effect size (change from baseline: –14.33 [95% CI: –19.79, –8.86], p < 0.0001, d = 1.06). Conclusion: The study suggests that EFT is a feasible treatment for PTSD, with high session compliance and low dropout rates. The effect size observed in this study supports the need for a larger trial in the future to further investigate EFT as a treatment for PTSD. However, the lack of a control group and the use of a self-rated questionnaire for PTSD symptoms are limi

A root submergence technique for pontic site development in fixed dental prostheses in the maxillary anterior esthetic zone

2015 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.45 No.4

Purpose: This case report discusses the effect of a root submergence technique on preserv¬ing the periodontal tissue at the pontic site of fixed dental prostheses in the maxillary an¬terior aesthetic zone. Methods: Teeth with less than ideal structural support for fixed retainer abutments were decoronated at the crestal bone level. After soft tissue closure, the final fixed dental pros¬theses were placed with the pontics over the submerged root area. Radiographic and clini¬cal observations at the pontic sites were documented. Results: The submerged roots at the pontic sites preserved the surrounding periodontium without any periapical pathology. The gingival contour at the pontic site was maintained in harmony with those of the adjacent teeth, as well as the overall form of the arch. Conclusions: The results of this clinical report indicate that a root submergence technique can be successfully applied in pontic site development with fixed dental prostheses, espe¬cially in the maxillary anterior esthetic zone.

Amelioration of cerebral infarction and improvement of neurological deficit by a Korean herbal medicine, modified Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang.

        Choi, Yookeum,Kim, Seul-Ki,Choi, In-Young,Ju, Chung,Nam, Kung-Woo,Hwang, Sunyoung,Kim, Byung-Woo,Yoon, Min Ji,Won, Moo-Ho,Park, Yong-Ki,Kim, Won-Ki Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain 2011 Journal of pharmacy and pharmacology Vol.63 No.5

<P>Objectives??Modified Bo-Yang-Hwan-O-Tang (mBHT) is an improved herbal formula of BHT, which has been widely used to treat ischaemic stroke in East Asia, by the addition of five herbs having anti-ischaemic properties. In this study, we investigated whether mBHT would reduce cerebral ischaemic injury in rats. Methods??Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to a 90-min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and subsequent 22-h reperfusion. mBHT was administered either intraperitoneally twice 15?in before and 15?in after, or orally once 30?in or 120?in after the onset of MCAO (50 or 200?g/kg each). Key findings??Intraperitoneal administration of mBHT markedly reduced the cerebral infarct size and neurological deficit caused by MCAO/reperfusion. mBHT treatment also significantly improved long-term survival rate after cerebral ischaemic injury. Oral administration of mBHT 30?in after ischaemia also markedly reduced the infarct size after cerebral ischaemia. The anti-ischaemic effect of mBHT was significantly, but not fully, reduced when mBHT-induced hypothermia was abolished. In cultured cortical neurons, we further found that mBHT decreased oxygen-glucose deprivation/re-oxygenation-evoked neuronal injury by inhibiting production of reactive oxygen species, decrease in mitochondrial transmembrane potential, and activation of caspase-3. However, mBHT did not inhibit N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitotoxicity. Conclusions??Taken together, our data suggest that mBHT has multiple anti-ischaemic properties and would be a good therapeutic herbal prescription for the treatment of cerebral ischaemic stroke.</P>

Vol.63 No.4

This study analyzed the 60 years of journals, from the first issue to 2018, of the 〈Korean Journal of Journalism & Communication〉 with two approaches using the metadata of the complete edition of academic articles. First, the descriptive statistics indicated that the journal has 1,276 authors and 2,048 articles. From 2001, the number of articles has increased by threefold than before, but has been decreasing for the last four years. Next, we used Dynamic Topic Modeling (DTM) to understand the developing pattern of the topics by creating DTM of the stored articles every five years in six categories. The result of the field of the study showed that journalism, online journalism, and news-related journalism were frequently found while the cultural study was rare. Second, in the methodology, empirical study was the dominant topics over time and the computational methodology was increasingly used. Third, frame, usage and gratification, and agenda setting theory were extracted as the main theoretical topics, and fourth, in the message study, the effect related topics were dominant. Fifth, in the audience study, political participation, television viewing and teenager-related topics were extracted. Lastly, in the research subject, online, social media, and internet discussion were actively discussed topics, which indicates that this journal was enthusiastic to the online-related research. This study is notable as it suggests a new methodology to analyze the study trend of journal articles by clustering the extracted topics from an algorithm using metadata and machine learning.

Endocrine disruption and consequences of chronic exposure to ibuprofen in Japanese medaka (<i>Oryzias latipes</i>) and freshwater cladocerans <i>Daphnia magna</i> and <i>Moina macrocopa</i>

        Han, Sunyoung,Choi, Kyungho,Kim, Jungkon,Ji, Kyunghee,Kim, Sunmi,Ahn, Byeongwoo,Yun, Junheon,Choi, Kyunghee,Khim, Jong Seong,Zhang, Xiaowei,Giesy, John P. Elsevier 2010 Aquatic toxicology Vol.98 No.3

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Despite frequent detection of ibuprofen in aquatic environments, the hazards associated with long-term exposure to ibuprofen have seldom been investigated. Ibuprofen is suspected of influencing sex steroid hormones through steroidogenic pathways in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In this study, the effect of ibuprofen on sex hormone balance and the associated mechanisms was investigated <I>in vitro</I> by use of H295R cells. We also conducted chronic toxicity tests using freshwater fish, <I>Oryzias latipes</I>, and two freshwater cladocerans, <I>Daphnia magna</I> and <I>Moina macrocopa</I>, for up to 144 and 21d of exposure, respectively. Ibuprofen exposure increased 17β-estradiol (E2) production and aromatase activity in H295R cells. Testosterone (T) production decreased in a dose-dependent manner. For <I>D. magna</I>, the 48h immobilization EC50 was 51.4mg/L and the 21d reproduction NOEC was <1.23mg/L; for <I>M. macrocopa</I>, the 48h immobilization EC50 was 72.6mg/L and the 7d reproduction NOEC was 25mg/L. For <I>O. latipes</I>, 120d survival NOEC was 0.0001mg/L. In addition, ibuprofen affected several endpoints related to reproduction of the fish, including induction of vitellogenin in male fish, fewer broods per pair, and more eggs per brood. Parental exposure to as low as 0.0001mg/L ibuprofen delayed hatching of eggs even when they were transferred to and cultured in clean water. Delayed hatching is environmentally relevant because this may increase the risk of being predated. For <I>O. latipes</I>, the acute-to-chronic ratio of ibuprofen was estimated to be greater than 1000. Overall, relatively high acute-to-chronic ratio and observation of reproduction damage in medaka fish at environmentally relevant ranges of ibuprofen warrant the need for further studies to elucidate potential ecological consequences of ibuprofen contamination in the aquatic environment.</P>
