        Effects of needleless intradermal injection of multivalent foot and mouth disease vaccine on granuloma formation at neck region in fattening pigs

        The abnormal meat could caused by abscess, fibrosis and granuloma in the region of the neck by the adverse effect of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination practice for Korean swine. After FMD vaccination was implemented in 2010, the number of incidences of abnormal meat has been increasing. In this study, it was evaluated whether needless intradermal injection (NII) of FMD vaccine reduces abnormal meat at the injection site in comparison to conventional intramuscular injection (IM). In addition, the onset of humoral immunity was analyzed in order to see if NII of this vaccine is able to mount comparable antibody response with IM. This study was carried out in four Korean pig farms. The O-type FMD vaccine was implemented via NII at three farms and the control group was vaccinated via IM. Antibody titers were compared from the serum samples taken from 10 random pigs at age of 8, 12, 16 and 22~24 weeks of age. The O+A type FMD vaccine was also compared with the same protocol. When test animals were slaughtered, incidence, type and size of abnormal meat were recorded. The results of this study showed that the antibody titers between intradermal and intramuscular group were similar but a significant difference in the incidence of abnormal meat formation was observed between two groups (p < 0.05). In summary, needless intradermal injection of FMD vaccination was proven to be effective for the onset of humoral immunity and reducing abnormal meat formation.

        농촌지역 여성고령자의 현미덤벨체조가 체조성, 체력 및 식습관에 미치는 영향

        The present study evaluated the possibility of dumbbell exercise as to improve the physical fitness and the health starus of old people in rural area. Although eighty seven volunteers of old women (over 64) living in Seonsan, Gumi city were subjected, twenty of them were attended the whole program for 6 months and the data from the twenty was analysed in this study. The results were drawn out from comparison of the body constitutuion, the physical strength, the medical aspectrs, and the questionaires of before and after this program. They showed increased physical fithess tested by grip strength (left), bar gripping reaction time, standing trunk flexibility, on foot standing test through dumbbell exercise for 6 months. Questionaire revealed the betterment of dietary pattem during this program. In the light of in these results, it is possible to conclude that dumbbell exercise had improved the basic physical condition and the health status through the increasement of physical fitness and dietary pattem change. Therefore, dumbbell exercise would be a useful program for the old people in reual area to improved their health status.

      • A preliminary study in melasma following INMODE forma procedure

        Background: Melasma is a common hypermelanosis that frequently appears on the face. In recent studies, it is suggested that dermal structural alteration, including solar elastosis and basement membrane disruption, may have an important role in the pathogenesis of melasma. Forma device (InMode Inc, Richmond Hill, ON, Canada, North America) is a radiofrequency dermal heating device used on facial wrinkles and rhytides. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Forma device on melasma in a small group of volunteers. Methods: All volunteers were treated 4 times at 3 weeks intervals. Every visit, melanin index and erythema index was measured to assess the improvement in hyperpigmentation and erythema. Clinical photos were evaluated to estimate the degree of skin changes. Results: Clinical and instrumental evaluation showed that melasma improved after INMODE forma treatment. Conclusion: We suggest that treatment with Forma device may have beneficial effects on melasma by dermal remodeling and direct heat delivery on melanocytes.

        우황청심원 관련 최근 연구 동향 : 국내 논문에 대한 고찰

        Objectives : Woohwangchungsim-won has been used for acute diseases such as cerebrovascular disease (stroke), heart disease. The aim of this study was to determine the effects, significance & necessity of Woohwangchungsim-won in acute stages of these disease by reviewing Korean articles about Woohwangchungsim-won. Methods : Article searches were performed on 8 major Korean web article search engine from January 1980 to August 2010. There were no restrictions on the types of publication, including grey articles. Results : Forty-three articles were included. Twenty one were efficacy tests, thirteen were comparative efficacy tests, eight were toxicity tests, and one was new method development. Eighteen articles were multicenter studies and twenty five were single center studies. Thirty two articles were animal testing, only ten articles were clinical articles. Thirty seven articles presented the composition and quantity of Woohwangchungsim-won, but six did not. Conclusions : The results of Korean articles about Woohwangchungsim-won can not strongly support the effects, significance & necessity of Woohwangchungsim-won. More rigorous studies are required for determination of the effects of Woohwangchungsim-won.

      • The Change of Skeletal Muscle Mass Is Associated with Hepatic Steatosis in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

        Aims: We aimed to investigate the association between the change of muscle mass and change of fibrosis and steatosis in NAFLD patients. Methods: We analyzed 2,893 NAFLD subjects who had health check-up more than twice in St. Vincent’s Hospital between November 2009 and December 2017. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasound, and appendicular muscle mass (ASM) was assessed by Inbody 720, and Sarcopenia index was calculated as ASM divided by weight (SI%) and ASM divided by body mass index (SI-BMI). Non-invasive markers were used to evaluate the severity of hepatic fibrosis and steatosis; NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS), Fibrosis-4 (Fib-4) score, and Forn’s index for fibrosis, and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and fatty liver index (FLI) for steatosis. Results: The mean age was 47.3±10.4 years, and 1956 subjects (67.6%) were male. Diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome were more prevalent in sarcopenic subjects (P<0.01), and non-invasive fibrosis and steatosis markers were higher in sarcopenic subjects (P< 0.01). The mean interval between two health check-up was 39.8±21.9 months. There was no significant association between the change of NFS, Fib-4, and Forn’s index and the change of SI% and SI-BMI (all P >0.1). However, the changes of HIS and FLI were significantly associated with the change of SI% and SI-BMI (all P<0.01). Multivariate logistic analysis demonstrated the independent association between the change of skeletal muscle mass and the changes of non-invasive steatosis markers after adjusting for other confounding factors (all P< 0.001). However, the changes of non-invasive fibrosis markers did not show an independent association with the change of appendicular muscle mass after adjusting for other confounders (all P >0.1) Conclusions: The change of muscle mass is strongly associated with the change of hepatic steatosis, but not the change of fibrosis.

        Background: Lupeol, a natural pentacyclic triterpene, is shown to anti-infl ammatory effect but its role in colitis has not been investigated. This study evaluated the effects of lupeol on the p38-MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathways and on experimental colitis. Methods: The human intestinal epithelial cell (IEC)-line COLO 205 and the murine macrophage cell-line RAW264.7 were prepared and subsequently stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) alone or LPS plus various dose of lupeol. The secretion of IL-8from COLO 205 cell-line was measured by ELISA and the productions of TNF-a, IL-6 and IL-12 from RAW 264.7 cell-line were also qualifi ed by ELISA. The effects of lupeol on IκBa and p38-MAPK phosphorylation, which regulate the production of pro-in- fl ammatory cytokines, were examined by western blotting. In in vivo studies, dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis in wild-type mice and chronic colitis in IL- 10-/- mice were treated with or without lupeol. Colitis was quantifi ed by histologic scoring.Results: Lupeol signifi cantly inhibited LPS-induced IκBa and p38-MAPK phosphorylation. The productions of proinfl ammatory cytokines in both IEC and macrophages were also inhibited with lupeol pretreatment. The administration of lupeol signifi cantly reduced the severity of colitis, as assessed based on histology in the both murine colitis models. Conclusions: Lupeol may block the p38-MAPK/IκBa phosphorylation, inhibit the activation of IECs and macrophages, and attenuate experimental murine colitis. These fi ndings suggest that lupeol is a potential therapeutic agent for infl ammatory bowel diseases.

        Primary Malignant Pericardial Mesothelioma Presenting as Acute Pericarditis

        We report on a 21-year-old man with fever, dyspnea, and pleuritic chest pain. An electrocardiography showed ST elevation in multiple lead and thoracic echocardiography revealed moderate pericardial effusion. He was initially diagnosed with acute pericarditis,and treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicines with clinical and laboratory improvement. After 1 month of medication, his symptoms recurred. An echocardiography showed constrictive physiology and the patient was treated with steroid on the top of current medication. The patient had been well for 7 months until dyspnea and edema developed, when an echocardiography showed marked increased pericardial thickness and constriction. Pericardial biopsy was performed and primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma was diagnosed. Malignancy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pericarditis.

      • Strength durability of gellan gum biopolymer-treated Korean sand with cyclic wetting and drying

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Various biological approaches recently have been explored as alternative environmentally-friendly soil improvement strategies in the fields of construction and geotechnical engineering, with the aim of reducing the use of high greenhouse gas emitting construction binders such as cement. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of microbial biopolymers in soil improvement. However, there are still concerns about the durability and serviceability of biopolymer treated soils, resulting from the biodegradation and hydrolysis behaviors of the biologically produced compounds. In this study, the strength and durability of gellan gum biopolymer treated <I>Jumunjin</I> sand (standard sand of the Republic of Korea) was evaluated under cyclic wetting and drying. The results obtained indicate that the cyclic wetting and drying of gellan gum-treated sands results in a gradual degradation of strength, due to the dissociation of the gellan gum monomers under wetting and imperfect recomposition during re-drying, with an approximately 30% strength reduction over 10 cycles. However, a certain degree of strength recovery and resistance was observed even after numerous cycles, indicating that gellan gum-treated soils can potentially be applied for temporary or medium-term purposes in practical construction.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Strength durability of gellan gum biopolymer is verified in this study. </LI> <LI> Wetting and drying cycles are performed on gellan gum-treated sand. </LI> <LI> Unconfined compressive strength was measured with cyclic wetting and drying. </LI> <LI> Gellan gum-treated sand shows hysteretic strength path along wetting-drying cycles. </LI> <LI> Dry strength remains 80% even after severe wetting-drying cycles. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Characterization of H460R, a Radioresistant Human Lung Cancer Cell Line, and Involvement of Syntrophin Beta 2 (SNTB2) in Radioresistance

        A radioresistant cell line was established by fractionated ionizing radiation (IR) and assessed by a clonogenic assay, flow cytometry, and Western blot analysis, as well as zymography and a wound healing assay. Microarray was performed to profile global expression and to search for differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in response to IR. H460R cells demonstrated increased cell scattering and acidic vesicular organelles compared with parental cells. Concomitantly, H460R cells showed characteristics of increased migration and matrix metalloproteinase activity. In addition, H460R cells were resistant to IR, exhibiting reduced expression levels of ionizing responsive proteins (p-p53 and ${\gamma}$-H2AX); apoptosis-related molecules, such as cleaved poly(ADP ribose) polymerase; and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related molecules, such as glucose-regulated protein (GRP78) and C/EBP-homologous protein compared with parental cells, whereas the expression of anti-apoptotic X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein was increased. Among DEGs, syntrophin beta 2 (SNTB2) significantly increased in H460R cells in response to IR. Knockdown of SNTB2 by siRNA was more sensitive than the control after IR exposure in H460, H460R, and H1299 cells. Our study suggests that H460R cells have differential properties, including cell morphology, potential for metastasis, and resistance to IR, compared with parental cells. In addition, SNTB2 may play an important role in radioresistance. H460R cells could be helpful in in vitro systems for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of and discovering drugs to overcome radioresistance in lung cancer therapy.
