        Gene Expression of NeuroD/BETA2 during Development of the Mouse Central Nervous System

        basic helix-loop-helix 전사인자 (transcription factor)에 속하는 NeuroD/BETA2 유전자는 신경형성과정 중 종말분화에 중요한 기능을 하는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 신경계의 발생 및 분화과정에서 NeuroD/BETA2 유전자의 기능을 알기 위해서 본 연구에서는 생쥐의 배자발생과정, 출생초기 및 성숙한 생쥐를 대상으로 in situ hybridization방법을 이용하여 유전자의 발현 양상을 조사하였다. NeuroD/BETA2 유전자는 발생중인 생쥐의 신경계에서 매우 높게 발현되었다. 출생 초기에 NeuroD/BETA2 유전자는 소뇌 와 해마에서 시간이 경과할수록 지속적으로 증가하는 발현양상을 보여주었고 성숙 후에도 비교적 안정한 상태로 발현되었다. 출생 전 NeuroD/BETA2 유전자는 배자발생과정 동안 뇌실밑층의 분열을 마친 세포에서 발현되었다. 이러한 결과는 NeuroD/BETA2 유전자가 신경형성과정 중 종말분화과정에 중요한 역할을 담당한다는 사실을 확인시켜 준다. NeuroD/BETA2, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, has been known to play a role in terminal differentiation during neurogenesis. To gain further insight into the function of NeuroD/BETA2 in the nervous system development, we examined the expression pattern of NeuroD/BETA2 during embryonic and postnatal development by in situ hybridization. Dynamic changes of NeuroD/BETA2 expression were observed in the developing nervous system. Gene expression of the NeuroD/BETA2 in developing cerebellum and hippocampus increased during the embryonic stages and persisted throughout postnatal development and remained at a stable level in the adult brain. NeuroD/ BETA2 expression was detected in postmitotic cells in the subventricular zone of the cerebrum during embryogenesis. This observation confirms that NeuroD/BETA2 may have a role in terminal differentiation during neurogenesis.

        피라미(Zacco platypus)의 정자형성과정에 관한 미세구조적 연구

        The spermatogenesis of pale chub (Zacco platypus) was investigated morphologically. The testis of pale chub contained numerous testicular sacs. These testicular sacs were bounded on neighboring sacs by single layer of squamous cells. Also, differentiated sperms were filled in the sacs. In the stage of spermatogonium, the germ cells had a large nucleus and a distinct nucleolus, and mitochondrial development was prominent. In the primary and secondary spermatogonia, these cells had a round electron-dense nucleus, reduced cytoplasm, and mitochondria were congregated in the side of cytoplasm. The highly condensed chromatin of sperms was electron-dense, the acrosome was not found in the head of the sperm and a motile flagellum consisted of an axoneme with a typical 9+2 pattern of microtubules.

        4D Lookup Table Interpolating을 이용한 단위 전지 방전 시험 기반 열전지 성능 예측

        For comparison to the Li-ion battery, evaluating a thermal battery must consider additional variables. The first one is the temperature difference between the battery and its unit cell. Thermal batteries and their unit cells have a temperature difference that is caused by the thermal battery activation mechanism and its shape. The second variable is the electrochemical reaction steps. Most Li-ion batteries have a constant electrochemical reaction at the electrode, and battery voltage is affected when the concentration of Li ions is changed. However, a thermal battery has several steps in its electrochemical reaction, and each step has a different potential. In this study, we used unit cell discharge tests based on interpolating a 4D lookup table to estimate the performance of a thermal battery. From the test results, we derived an estimation algorithm by interpolating the table, which is queried from specified profile groups. As a result, we found less than a 5 percent difference between estimation and experiment at the 1.3 V cut-off time.

        태국 북부 아카족, 라후족의 지문과 손바닥문의 형태

        태국 북부의 산악지방에 살고 있는 아카족과 라후족은 한국인과 비슷한 풍습이 있으며 라후족에서는 한국인을 포함한 몇몇 민족이 가지고 있는 HLA - B59 인자가 발견된 바 있다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 아카족(남자 107명 여자 114명)과 라후족(남자 92명 여자 101명)을 대상으로 지문과 손바닥문의 형태를 정성적인 방법으로 조사하고 이를 한국인을 포함한 여러 민족과 비교하여 체질인류학적 연관성을 밝히고자 하였다. 결과는 다음과 같았다. 아카족과 라후족의 지문은 소용돌이형(아카족 57.8% 라후족 58.1%)이 가장 많았고 그 다음은 척골쪽고리형(아카족 37.9% 라후족 37.9%)이었으며 활형(아카족 2.5% 라후족 2.8%) 과 요골쪽고리형 ( 아카족 1.70% 라후족 1.2%)은 적은 빈도로 나타났다. 아카족과 라후족의 손바닥문은 9-7-5형(아카족 32.3% 라후족 21.3%)과 7-5-5형(아카족 25.4% 21.3%)이 가장 많았고 그 다음은 11-0-7형(아카족 2.0% 라후족 11.3%) 9-0-5형(아카족 1.5% 라후족 10.0%) 11-9-7형(아카족 6.0% 라후족 5.7%) 7-5-4형(아카족 7.0% 라후족 2.2%)의 순이었다. 아카족 라후족의 지문과 손바닥문의 형태는 백인 흑인 및 동양인 중 어느 하나에 속하지 않았으나 백인 또는 혹인 보다는 동양인에 가까웠고 동양 인 중에서는 한국인이나 일본인보다 중국인에 더 가까웠다.

        열전지의 전해질은 용융염이 주성분이라서, 용융염 전지라고도 불린다. 용융염 전해질은 평소에는 전기가 흐르지 않는 고체이지만, 화약 열원에 의해 녹으면 탁월한 이온 전도체가 된다. 따라서 열전지는 일종의 `화약 전지`이다. 화약의 열에너지로 용융염 전해질을 녹여야만 비로소 작동하게 되기 때문이다. 열전지에 사용되는 파이로테크닉 부품은 착화기, 점화스트립, 열원이 있다. 이들 파이로테크닉 부품의 신뢰성은 열전지의 안전성은 물론 성능에도 큰 영향을 미친다. 본 논문에서 열전지가 요구하는 파이로테크닉 성능을 중심으로 부품 개발 연구결과를 정리하였다. Thermal batteries are also called molten-salt batteries as the main composition of electrolyte is molten salt. The molten-salt electrolyte is a solid that does not conduct electricity at room temperature, but when it is melted by the pyrotechnic heat source, it becomes an excellent ion conductor. Thermal battery is a kind of pyrotechnic battery because it operates only when the solid electrolyte is melted by the heat energy of pyrotechnic materials. Pyrotechnic components used in a thermal battery include heat sources, fuse strips, and an igniter. The reliability of these pyrotechnic components greatly affects the safety and performance of the battery. This paper summarizes the results of the research focusing on the pyrotechnic devices and their performance required by thermal batteries.

        A radiation recall reaction refers to an inflammatory reaction at previous irradiated areas subsequent to the administration of a variety of pharmacological agents. The skin is the major site of radiation recall reactons with the muscle and internal organs being less commonly affected. These reactions usually occur days to weeks after exposure to the causative agents. We report a case of gemcitabine-induced radiation recall dermato-myositis the developed in a female patient with a metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. She had received a palliative radiation therapy of 3900 cGy to the metastatic lesion on the femur shaft prior to chemotherapy. The pain, swelling and erythema of the left thigh resolved after the cessation of gemcitabine and the use of a systemic steroid. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2006; 61: 167-170)

        Thermal batteries are also called molten-salt batteries as the electrolyte is mainly composed of molten salt. The molten-salt electrolyte is a solid that does not conduct electricity at room temperature, but when it is melted by a pyrotechnic heat source, it becomes an excellent ionic conductor. Thermal batteries are a kind of pyrotechnic battery because they operate only when the solid electrolyte is melted by the heat energy provided by pyrotechnic materials. Pyrotechnic components used in a thermal battery include heat sources, fuse strips, and an igniter. The reliability of these pyrotechnic components critically affects the reliability and performance of the battery that must supply electricity stably to guided munitions even under extreme environmental conditions. Different igniter types offer different advantages: notch-type igniters offer improved ignition probability, whereas film-type igniters offer improved safety. The addition of metal oxides to the heat paper could improve the burn rate, and the ignition reliability could be greatly improved by using it with a flame igniter at the same time. Using a two-step reduction process, high-purity Fe particles in coral form can be safely obtained.

        양성 단일 갑상선 결절의 갑상선 호르몬 억제요법

        Background: Clinically apparent thyroid nodule is a very common disease in adults. Patients are often treated with thyroxine in order to reduce the size of the nodule, but the efficacy of thyroxine-suppressive therapy with thyroxine remains uncertain. We investigated the efficacy of thyroxine-suppressive therapy and the hormonal characteristics during thyroxine therapy to find out whether such measurement could be used to determine the effectiveness of this therapy in patients with benign solitary thyroid nodule proved by aspiration biopsy. Methods: In this study, 54 patients were randomly assigned to receive L-thyroxine(Group I, n=24) or placebo(GroupII, n=30) for 1 year. High resolution ultrasonography(10MHz) was used to measure the size of the nodules at six month intervals. Thyroid hormones and thyroglobulin assay and FNA(fine needle aspiration) was done at the same time. The dose of thyroxine was 200ug/day. Patients were followed at 6 month intervals. Results: The results were as follows: 1) 13(54.1%) out of 24 Group I patients after adequate TSH suppression had a statistically significant reduction of nodule size and before-to-after nodule volume ratios were significantly different between the Group I and Group II patients. 2) In the responders among Group I patients, the before-to-after therapy ratio of the nodule volume was not related to the pretreatment nodule size, thyroid hormones and thyroglobulin levels. Conclusion: Thus we concluded that an adequate suppressive dose of L-thyroxine significantly altered the volume of the benign solitary thyroid nodules 12 months later.
