Syllable Structure Constraints and the Perception of Biconsonantal Clusters by Korean EFL Learners

        이신숙 한국영어영문학회 2009 영어 영문학 Vol.55 No.6

This study examined the impact of sonority profiles, positional differences and L2 proficiency on Korean EFL learners’ perception of English biconsonantal clusters, using nonce words. The overall results showed that major predictions of the sonority-based typological markedness on consonant clusters were supported, as obstruent plus sonorant and sonorant plus obstruent sequences were better perceived than obstruent only or sonorant only sequences. Yet, some consonant clusters did not show a preference for sonority profiles. Positional effects were also confirmed, as word-initial biconsonantal clusters were better perceived than wordfinal ones across all the participant groups. Participants’ English proficiency turned out to be also important in the perception of consonant clusters, since university students’ mean rate of accuracy was highest, followed by that of high school students, which in turn followed by that of middle school students. Further, the effects of other factors like frequency and stimuli on speech perception were also addressed, along with some implications for future research. The influence of L2 experience on the perception of nonnative phonemic contrasts

        이신숙 한국음운론학회 2010 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.16 No.1

This study investigated early Korean L2/EFL learners’ perception of English fricative sounds in order to find out whether learners’ different L2 experience influenced the way fricatives were perceived. For this purpose, three groups of children with different L2 experience took part in the study: 20 Korean EFL students, 21 bilingual returnees currently enrolled in an English-immersion program and 19 English-dominant bilinguals residing in the U.S. Their mean age was 9. They took a discrimination test with 48 English nonce words containing voiceless fricatives with four places of articulation (labiodental /f/, interdental /θ/, alveolar /s/, alveopalatal /š/) before the front vowel /i/ and back vowels /□/ and /a/ (e.g., identical pairs: findert-findert, farbin-farbin; non-identical pairs: findert-thindert, farbin-tharbin). The results showed that perception of fricative sounds was affected by participants’ different English-language experience. This is because EFL students outperformed Returnees or English-dominant bilinguals on discriminating non-identical stimuli but the latter groups were almost native-like in discriminating identical stimuli. The results also revealed that overall participants with more L2 experience surpassed those with less L2 experience in discrimination and that identical stimuli were better perceived than non-identical ones (84.6% vs. 62.4%). Moreover, Returnees and English-dominant bilinguals had much difficulty distinguishing the labiodental /f/ from the interdental /θ/ and also the interdental /θ/ from the alveolar /s/. In contrast, Korean EFL students had trouble in perceiving identical alveopalatal /š/ vs. alveopalatal /š/ pairs (e.g., sholtem-sholtem), even though they were better than Returnees and English-dominant bilinguals in discriminating between the labiodental /f/ and the interdental /θ/ and also between the interdental /θ/ and the alveolar /s/. Accordingly, the results are consistent with the hypothesis that perception of nonnative phonemic contrasts is influenced by learners’ L1/L2 experience. Further, there was a back vowel advantage, as some of the target sounds were discriminated better before back vowels than before front vowels. In addition, implications of the results are discussed in terms of L2 speech perception models (Flege 1995, Best 1995, Best and Tyler 2007).

유.무배우 여자노인의 연령, 경제상태, 신체만족도에 따른 생활만족도

        이신숙,Lee, Shin-Sook 한국가정관리학회 2009 가정과삶의질연구 Vol.27 No.6

The subject of this study is a cohort of elderly women who are older than 60 years of age and reside S city in and Jeonnam. The sample size of this study is 386. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, reliability, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression analysis through the SAS package program. The major study result were as follows. First, the physical satisfaction of elderly women is low, and the life satisfaction of the married group is higher than for the widowed group. Second, according to the results. For the women from the married group, the effect were from economic state, age, and physical satisfaction. There were also significant interaction effects according to economic state$\times$physical satisfaction, age$\times$economic state$\times$physical satisfaction, and age$\times$physical satisfaction. As for women from the widowed group, the effect were from physical satisfaction, economic state, and age. There were also significant interaction effects according to economic state$\times$physical satisfaction, age$\times$physical satisfaction, age$\times$economic state$\times$physical satisfaction, and age$\times$economic state. Fourth, the married group gave significance to life satisfaction, economic state, physical satisfaction, and age. The group of widows gave significance to life satisfaction, physical satisfaction, economic state, and age. The results of this study suggest that we should be concerned about the physical satisfaction of older women and should foster a social atmosphere to establish a positive image of elderly women.

Estimating Korean EFL listeners’ perception of English vowels with reference to cross-language labelling

        이신숙,신동진 한국음운론학회 2015 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.21 No.2

This paper explores whether Korean EFL listeners' perception of English vowels and their English vowel category development can be estimated from cross-language labelling between English and Korean. The paper also investigates whether cross-language labelling makes different predictions for General American English (GAE) vowels and British English (Received Pronunciation, RP) vowels, given that vowel category variation exists between the two accents. Thirty-six university students in Seoul completed cross-language labelling and English vowel identification. Fit indices were calculated based on cross-language labelling for both GAE and RP vowels in order to answer the questions posed. Specifically, the paper tested the assumption of the Speech Learning Model (SLM) that L2 category development is closely related to the perceived phonetic distance between L1 and L2 sounds by calculating fit indices. The results reveal that the fit indices computed had limitations in accounting for the identification accuracy of L2 vowels. The fit indices also made similar predictions for GAE and RP vowels, but there were accent and vowel category variations between GAE and RP. Thus, the overall results suggest that L2 vowel perception or L2 vowel category learning depends on factors such as L2 learners’ target language accent and their overall interlanguage phonological system, as well as the perceived phonetic distance between an L2 sound and its closest L1 counterpart.

The Effect of Dialect Experience and Talker Variation on Korean EFL Listeners’ English Vowel Identification

        이신숙,강재구,신동진,남호성 한국외국어대학교 외국어교육연구소 2019 외국어교육연구 Vol.33 No.4

The study examines whether Korean EFL listeners’ identification of English vowels might vary according to the listeners’ different levels of experience with two English regional dialects (General American English [GAE], Standard Southern British English [SSBE]) and also by talker variation (native English talkers, native Korean talkers, i.e., Interlanguage Speech Intelligibility Benefit (ISIB)-talker effects). An English vowel identification test was administered to native Korean listeners, in which 12 English vowels were produced by native English and native Korean talkers of GAE and SSBE. The results indicate thatthe Korean listeners’ experience with the two regional dialects had a great impact on the identification accuracy of English vowels, but the Korean listeners’ English proficiency did not affect their identification accuracy. ISIB-talker effects were observed only for GAE but not for SSBE, especially for the English vowels with similar counterparts in Korean. Further, vowel confusion matrices indicate that the Korean listeners showed low accuracy for the characteristic SSBE vowels (bot, Burt, Bart, and bat) and they also exhibited diverse error patterns for the vowels. The findings of the study are discussed in light of pedagogical implications for L2 learning.

The Perceptual Interaction between Schwa Deletion and English Phonotactic Constraints

        이신숙 한국언어학회 2011 언어 Vol.36 No.3

Lee, Shinsook. 2011. The Perceptual Interaction between Schwa Deletion and English Phonotactic Constraints. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-3, 699-733. This study explored the perceptual interaction between schwa deletion and English phonotactic constraints by conducting syllable-count experiments on native English speakers and Korean and Japanese learners of English, using English nonce word stimuli. The results of both response accuracy and latency showed that English speakers were abel to discriminate between legal and illegal onset clusters in English resulting from schwa deletion, regardless of the number of the syllables of the stimuli. However, Korean and Japanese learners of English were not sensitive to English phonotactic constraints on legal vs. illegal onset sequences created by schwa deletion. Similarly, English speakers' perception of illegal onsets resulting from schwa deletion conformed to the predictions of the sonority-based onset markedness in that their perception of onsets of sonority rises was more accurate and faster than sonority levels and falls in order. On the contrary, Korean and Japanese learners of English displayed a partial sensitivity to the onset-markedness, as the mean accuracy of sonority plateaus was higher than that of sonority rises and as the number of the syllables of the stimulus items also affected the general results. Overall, the results indicate that English phonotactic restrictions as well as the sonority-driven onset-markedness play a role in the perception of onset sequences resulting from schwa deletion. The implications of the results for speech perception, markedness, and lexical representation were further discussed. (Korea University)
