Foreign Exchange Rate Uncertainty in Korea
이서진 대외경제정책연구원 2020 East Asian Economic Review Vol.24 No.2
Applying Ismailov and Rossi (2018), I newly construct the Korea FX uncertainty based on the density distribution of historical forecast errors. This uncertainty index properly captures the rare but significant events in the Korean currency market and provides information distinct from other uncertainty measures in recent studies. I show that 1) FX uncertainty arising from unexpected depreciation has a stronger impact on Korea- U.S. exchange rates and that 2) macro variables, such as capital flows or interest rate differentials, have predictive ability regarding Korea FX uncertainty for short horizons. These findings enable us to predict the events of sudden currency crashes and understand the Korea-U.S. exchange rate dynamics.
Neuropathic Pain Model of Peripheral Neuropathies Mediated by Mutations of Glycyl-tRNA Synthetase
이서진,서아정,박병선,조현우,허영범 대한의학회 2014 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.29 No.8
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common inherited motor and sensoryneuropathy. Previous studies have found that, according to CMT patients, neuropathicpain is an occasional symptom of CMT. However, neuropathic pain is not considered to bea significant symptom associated with CMT and, as a result, no studies have investigatedthe pathophysiology underlying neuropathic pain in this disorder. Thus, the first animalmodel of neuropathic pain was developed by our laboratory using an adenovirus vectorsystem to study neuropathic pain in CMT. To this end, glycyl-tRNA synthetase (GARS)fusion proteins with a FLAG-tag (wild type [WT], L129P and G240R mutants) wereexpressed in spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons using adenovirus vectors. It is known that GARS mutants induce GARS axonopathies, including CMT type 2D(CMT2D) and distal spinal muscular atrophy type V (dSMA-V). Additionally, themorphological phenotypes of neuropathic pain in this animal model of GARS-induced painwere assessed using several possible markers of pain (Iba1, pERK1/2) or a marker of injuredneurons (ATF3). These results suggest that this animal model of CMT using an adenovirusmay provide information regarding CMT as well as a useful strategy for the treatment ofneuropathic pain.

Corn, alongside rice and wheat, is a crucial food resource that substantially contributes to human sustenance. The United States stands as the global leader in its production and exportation. It is noteworthy that advancements in biotechnology and agricultural science have bolstered U.S. corn productivity. Although data analysis does not directly enhance agricultural technology, previous studies have underscored its considerable potential in augmenting yield. Nonetheless, limited studies have examined a spatial regression model that integrates diverse satellite and meteorological data with spatial dependency to predict U.S. corn yield. This study aims to fill this gap by constructing a spatial regression model that incorporates 2020 U.S. corn yield data, satellite information, and assorted weather data. The resultant predictive model can potentially enhance corn yield and inspire the creation of similar yield prediction models for other crops like soybeans. Moreover, this study provides a simplified approach to include temporally-measured satellite information in the spatial regression model, thereby extending the scope for future studies. The effectiveness of the spatial regression model was validated against the linear regression model. Our study also confirmed spatial autocorrelation through the spatial lag regression mode and spatial error regression model, subsequently leading to the establishment of a prediction model. Among these models, the spatial lag regression model demonstrated superior performance.

Tigers are one of the most endangered species over the world and protected internationally or locally. However, they are still traded illegally for the Traditional East Asia Medicine or souvenirs / mementos as well as fake products. In the present study, to identify the species of the specimen known as the tiger's genitalia that was sold for mementos in China, two approaches of genetic tools and morphological comparisons were applied. On the basis of the entire sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1,140 bp), the result of nucleotide comparisons showed that the specimen examined here is matched with banteng, Bos javanicus (Identities = 1,138/1,140; 99%). In addition, the examination of external morphological characters revealed that the genitalia of the specimen is much more similar to the one of cows, not to tigers. The outcomes highlighted that there are still some fake products of tigers traded in market and molecular genetic tools could help identifying species of wildlife products.
