초등학교 담임교사의 상담자로서 역할지각 및 수행실태와 아동의 기대 분석

        서주희,김양현,Seo, Ju-Hee,Kim, Yang-Hyun 한국초등상담교육학회 2006 초등상담연구 Vol.5 No.1

The objective of this study is to conduct survey analyses of the role perception and performance of homeroom teachers in elementary schools in Seoul as well as their students' expectations for teachers' role as counsellors. The study also aims to analyze the causes behind the lackluster performance, to provide assistance in teachers' counselling and guidance activities and collect basic data for providing a plausible orientation for elementary school counselling. Research topics for achieving these study objectives are as follows. First, what is the status quo of counselling between elementary school students and teachers? Second, what is the role perception of elementary school homeroom teachers as counsellors and their current level of performance? Third, what are the differences in students' expectations for homeroom teachers' role as counsellors according to students' environmental variables such as gender and grade? Fourth, what are the discrepancies between the roles perception and performance of elementary school homeroom teachers and role expectation of students for homeroom teachers' role as counsellors? In order to answer these questions, surveys were conducted for 229 teachers and 385 students in grades 4, 5 and 6 in 11 elementary schools in Seoul, and the results were analyzed. The questionnaires used for this study were modified and supplemented according to the research objectives based on survey questions released by Gyung-Beom Lee(1989), Hak-Soo Lee(2001) and Gi-Nam Gwon(2005). Statistical analyses were peformed using the SPSS for Windows 10.0 program. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, most elementary school homeroom teachers were involved in counselling activities, and about half of them were providing counselling once a month or less. The classroom was the primary location of counselling, and more than half of the surveyed teachers were dissatisfied with their counselling activities. The teachers cited overwhelming teaching hours and excessive work as the factors that made counselling difficult. Second, it was revealed that most elementary school students have had experiences of anguish and most have had some form of counselling. They mostly sought counselling from their parents and friends, and the reasons behind such choices were that they were very understanding. Third, most students responded that they have had no experience of receiving counselling from their homeroom teachers. Among those with counselling experience with their homeroom teachers, most said that the counselling was helpful. The most significant reason for not receiving counselling from their homeroom teachers was that the students had no worries to talk about with their teachers. Fourth, as a result of categorizing the role of elementary school homeroom teachers as counsellors according to the areas of counselling, role perception for each area turned out to be generally high, while performance was substantially lacking. Fifth, in terms of the causes for the lackluster counselling performance, overwhelming teaching hours and excessive work were indicated for counselling areas of academic and personality issues. Sixth, the analysis of students' expectations for elementary school homeroom teachers as counsellors for counselling areas according to gender and grade revealed that there was no overall statistical significance. Seventh, from the general perspective, the level of role perception of the homeroom teachers were higher than the level of students' expectations. In conclusion, in order to enhance the teacher's role as a counsellor, there has to be a concrete perception of roles as a primary premise, calling for training sessions and programs dedicated to counseling for the teachers to take part in. Moreover, in order to alleviate the most significant causes for undermining teachers' counselling activities - overwhelming teaching hours and excessive work - there must be administrative consideration as well as

Growing Up in Antebellum Philadelphia: Black Childhood in Frank J. Webb’s The Garies and Their Friends

        서주희 한국근대영미소설학회 2023 근대 영미소설 Vol.30 No.2

Frank J. Webb’s 1857 novel, The Garies and Their Friends, has recently undergone revaluation thanks to scholarship in the past couple of decades on antebellum African American literature that has concentrated on uncovering overlooked works written by African American writers. This paper examines the significance of The Garies and Their Friends by first looking into its historical context, and second, by focusing on the child characters of the novel, Charlie Ellis and Clarence Garie. The temporal structure of ‘growing up’ helps Webb to situate the novel in the 1840s—an era that has competing and diverse conditions of people of color in the free North. Historically, it witnessed heightened racial tension between the immigrant Irish and free people of color, often resulting in actual urban unrest. The anti-Black riot that occurs in the novel shapes the contrasted outcomes of the respective childhoods of Charlie and Clarence. While both boys experience racial discrimination, exposing the racial hierarchy that structures Northern society, Clarence’s internalized sense of shame is further exacerbated when he chooses to pass as white, whereas Charlie matures into a working citizen whose racial pride is nurtured in a community built on racial solidarity. The narrative strategy of this juxtaposition presents a portrait of childhood that is placed in a racial economy, rewrites the notion of childhood as a state of innocence, and imagines the possibility of Black citizenship.

Predictors of Refractory Ascites Development in Patients with Hepatitis B Virus-Related Cirrhosis Hospitalized to Control Ascitic Decompensation

        서주희,김승업,박준용,김도영,한광협,전재윤,안상훈 연세대학교의과대학 2013 Yonsei medical journal Vol.54 No.1

Purpose: Refractory ascites (RA) is closely related to a high morbidity and mortality. In this study, we investigated predictors of RA development in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis who were hospitalized to control ascitic decompensation, and determined predictors for survival in patients who experienced RA. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 199 consecutive patients with HBV-related cirrhosis who were hospitalized to control ascitic decompensation between January 1996 and December 2008. Results: Multivariate analyses showed that only serum potassium at admission predicted RA development independently [p=0.013; hazard ratio (HR), 2.800; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.166-6.722]. During the follow-up period, 16 (8.0%) patients experienced RA within 4.2 (range, 1.0-39.2) months after admission for controlling ascitic decompensation, and they survived a median of 8.7 (range, 3.9-51.3) months. Child-Pugh class and RA type were identified as independent prognostic factors affecting the survival in patients with RA (p=0.045; HR, 8.079; 95% CI, 1.231-67.984 and p=0.013; HR, 14.510; 95% CI, 1.771-118.874, respectively). Conclusion: Serum potassium was an independent predictor of RA development in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis who were hospitalized to control ascitic decompensation. After RA development, Child-Pugh class and RA type were independent predictors for survival.

Autobiographical Temporality and the (Un)Making of Blackness in The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

        서주희 한국영어영문학회 2022 영어 영문학 Vol.68 No.2

This paper explores the “failure” of the protagonist in James Weldon Johnson’s 1912 novel, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. The novel is told in a fictional autobiographical form in which the protagonist, the Ex-Colored Man, narrates his story of how he had abandoned his aspirations to become a Black musician and is now living as an “Ex-Colored” white man. This paper argues that the Ex-Colored Man’s failure is embedded in a crisis that arises from the paradox of African American citizenship. The instability of the form of autobiography, due to its fissured temporality between the written subject and the writer, is used in order to address the failure of the American democratic progress and the Ex-Colored Man’s personal failure as a musician. First, I contextualize this crisis in the historical failure of post-Reconstruction citizenship aggravated by lynching and anti-miscegenation laws. The temporality of the autobiographical form embodies this failure and further questions the notion of democratic progress. Then, I read the scenes of shame and lynching in the novel through José Esteban Muñoz’s theory of “disidentification” to look into the specularization of the Black male body and how it functions in the violent technology of making race. The reflexive temporality of the autobiographical form reflects and complicates the processes of race-making through the spectacle of the Black male body. While this study attempts to historicize the notions of Blackness presented in the novel, it also considers the political and aesthetic significance of the form of fictional autobiography.

번역이라는 이상적 장소: 한흑구의 미국흑인 번역시를 중심으로

서주희 한국동서비교문학학회 2023 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.- No.66

This study examines Han Heuk-gu’s translations of The New Negro and Harlem Renaissance poets, and explores how his role as a translator aligns with his broader literary and aesthetic politics. During the Japanese colonization, Han Heuk-gu was exposed to African American literature when he was a student in America in the late 1920s, early 1930s. Building upon the growing critical interest on Han’s literary endeavors during his stay in America, I analyze his translations of African American literature through Walter Benjamin’s “The Task of a Translator,” especially paying attention to Benjamin’s notion of intertextual constellations that was later interpreted as “cultural translation” by postcolonial critics such as Homi Bhabha. Benjamin argues that the “task” of the translator is to find the translatable intention in the original text and expand its meaning through the act of translation. Bhabha’s interpretation of Benjamin sheds light on how the act of translation mediates cross-cultural encounters. I argue that Han’s translations, which entail literary critique, mistranslations, and creative reconfigurations, create an ideal space for multiple registers of cross-cultural exchange and empathy between African American poets and Han Heuk-gu, both representing the dispossessed and the disenfranchised. First, I examine Han’s translations of excerpts from Alain Locke’s The New Negro to illuminate how both Locke and Han found political significance in self-expression as self-determination. Then, I delve into Han’s translations of a few poems by Langston Hughes and Claude McKay to elucidate how the translations serve as a medium through which Han expresses loss, defiance, and solidarity. In the poems written by fellow young poets, Han finds youth that symbolizes hope and endurance, and his translations reveal a steadfast faith in the power of literature which is shared by the contemporary African American writers of the Harlem Renaissance.

마키베리(Aristotelia chilensis)의 안토시아닌 색소를 이용한 모발 염색 특성

        서주희,박철호 대한미용학회 2019 대한미용학회지 Vol.15 No.3

The purpose of this study is to examine the potential utility of anthocyanin pigments from maquiberry for natural hair dyeing under different experimental conditions. The levels of hair dyed and maquiberry color change were measured at the maximum absorption wavelength of anthocyanin following exposure to varying dyeing temperature, dyeing time, and pH. Several mordants were used, and the mordanting effect and colorfastness were investigated in accordance with the mordanting method and mordant concentration. As the dyeing temperature and dyeing time increased, the K/S increased and L* decreased; the K/S were in the 37.139-63.584 range. Anthocyanin pigments had the highest K/S value (63.334) and a* value (2.480) at pH 4. Anthocyanin pigments are especially sensitive to pH, and K/S decreased with increasing pH. Based on the K/S value only, pre-mordanting with FeSO4, MgSO4, MnSO4, AlK(SO4)2, CH3COOH, Co(NO3)2, CaCO3, Na2CO3 was effective; only CuSO4 was effective for post-mordanting. The changes of K/S values at mordant concentrations were 63.701 for 1% FeSO4 and 66.537 for 10% and 20% CuSO4. AlK(SO4)2 and Co(NO3)2 showed high K/S changes of 67.541 and 66.537 at 20%, respectively. The color fastness to washing decreased with repeated shampooing. The K/S was in the 60.144-38.646 range after washing. The results presented herein suggest that maquiberry may be useful to be used as a hair dye.
