Vol.131 No.-

This study, acknowledging the contemporary demand for a comprehensive restructuring of theological education in South Korea, argues that a feminist theological perspective, its content, and methodology can contribute to a new imagination for this restructuring. To support this proposal, an analysis of the curricula for theology/Christian studies majors in 14 seminaries/universities has been conducted from a feminist perspective. Through this process, it is observed that most educational institutions lack explicit courses on feminist theology. While some courses have universal titles, they are developed essentially within the modern framework of Western, male-dominated academic systems. Given the complexity of theological identity within the existing curricula, meaningful restructuring appears challenging. The study emphasizes that the inclusion of feminist theology, which has previously been excluded from the curriculum, can move beyond the universalization of a particular theology and become genuine universal theology. The study also critiques the limitations of the modern educational system, which is compartmentalized at the department and individual school levels in a vertical competitive structure. In response, it proposes “network theological education” that aligns with feminist initiatives and addresses contemporary needs. This proposal is considered fundamental and practical, as it aims to preserve the essential task of theological education in nurturing the ‘religious human,’ amid the transformation into job training institutions due to survival competition.

Vol.55 No.-

Exploring the possibility of ‘Christian feminism’ as a ‘church discourse,’ this study first analyzes the reasons why ‘Christian feminism’ failed to acquire knowledge power in Korean churches. The researcher notes the monopoly of church knowledge power by the ‘crisis ideology’ production group and the patriarchal structure of the Protestant faith overlooked by most early Protestant women as the main reasons. However, this study witnesses the current historical and theological reconstruction of the ‘Sophia tradition’ and the social changes in late-modern society that are gradually reducing gender restrictions as grounds for ‘Christian feminism’ to be established as a church discourse. With these ob- servations, this study prospects that ‘Christian feminism’ can contribute to the establishment of gender equality in the church and provide community-oriented vi- sion for a self-centered modern society.

21 Vol.13 No.6

Facing today’s reality of advanced technology uniting with capitalist capability of replacing female reproductive organ, this study aims to re-conceptualize the female reproductive organ from a ‘passive container’ as viewed by patriarchal perspectives to a reality for creative relationship and a metaphor for social interaction. This research focused on the main concepts of feminists and of feminist theologians, and used the concepts as resources to re-conceptualize ‘womb’ reflectively and synthetically. This research proposed the term ‘po-gung’ instead of womb as an inclusive and synthetic term for the female organs related with reproduction, and critically examine main concepts of chora, kenosis, tzimtzum, perichoresis, and tehom, in order to explain women’s subjective decision-making to create life-place, and also to explain female organ’s relational mutuality which is not overpowering or controlling other living beings. As a conclusion, this study suggests that ‘po-gung’ is a human domain which is irreplaceable with capital-oriented technology, and a ‘life-place’ where mutual growth of different entities takes place. Furthermore, I request Christians, my inner circle members, to create a social life-place functioning as po-gung, applying the metaphor based on such reality.

Vol.2 No.1

This is a study on the subjective meaning of contemporary Korean Protestants in metro-Seoul area, who had been once enrolled in other churches but who are currently moving into the 90s-type churches. This article uses the term '90s-type churches' to describe churches that have achieved a great deal of numerical growth in membership since the 1990s, a time when a decrease was observed in mainline Protestant churches in Korea. Located in the centers of emerging urban cities, which have rapid 'moving-in' population growth rates, this type of churches have gained great attention and participation from Korean urban Christians. Witnessing this phenomenon, this study performs a qualitative research, following a social phenomenological approach, to analyze the correlation between the subjective meaning of the churchgoers and the socio-cultural environments of the metro-Seoul area since the 1990s. The clusters of meanings, gathered from long-time interviews with thirty-two Christians of thirteen 90s-type churches, show that: 'moving-in' churchgoers are satisfied with the 90s-type churches for 1) the professionality-oriented, democratic ministry, 2) the autonomous and voluntary participations in church activities, 3) the education encouraging laity leadership, 4) the various small communities functioning as support group, 5) the testimony of Christian faith that guarantees worldly success and wealth, 6) the openness to contemporary cultural expression methods and facilities, 7) the readiness to communicate with global trend of Christian movements, and 8) the ambitious zeal, as Christians, for renewal of the social order. This study reveals that such characteristics of the 90s-type churches that satisfy the 'moving-in' churchgoers reflect the socio-cultural environments of the metro-Seoul area, the highly developed neo-liberal capitalist hyper-city. With sensuous worship programs, small support group activities, capitalist-friendly teachings, and fundamentalist zeal for social change, the 90s-type churches meet the subjective requests of late-modern minds, who are surrounded by convenient cultural facilities, media transformation that reinforces global communication, increasing gesellschaft-type of social life, and people of different values and beliefs. Along with critiques of several problematic matters such as the exclusive gathering of middle and upper-middle class and the reversed Protestant work ethic, this study, further, requests from this type of churches to develop local(Korean) contents and forms that could contribute to globalization, not as a homogeneous movement but as a movement open to local participation in making a global world.

Vol.43 No.-

With an intensive concern on the ‘young-feminists’ who have rapidly grown as a protesting group against the existing patriarchal culture, this article analyzes their rising as a social phenomenon emerged in the late modern neoliberal Korean contexts. The young-feminists are women, for the first time in the history of modern Korea, who have strong self consciousness at massive scale, while they belong to the generation which has experienced harsh and competitive economic environments of the 21st century neoliberal Korea. Witnessing the ‘elective hybridity’ in the ‘mirroring strategy’ of the young-feminists, the combination of the feminist actions and the selective acceptance of profitable resources from the present patriarchal institutions and cultural presuppositions, however, this article worries about the possibility of reinforcing current neoliberal orders as the results of ‘elective hybridity’strategy. As an alternative feminist strategy for imaging and practicing a new group interaction, which would result in the advent of a gender- equal society, as a concluding remark, this article examines the concept of “the porosity of being,” the ontological ground of communicating with each other while retaining the boundary of an individual/an identity group.

Vol.29 No.2

Green roofs are gaining much interest in many cities around the world due to its multi-purpose effects of water conservation, flood mitigation and aesthetic benefits. However it may cause additional water demand to maintain green plants, which may intensify the current and future water shortage problems. While ordinary concrete roofs and normal green roof drains off rain water, concave green roof system can retain rain water because of its water holding capability. In this study, the water conservation effect of concave green roof was compared to normal roof on #35 building in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. For seven rainfall events the amount of stored rainwater and runoff were measured and proved water conservation effect of the concave green roof system. The concave green roof system of which area is 140m2 showed effect of water conservation from 1.8ton to 7.2ton and the most influence factors on water conservation in green roof are rainfall and antecedent day. If this concave green roof is applied to many buildings in the cities, it is expected as a way to water conservation through rainfall storage.
