Vol.21 No.6

The current study examined the cyber learners' perceptions of the educational usefulness of Grammarly, an online grammar checker, after it was used to provide feedback to cyber university students in a situation where the instructor could not provide sufficient feedback on their written work in English. The survey results, revealed that the majority of learners had positive attitudes to the usefulness of Grammarly. In particular, the feedback immediately available whenever needed was regarded as helpful in improving English sentences, and most learners were highly satisfied with the amount of the feedback provided by Grammarly. It was also found that Grammarly had positive effects in terms of the affective domains, helping learners to improve their interest and confidence in English writing. In particular, Grammarly was found to be effective in reducing writing anxiety in English, one of the main factors negatively affecting writing performance in English. However, along with these positive results, limitations such as inaccurate feedback and inadequate explanation of errors were also found. Therefore, when Grammarly is used for English education, it is necessary to conduct multifaceted research to develop effective teaching methods that can minimize the problems that may arise from these limitations.

Vol.16 No.5

This study explores the effects of an video-recording English speaking task model on learners. The learning model, a form of mobile learning, was developed to facilitate the learners' output practice applying advantages of a smartphone and Text-to Speech. The survey results shows the positive effects of the speaking task on the domain of pronunciation, speaking, listening, writing in terms of students' confidence, as well as general English ability. The study further examines the possibilities and limitations of the speaking task in assisting Korean learners improve their speaking ability, who do not have sufficient exposure to English input or output practice due to the situational limitations where English is learned as a foreign language.

Vol.11 No.6

In this paper, a multi-media-based online education content was designed and developed to effectively educate automobile electrical engineering. For an efficient education of automobile electrical engineering, experiments and theory-based lectures are essential. However, providing practicum is not easy through cyber education. In order to overcome the practicum barrier, an online practicum course was designed using ELECTUDE simulator for students to practice without having the actual car components. These classes were recorded as a video using Camtasia for beginners to easily follow the progress. The followings are the considerations we made during the development and construction of the education contents. We created the hypothetical practice using simulations related to auto mobile in order to allow a realistic experience. This content has beginner, intermediate and advanced levels to motivate students to finish the online learning. All of the practicums were recorded using Camtasia for a student who has no prior electrical automobile engineering experience. These videos help the student to quickly adapt to the actual working environment and identically follow the procedures. We also provide the contents in English and these contents are recorded by a native speaker to provide a natural way to learn the specific jargons. A separate translated page in Korean is also provided for students who are not proficient in English. These bi-lingual education attempts naturally motivates students who avoids learning English in engineering departments to learn the language. We could avoid text-oriented English classes and using the native-speaker’s pronunciation, we could also anticipate English listening comprehension. The automobile-electrical engineering online course suggested in this paper allows both the theoretical learning and the experiments using the simulators, and these experiments resemble real life applications. Would-be students of automobile electrical engineering can greatly benefit from this online content.

      • S-406 Thyrotoxic Vomiting in Patient with Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Vol.2016 No.1

Thyrotoxic vomiting is uncommon, whereas gastrointesitinal (GI) symptoms such as loose stool, diarrhea, and hyperphagia are commonly associated with thyrotoxicosis. When rare GI symptoms like vomiting present in patients with thyrotoxicosis, it can be misdiagnosed as GI disorders. Thyrotoxicosis is a rare, but remarkable cause for unexplained and repeated vomiting. We report a rare case of thyrotoxic vomiting in a 22-year-old female with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). It may be difficult to detect thyrotoxic vomiting early, especially when it is developed with DKA. Because many patients of DKA present nausea and vomiting, coincidental other cause can be neglected or misdiagnosed. A patient was reffered to emergency room for repeated nausea and vomiting and was diagnosed DKA initially. However, severe vomiting was continued after improvement of DKA. She was subsequently diagnosed as Graves' disease as thyroid stimulating hormone <0.01 μIU/mL, elevated thyroid hormones, and positive thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody. The vomiting improved remarkably after treatment with antithyroid drugs, beta blocker, and dexamethasone. Clinicians should consider the possibility of thyrotoxicosis in patient with unexplained and repeated vomiting.

Students` Development as Writers and Reviewers through Trained Peer Review in a Writing Course

21 Vol.23 No.3

This qualitative case study explored how participating in trained peer review affected seven Korean students` development both as writers and reviewers in a general academic writing class. The data were gathered through students reflective journals and an interview with each student. The findings indicate the overall positive influences of trained peer review on students` development both as reviewers and writers. As reviewers, the students gained confidence in giving feedback and raised an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of their writing. As writers, the students fostered an ownership of the text and gained a new insight about their writing process and audience. On the other hand, the students` initial struggle with giving peer feedback suggests that the effects of peer review training was not immediate but gradual, but the students gained long-term advantages related exchanging feedback, reflecting on it, and revising. It is concluded that trained peer review has potential to help the students to become self-reliant writers.

2016 The Medical Journal of Chosun University Vol.41 No.1

Invasive fungal infection can be a lethal complication in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Crytococcus neoformans, as one of the most common pathogenic species worldwide, can cause infection disease in human. The central nervous system (CNS) is a common site for cryptococcal infection which usually presents cryptococcal meningitis. The cryptococcal meningitis is a recognized complication of SLE, with high mortality rates, particularly in those treated with immunosuppressive agents. However, it is difficult to differentiate infectious meningitis and neuropsychiatric lupus because of the clinical manifestations are unspecific and frequently are confused with lupus activity. So a early diagnosis and treatment is very important for its significant mortality and morbidity. We report the case of fatal meningoencephalitis by Cryptococcus neoforman in a 44 years old patient with SLE
