Changes in the Activities of Antioxidant Enzymes during Chilling Stress in Chilling-Tolerant and Chilling-Sensitive Cultivars of Cucurbita spp.

To determine whether antioxidant enzyme systems are related to chilling tolerance, changes ofcultivar (Cucurbita ficifolia, cv. Heukjong) and a chilling-sensitive cultivar (Cucurbita moschata, cv. Jaerae13). Leaves of chilling-tolerant plant have two major isoforms, Fe-SOD and Mn-SOD, at the Rm values of0.20 and 0.52, respectively. In leaves of chilling-sensitive plant, two major isozymes of SOD was observed,one isoform is Mn-SOD at the Rm value of 0.20, and the other isoform is Cu/Zn-SOD at the Rm value of0.58. When plants were treated with chilling stress, Cu/Zn-SOD at the Rm value of 0.58 was newlyexpressed at 10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant plants, and density of this band increased atfive days after chilling stress in the chilling-sensitive plants. One APX isozyme band was observed inunstressed plants of both cultivars. Under the chilling stress one APX isozyme band was newly expressed at10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant cultivar. Significant genotype differences were observedfor POD isozyme banding patterns such as four main isozyme bands in chilling-tolerant plants, and oneband in chilling-sensitive plants. Densities of three POD isozyme bands at the Rm of 0.36, 0.40 and 0.54increased at 10 days after chilling stress in the chilling-tolerant plants, while two bands at the Rm of 0.36Activities of SOD, APX and POD significantly increased during five days after chilling stres in both culti-vars. In the chilling-tolerant cultivar, activities of these enzymes were higher in chilling-stressed plant thanin unstressed plants. However, activities of these enzymes in the chilling-sensitive cultivar decreased rapidlyafter five days of chilling stress, and were lower in chilling stressed plants than in unstressed plants.

This paper examines whether 'Open-ended Mapped Role-plays' (abbreviated as OMRs hereafter) can reduce the learners' test anxiety and activate their performances in the test. For this question to be answered the following two questions are asked. Firstly, it asks about the learners' perceptions of using OMR compare to interview types (abbreviated as IT hereafter). Secondly, it also examines whether their decreased test anxiety and positive perceptions toward the assessments would encourage them to perform their best. In order to answer these questions, the IT and the OMR were conducted in two English classes of two schools. Two post surveys were carried out after taking the two assessments. From this research it was found out that this type of OMRs can be effective in reducing test anxiety of the testees and in increasing learners' best performances on the test. (Sookmyung University)

An accurate television viewing choice models is an important tool for television executives and advertisers. This paper present a new viewing choice model, which differs from the traditional rating analysis in three ways: (1) it uses a utility-based viewing model. Channel choice probability is defined as a function sequential comparisons of personal utility beteen the competitive channels; (2) it allows the violation of I.I.A. (Indenpendence of Irrelevant Alternatives) assumption by using the dynamic Probit analysis method instead of the usual Logit method. I.I.A assumtion is unrealistic in modelling the channel choice behavior; (3) it examines the possibility of reshuffling the program schedule to maximize the total ratings for one channel. Using Nielsen people Meter data, this study analyzes the effects of structural and personal preference components on predicting TV ratings. The results show that the structural component (eg. audience flows measured by [t-1] 15 minute block) is no longer the most powerful predictor to explain the viewing choice. Instead, program preference variables are found to be more effective. The Probit discrete choice model can be used by TV programmers to understand the viewing audiences better, and thus to help design program and program schedules that are more attractive to viewers.

Anti-TV violence movement initiated by media watch-dog groups is regraded as the most active civil movement in Korea. Like the anti-violence campaign in 1970s and 1980s in America, the movement was organized by a few woman activists and supporting volunteers. Since they did not have enough resources to run the full-fledged campaigns, their activities were mainly confined to monitoring television program's content. They partially succeeded in reducing the amounts of broadcasting violent TV program. But, like a cat-and-mouse game, broadcasters repeatedly re-introduce the violent programs whenever media activists loosened their grips. Thus, it is a time to discuss about what would be the next steps and directions to take in the movement. Based on the analysis of media activity groups' role in enacting Children's Television Act and Television Violence Act commissioned by Congress in early 1990s, three steps were recommended. First, the coalition with other concerned professional organization is required. Such organizations would be the nationwide parents' organizations, pediatric association, psychiatric association and other academic association interested in the effects of media violence on human behavior. Second, it is necessary to conduct efficient campaign to make anti-TV violence legislation. It is worth to know that the results of thousands of academic studies that continuously pointed the finger to TV violence as the prime culprit of juvenile violence did not play a major role in passing the Television Violence Act of 1990. Rather, the tenacious anti-violence campaign heralded by Peggy Charen's Action for Children's Television was the prime force behind the scene. Third, the media activity group must understand the role of mass media in triad relationships among audience, broadcasters and regulatory body.

Creativity Enhancing Activities in English Lessons for 6th Grade Primary School Students and Their Perceptions

This study introduces four types of creativity enhancing activities(CEAs) that can be implemented as part of English lessons for 6th grade primary school students and investigates the students’ perceptions toward them. A total of 122 6th grade primary school students participated in this study, with 61 of them being enrolled in the control and experimental groups respectively. For this study, one unit of an English textbook was used. While the control group mainly used textbook activities for each lesson, the experimental group used six different CEAs in place of six textbook activities across six English lessons over a two–week period. The study employs both qualitative and quantitative data analysis for more robust data analysis and triangulation of the data. After the experiment, each participant in both the control and experimental groups completed a post survey and several students were chosen to take part in an interview. The survey results for both groups showed a positive response to the English lessons with the experimental group showing greater positivity. There were discrepancies between the two groups with regard to the activities they liked and disliked. Whereas the control group students preferred the game-like activities, many of the experimental group students preferred some CEAs to other textbook activities due to the opportunities they provided to use their thinking skills. This research showed a positive effect of CEAs on Korean primary school learners’ English learning and it also revealed possibilities of implanting CEAs in regular English lessons for Korean primary schools.
