On the Relation between Phonetics and Phonology

Vol.29 No.1

Chang Woohyeok. 2012, On the Relation between Phonetics and Phonology, Linguistic Research 29(1), 127-156. This study examines the nature of the relationship between phonology and phonetics and advocates a modular view in which there is a principled mapping between phonological representations and phonetic expressions. In particular, this modular view is advocated by Laboratory Phonology that can be characterized by two beliefs. First, it is believed that there should be a division between phonetics and phonology. Second, there should be a considerable interconnection between them. Contrary to this modular view, other approaches are somewhat radical in that abstract phonological features are not associated with phonetic facts and that phonetics and phonology are integrated into a single module which is all phonetic. In favor of the modular theory, I propose a principle about phonology-phonetics interface: unmarked items display a wider range of phonetic realization but cannot be realized in a more marked way than their marked counterparts, One representative evidence would be that the higher pitch value of a tone compared with other tones has to be a phonological high tone rather than a low tone. Further discussions about phonology-phonetics interface are done with regard to speech perception and production. It is shown that perception and production data are valid when they are used as phonetic evidence to resolve phonological controversies. On the other hand, the P-map hypothesis seems invalid when dealing with some cases where speech production and perception do not match.

      • An experimental analysis of vowel adaptation in Chinese loanword phonology

Vol.- No.-

In this paper, laboratory phonological methods are used to analyze the phonetic adaptation of Korean vowel into Chinese. The adaptation strategies, the typology of variable adaptation and the related constraints are investigated and compared with existing loanwords. This paper argues that [+back] and [+low] quality play the most important role in adaptation strategies based on the maximum entropy modeling. It was the result of the interaction between the linguistic universality of loanword phonology and the linguistic individuality of Chinese phonology.

Vol.1 No.33

The aim of this paper is to show how the problems we have to solve in the future examining the trends in phonetic study in Korea. The features of phonetic study in Korea are summarized as follows; (1) Most of the studies are deductive hypothesis‐testing typed laboratory phonological studies. (2) When prosodic features in Seoul Korean are examined, accent has not been focused on but intonation that relates to prosodic structure has been emphasized. (3) The main stream of phonetics study are acoustic phonetics and articulatory phonetics research, so auditory phonetics study related with cognition is rare. We need an examination based on a traditional experimental phonetics done by Rousselot (1897-1908),focusing on accent that has not been considered well from phonological point of view. By this examination, we can suggest a new proposal for Korean accent which is not solved sufficiently.

Vol.90 No.-
